To treat myself to a new dressing gown or not?

Mentalpiece · 17/10/2022 19:21

I bought my dressing gown around 20 years ago.
It's a plain black fleece one which reaches my ankles and is two sizes too big for me, so I can wrap it nicely and tie it.
Now, I only wear it when I get up on a morning when I stagger out of bed and drink a coffee before getting showered and dressed.
However, it's now showing its age and in my heart I know it should be replaced, but somehow I keep clinging onto it.
I don't want an oodie thing as I had one before and ended up giving it to my daughter as I couldn't do with melting when I wore it, or the hassle of having to get it off over my head.
So, should I go mad and treat myself to a new fleecy friend or just keep wearing my old friend until it falls off my back?
I could make my dogs a new coat each out of my old one, so it wouldn't be wasted.

@FistFullOfRegrets I agree, hence my agonising dilemma.
It's still warm enough, but although I'd still answer the door to the postie in it, it's terribly tatty now.

@Oblomov22 If you find ' the one ' can you let me know how you rate it for
Warmth.
Comfort.
Ability to hook itself to door handles.
Thanks 😊

Hook on mine broke but sewed a ribbon on as a loop. Micro fibre fluffy thing for me. Towelling is too stiff

I can’t be doing with overhead ones either. Personally I’ve found the M&S zip up one to be an absolute game changer in the cosiness stakes. I bought one when I had builders in and wanted to avoid accidental flapping open incidents, but ds promptly stole that one so I had to replace it. Now dd has her eye on my replacement one, so I think I might have to just buy her one of her own for Christmas, so we can all look like ridiculous baby penguins.

@VenusClapTrap oh I like that, does it come to the ankle?

Got loads of Oodie type hoodies (they are really cosy OP) .. BUT nothing .. and I mean NOTHING will ever ever come to close to my old favourite. It belonged to my Granny (and by the look of it to her Granny too)
Its amazingly old fashioned with twee embroidered flowers on the ‘yoke’ but pockets that can take a can of pledge, a duster and half a load of laundry.

Its got all odd buttons sewn back on but it holds so many memories (and stains) that nothing else will ever live up to it.

Almost, but then I am vertically challenged.

My (now sadly departed) mum made my dressing gown for me when DS was a baby 22 years ago and I was doing night feeds. She loaned me hers one night (she’d made that one too!) and it was so lovely that I put in a request. It’s full length fleece and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to retire it. I’ve also got her dressing gown as a back up, just in case! She had a sewing business later in life so all her garments had a label in the back saying ‘Made for you by petalpower’s mum’ and both these dressing gowns have the label.

CamdenLurker · 17/10/2022 20:29

Buy a new one and make your dogs some nice new coats out the old favourite one!

I had a dressing gown that my Granny gave me years ago, it's a size 20 (I'm a size 12) when I was going to replace it dd2 claimed it and often wears it- she's a size 8 and lives that she can wrap it around her ☺️

LentilDiet · 17/10/2022 20:32

Tk maxx often have dressing gowns. Or wait till the January sales.

However, you will have bonded with your trusty old dressing gown, formed an attachment to it, like a comfort blanket type of thing. So dont be in too much of a rush to cut it up for your dogs. Leave it, just in case the new one isn't quote as perfect as your old one.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 17/10/2022 20:41

I'm here still deferring to my 20 year plus dressing gown too. Although I did buy a replacement from Ugg which is super comfortable. .....it just doesn't have a hood which I tend to prefer for extra snugness. I've had a quick look on the Ugg website but they don't appear to sell it anymore. It's pretty pricey anyway so just as well.

Season0fTheWitch · 17/10/2022 20:47

Sainsbury's are my go to for Dressing gowns. Soft, big enough to wrap round fully, wash amazingly. I have about 10 in different styles and colours. I wear a size 6 normally and go for a size 8 or 10 for maximum cosiness but you don't need to really

seadreams · 17/10/2022 20:55

I just bought a lovely long blue fleecey one from M&S - cost me 30 pounds and it has a hood! www.marksandspencer.com/fleece-hooded-long-dressing-gown/p/clp60553958?prevPage=srp

SnoopyNoseTits · 17/10/2022 20:57

Treat yourself. My mum bought me a new one for Christmas last year, and it’s so lovely and fluffy and soft, not all flat and horrible like my old one!

the old one was turned in to a cushion cover for the cat

Lifehaslifedme · 17/10/2022 20:58

I just bought a cosy black one from House of Fraser for £30.It is lush!!!It is a BIBA brand.
My husband tried it on and would not stop talking about it so guess what his birthday present is 😂😂
It is black too and can be worn unisex.

Mentalpiece · 17/10/2022 20:58

Oh, I'm torn now with all these lovely ones on here.
I love the blue Marks one, very similar to my old faithful.

Haha! I tried this last year - thought I deserved a new one after 10 years so ordered one. I just didn’t feel the love for it though so stuck to the old one. Maybe I’ll try again in another ten years!

I was going to recommend Sainsbo for nightwear Smile I was sorely tempted last week with a beautiful fleecy number, it was so soft like being wrapped in fluffy clouds. And only £25!

@Mentalpiece Dont whatever you do get rid of your <whispers> current one, just get a new one and they can live next to each other in the wardrobe.

I've got:

  1. thick fleecy (lilac/lavender) with belt and raglan sleeves for the winter
  2. thinner fleecy, a bit less fluffy (dusky pink) for Spring/summer, wafting round the house (and doing a bit of gardening...)
  3. Half length bed-jacket, soft fleecy (deep burgundy) lush for reading in bed, no bunching round the bum
  4. White soft towering robe, good for when the postman calls and I'm struggling to leap out the shower.

They all happily coexist and take turns at being used. I couldn't possibly get rid of any of them, I'd feel like a complete traitor. The thought of them ending up in landfill gives me the shakes, I just keep adding to the collection Grin

That is so so lovely! I'm glad you've got things made with love from your Mum. Precious.

Runnerduck34 · 17/10/2022 23:17

I've got an old red towelling one from next that must be 30 years old, it goes round me but is definitely not as roomy as it was!!
I have had newer ones but they've never been as good as my old one , so it's still my dressing gown of choice , although tbf I rarely wear a dressing gown.

@VenusClapTrap my DIL bought this in grey for me last Xmas. A zip is fantastic no more awful tie belts. I was so thrilled I bought an identical one in the sales. I wear it over my clothes if I get chilly during the day. If I take it off the cat settles on it. And here she is now on it 😂😂.

Sensible cat!

MotherOfWhippets · 18/10/2022 09:00

I agree with the poster above - the M&S zip one is amazing. I've just bought one.

I had one of their similar ones last year but the dog stole it and it's now his comfort blanket 🙄

They're lightweight, cosy and you can look like a giant penguin 🐧

MuggleMe · 18/10/2022 09:12

Do it! Just treated myself to new PJ's when I realised apart from breastfeeding friendly ones I bought 8 years ago that I'm still wearing, I haven't bought any in 15 years.

I loove them! They are soft, warm, pretty! £8 well spent.

Scratcheee · 18/10/2022 09:16

I bought an oversized zip hoody, very snuggly and no over the head nonsense. Like this one at £15, it's warm enough but not as crazy hot as oodies

Mentalpiece · 18/10/2022 09:45

Thanks for all your input and ideas.
@petalpower I'm glad that your mum's dressing gown is still giving comfort.
@daisychain01 advice taken. That's quite a collection you have there 😂
@justasking111 cute cat 😍
