Have you ever fainted?

I fainted for the first time in my life yesterday.

Currently have covid and I got into bed with my cup of tea and laptop to watch something.

Next time I know, my legs burning and ive spilt my tea everywhere.

Never fainted before and I had no warning sign before hand. Just literally out and up again.

I was initially confused as to why my leg was burning but cottoned on quick to what what was happened

Never have but as a child and a teen I always wanted to faint as it looked so lovely on TV and the faintee (is that a word?) was usually saved by a handsome stranger and scooped up in his arms

I now of course realise if I fainted I’d probably either break a leg or piss myself!

Yes - quite frequently, but OP - I would call a doctor if you are fainting when you have COVID. It's one of the warning signs to be examined by a doctor. It is most likely just because you got up to quickly after lying down, but please do get a check up if you can (even if it's a phone appointment).

I had no idea it was a warning sign to see a doctor? I've never read that anywhere? I almost fainted when I had covid (

picklemewalnuts · 17/10/2022 20:21

I didn't get a warning.
I felt ill, post vaccine. Sat down, waiting to feel better. Found myself having a little lie down on the floor, waiting to feel better.

It was only later that I realised I'd fainted. I thought I must have decided to lie down till I felt better. Then I found a sore lump on my head and gradually realised I must have actually gone down unintentionally!

CanopusMind · 17/10/2022 20:23

@RichardMarxisinnocent Yes, it's a sign that things may be worsening rapidly.

However, it's most likely the OP just stood up too quickly after a long time lying down but it's always suggested to get it checked out.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 17/10/2022 20:23

Sorry posted to soon. I would have fainted if I wasn't familiar with feeling faint which meant I knew to sit on the floor. I had no idea I had covid as until then I had just been really tired but had had a busy couple of days and not much sleep and assumed so didn't twig I was ill. I assumed the faintness was just a symptom of having covid /being ill.

rubydoobydoo · 17/10/2022 20:24

Amazingly my husband has only seen it happen to me once in the 15 years we've been together even though I faint a lot. He was with me when I was having bloods taken in hospital and he said that I said "I'm about to pass out..." then my eyes rolled up like a fruit machine and everyone suddenly shouted for more doctors!
Next thing I knew there were suddenly more people surrounding me and they had tilted the bed down to try and get the blood flowing back to my head.

YerAWizardHarry · 17/10/2022 20:27

Yes twice-
Once when I had low blood pressure and was 20 odd weeks pregnant.
Once when I had a massive pulmonary embolism and was unable to breathe.

i was very aware I was going to faint prior both times though!

WhoWants2Know · 17/10/2022 20:29

I'm from a quite fainty bunch of people, so it doesn't worry me too much once I've recovered. A couple of weeks ago I popped upstairs to the loo and fainted off the toilet 🤦‍♀️. I had time to feel terrible and panicked and then I could hear my youngest saying "she's laying on the floor" to her dad on the phone.

As I said I in my second post it was before I knew I had covid so was right at the start of me having it. I felt pretty rubbish for the rest of the day and next couple of days but with extreme fatigue, nausea and general feeling ill rather than fainting. I am also prone to feeling faint so in my case I think it was just a symptom of me being ill rather than a sign I was deteriorating (and this was months ago and I was fine within a week so obviously I wasn't deteriorating!). But useful to know that it could be a sign.

Once or twice when ill with a flu type thing, and once getting out of the shower after having completed the London marathon. The flu ones, I didn’t get a warning, just came to on the floor. The post-marathon one, I had the tunnel vision and weird head rush feeling, and was able to get myself out of the shower, and collapsed on the bathroom floor but managed to stop myself fainting completely by deep breathing and downing some lucozade tabs I still had in my leggings pocket. I am prone to both low BP and low blood sugar so it’s likely a combo.

MintyGreenDreams · 17/10/2022 20:33

Yes on the Cambridge diet.Fucking ridiculous I was so hungry.

tiggergoesbounce · 17/10/2022 16:45

Yes i have once and fitted afterwards due to banging my head, it was in public.

I didnt know it was coming as much, but i did go a tad light headed first

Exactly this happened to me 25 years ago. In a supermarket. My head hit the floor. Dehydrated and low BP. Never happened since, thankfully.

dudsville · 17/10/2022 21:07

This thread reminded me how much its changed for me. I used to pass out frequently. I never hurt myself, I would just wake up on the floor. It always felt like the best deepest sleep too. Weird, but somehow refreshing. Back then i could only see it coming only a second or two before hand if at all. Nowadays it's rare but when i feel light headed i always either sit, lie down and or hold on to something and try to breathe through it. I haven't passed out in years but the state i go to instead does make me think it's more blood sugar. I'm still very still and deeply resting but conscious and get a deep sweat.

shinynewapple22 · 17/10/2022 21:08

Not recently .

I fainted regularly as a teenager when I first started my periods .
And a couple of times in my early 20s when I had flu . (This was 30 years ago)

I did feel a bit light headed/dizzy with Covid .

WhatHaveIFound · 17/10/2022 21:16

Once when I was a teen in a very hot country, once when pregnant with low blood pressure.

DS fainted/got dizzy quite often as he's developed PoTS post Covid. We've almost got it under control with plenty of water and salty snacks. His eyes go funny first so he knows it coming.

Silverangels · 17/10/2022 21:16

3 times in 5 minutes
i was a teenager and really needed a pee (it was first thing in the morning)
I got up,ran downstairs got to the bathroom door and fainted
got back up,fainted again by which point I’d wet myself
my mother got me back up and I said I was fine-I just need a shower, put my hand on the door handle and fainted again
we managed to get me to the lounge-still covered in wee and promptly vomited
my mother rang for the doctor-and refused to let me go for a shower until I’d been seen
an hour I had to sit on a towel, covered in vomit and pee until he got to me-turned out I’d got up too fast and my blood pressure had dived, causing me to faint
ive never been so glad to get into a shower in my life-I’ve never fainted since

Pinkflipflop85 · 17/10/2022 21:24

I've fainted quite a fair few times for various reasons.

It's such a bizarre feeling knowing you are about to collapse to the floor and there I'd absolutely nothing you can do about it other than hope you don't really hurt yourself!

Nutted the radiator on the way down once after I'd tried to use the wall to support myself. That was a painful one coming back round!

crackersforcheese · 17/10/2022 21:25

Been very very close lots of times. I recognise the signs now, ringing in ears, hot and clammy & spinning vision. Only passed out once properly while having blood taken!

HailAdrian · 17/10/2022 21:29

Yeah, as a teenager, it was a really hot day and i wouldn't take my jacket off because I self harmed so much, I must have overheated. I felt really lightheaded and 'panicky' just beforehand, the next thing I knew I was on the ground with people trying to talk to me. It took ages for me to register anything. It was a weird experience.

You've just reminded me of the time I had to have lots of blood tests with my preschooler ds in tow.

I fainted from them and woke up to dc eating a handful of biscuits that the nurse had given him. He thought she'd killed me and that was the only thing that calmed him down! 😂

MintJulia · 17/10/2022 21:31

Yes, my sight disappearing into blackness, just having time to say 'I don't feel well' and then nothing. Then waking up on the floor, or in one case in a hospital bed.

dontgobaconmyheart · 17/10/2022 21:36

Yes, though I have a condition (POTS) that tends to cause it. With that said I've had it for years now and hardly ever actually faint these days as I can pre empt it and lie or sit down and take steps to avoid it.

I'd urge anyone who is regularly fainting or feeling as though they might when they are up and about, on the toilet etc to look into it or check their blood pressure and HR sitting and standing to see what the numbers look like and speak to their GP.

Wigeon · 17/10/2022 21:42

Chronic fainter here too, although it got so bad I got referred to a specialist centre.

Here is Hammersmith Hospital’s specialist syncope clinic information on fainting for people who faint, which people on this thread might find useful.

Also the Facebook group “Living with Vasovagal Syncope” (which is only the medical term for “fainting”) is useful in terms of a community of loads of fainters!

Scrambler4 · 17/10/2022 21:45

I wonder if it’s possible you nodded off to sleep rather than fainted. When I had covid a few months ago I couldn’t believe how much I kept drifting off to sleep in the first few days of it. I nodded off a few times without warning and it was the spilling drink that woke me.

LesOliviers · 17/10/2022 21:57

I fainted once at school in 1996. It was during choir rehearsal, i had an awful summer cold and everyone saw my knickers.

I nearly fainted again about 8 years ago. It was a hot day, I hadn't eaten, probably a bit dehydrated as well and I was in town with dh. We were waiting for the bus to get home and I felt really odd. I suddenly realised that I felt faint, so I sat down in the bus shelter with my head between my knees. I think people thought I was drunk and it lasted 45 minutes. I daren't of stood up because I knew I'd faint if I did. It eventually passed and my dh managed to flag down a taxi to get me home.
