To treat myself to a new dressing gown or not?

I bought my dressing gown around 20 years ago.
It's a plain black fleece one which reaches my ankles and is two sizes too big for me, so I can wrap it nicely and tie it.
Now, I only wear it when I get up on a morning when I stagger out of bed and drink a coffee before getting showered and dressed.
However, it's now showing its age and in my heart I know it should be replaced, but somehow I keep clinging onto it.
I don't want an oodie thing as I had one before and ended up giving it to my daughter as I couldn't do with melting when I wore it, or the hassle of having to get it off over my head.
So, should I go mad and treat myself to a new fleecy friend or just keep wearing my old friend until it falls off my back?
I could make my dogs a new coat each out of my old one, so it wouldn't be wasted.

Definitely definitely get yourself a new one!

Thrownunderabus · 17/10/2022 19:23

A new one wouldn’t be as good as your old one, I speak from experience.

daisychain01 · 17/10/2022 19:26

This is an order, you must get a new dressing gown! The cosier the better.

if only to be able to wear the MN "dressing gown of doom" when you're feeling a bit under the weather Grin

photo would be appreciated.

Mentalpiece · 17/10/2022 19:47

@daisychain01 I never thought about it from that angle.
I'm swaying here towards a new one.
I hope my old one doesn't feel betrayed.

My dressing gown is the same, 20 years old, too big so it wraps round me twice and even when I wash it the stains don't come out. I bought a new one, it's just not the same I don't like it, I've gone back to my manky old dressing gown. DS2 says his favourite memories of us are around being cuddled up in bed with me in that old dressing gown, he was very upset when he thought I'd thrown it out.

SophieJo · 17/10/2022 19:52

I bought one of these, in a different pattern, but you can get an idea of the style. So so cosy! I wanted something long to cuddle up into.

To treat myself to a new dressing gown or not?
Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 17/10/2022 19:56

Hummm it really depends on how it smells Grin

Nooooo of course you need to buy a new one but you may be so horrified at the cost you will keep your old one.

Sometimes tkmaxx has some nice cheapish sleepwear but marks and Spencer's dressing gowns are like £50 !!

Mentalpiece · 17/10/2022 19:58

@brittanyfairies it's like dumping a reliable friend isn't it.
I mean, it's just a piece of material, but it's been there through thick and thin.
@SophieJo that's a similar style to the oodie thing I gave up to my daughter, I had to pull it off over my head rather than wrap it round me twice and tie it.
They are lovely though.

I'm the same. Hence username. Looking for a new dressing gown atm. Dh bought my last one from Costco. Black, long, so comfy. I barely take it off.

Mentalpiece · 17/10/2022 20:00

@Bigpaintinglittlepainting At the moment it absolutely honks so it's going round the washing machine on a sixty.
How much for a Marks? Blooming heck, I was expecting to pay around twenty. 😲

I got one that appeared to be unworn for a fiver in a charity shop. It's lovely. I have kept my old one as a spare - I always keep the one before as a spare for when the current one is being washed.

Mentalpiece · 17/10/2022 20:02

@Oblomov22 If you find ' the one ' can you let me know how you rate it for
Warmth.
Comfort.
Ability to hook itself to door handles.
Thanks 😊

It's 20 years old - in which case it's ok to buy another one as it has been loved an used.

Mentalpiece · 17/10/2022 20:04

@AnApparitionQuipped Good idea, maybe my old one won't feel unloved if I do that.

Hideously expensive, but these are heaven!

20 years?! That’s impressive. (Hoping mine lasts that long)!!

CaveMum · 17/10/2022 20:07

Forgot to add to my post, I have one of these that I picked up on EBay as an unwanted Christmas gift for £40! www.thewhitecompany.com/uk/Unisex-Double-Faced-Waffle-Robe/p/WDCNR?swatch=White

I find men's ones are far better quality than womens.

I replaced my old faithful dressing gown after 26 years last year. Worst. Decision. Ever.

Yes, just put it in the wardrobe or the airing cupboard if you have one, as your trusty standby 😀

FistFullOfRegrets · 17/10/2022 20:12

@Mentalpiece

why? Why do you feel you need to replace old faithful? Is it not warm enough anymore

I don't think old faithfuls can be replaced, they get better with age until they literally fall apart.

Mentalpiece · 17/10/2022 20:12

@CaveMum Blooming heck, that's a bit more than I expected to pay, they're very nice though, but still...

I have a lovely fleecy blue dressing gown, full length and with a hood. It's wrap around which I think is better than over head. I pop it on over my clothes if I'm cold. It was a Christmas present year before last - I think it probably came from Amazon .

Mamette · 17/10/2022 20:13

I only wear it when I get up on a morning when I stagger out of bed and drink a coffee before getting showered and dressed.

So it’s something you wear every day! Yes get a new, decent one.

Just be careful of the sleeves. Nothing worse than a dressing gown with “wrong” sleeves imo. Too short, too long, too wide, pointless turn-ups… all these things must be avoided!

inheritanceshiteagain · 17/10/2022 20:15

I have an equally old and crappy looking one, but it is so warm and comfy. I've looked around and they are either very expensive or short or not as thick, so my cunning plan (when I find the time) is to dismantle my old one and use the pieces to make a new on with a similar thick fleecy fabric.
