Have you ever fainted?

Soubriquet · 17/10/2022 16:21

I fainted for the first time in my life yesterday.

Currently have covid and I got into bed with my cup of tea and laptop to watch something.

Next time I know, my legs burning and ive spilt my tea everywhere.

Never fainted before and I had no warning sign before hand. Just literally out and up again.

I was initially confused as to why my leg was burning but cottoned on quick to what what was happened

I used to faint regularly as a teenager, due to heavy painful periods. Accompanied with vomiting. It happened in church once which was great, I got to skip the boring parts and sit in the car listening to music for the rest of the service. I've fainted a few times as an adult, again due to painful periods. It's not pleasant. I also have migraines with aura which cause me to go blind for about 15/20 minutes at a time. Also not pleasant.

Woolandwonder · 17/10/2022 18:10

Yeah I used to faint a lot. Less so now although still go through phases, predominantly if I've been stood still for a while or having a flare up of chronic illness. I have this weird and very annoying instinct to disappeare if I feel it coming on, I think it comes from embarrassment from having fainted in public a lot but I developed this habit of trying to escape and then fainting on the way or in the toilets and injuring myself which is ridiculous because I just need to lie down!

Arnaquer · 17/10/2022 18:13

Many times. I have low blood pressure.
I can feel it coming on, I get clammy and panicky with a feeling of creeping blackness . All happens too quickly to do much although once or twice I've been able to lie down before I pass out.

Mentalpiece · 17/10/2022 18:20

Yes, a couple of times when I was pregnant.
I got to the top of a staircase at work and fainted when I got to the top, which sent me crashing back down them backwards and head first.
I can tell you that tiled concrete stairs are very unforgiving.
Baby was fine, unlike my skull which was fractured.

MrsDThomas · 17/10/2022 18:21

Twice.

at the age of 13, not eaten and i was practicing in the choir on stage when i fell off and broke my wrist 😂😂

2nd time in labour with DC3. On the bed, having a cannula in and i went. Never happened before and i have no aversion to needles but at that time, something was up!

Fedupwithmondays · 17/10/2022 18:23

Yes, twice. Once after a car accident. Not my fault. I was a passenger. Second time when I was ill at home. I fainted on the stairs. Luckily I didn't hurt myself, just bruising. My DH was panicking and literally carried me back to bed. I haven't fainted since and it was at lease 10 years ago.

Sagittarius25 · 17/10/2022 18:26

Fainted once and almost fainted two more times.

First time I had no idea what was happening and woke up on the kitchen floor where my mum had luckily caught me.

Next time I almost fainted was after spraining my ankle and falling forwards down a steep hill. Walking back to the car I felt sick and faint with the pain from my ankle and shock of the whole thing.

Next time I almost fainted was with a really bad cold (not covid) tried once to get out of bed in the morning and went clammy and dizzy, made it to the toilet on second attempt but almost didn't make it back to bed!

Once you've fainted once you tend to learn your 'warning signs'. Mine are that my vision goes spotty, I feel dizzy and sometimes clammy. Also a note on the two times I almost fainted again, because I knew my warning signs I either laid down or sat with my head between my legs and it stopped it happening.

Sn0tnose · 17/10/2022 18:33

Loads of times. The very first time, my vision went like a fuzzy tv and when it cleared, I was laying on the pavement.

Now I start feeling dizzy and within a couple of seconds, I’m out. But I do have dizzy spells, so I’m never totally sure if I’m about to faint, or just having a dizzy spell. The last time, I was sat on the loo and woke up, very confused, in the bath.

AsACloud · 17/10/2022 18:38

I’m a ‘fainter’ but thankfully have mostly grown out of it as an adult. I got to know the warning signs and would try to lie down to avoid the faint but sometimes it happened too quick. I’ve hit the deck many times, mild concussion once & broken my nose another time. When I was a kid I upended a table in a restaurant by falling backwards and kicking the table up. Activated store alarms by fainting and catching the linked wired alarms that electrical type stores used to use. Surprised my parents didn’t leave me behind at home…I was a liability 😂

7Worfs · 17/10/2022 16:52

I’ve also had warning signs, and lost consciousness gradually - so always slowly fell to the ground without hurting myself, blacking out for literal seconds.
When I come to, I first start hearing (usually people fussing over me), then my eyes open, then speech returns shortly after. After 5-10mins I can go about my business again.

Exactly the same for me. I've fainted many times, mostly as a child.

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 17/10/2022 18:44

Only once a long time ago. Had been to give blood then walked from the donation centre to the town which was a good 40 minutes away. Bumped into my step mum and as I was talking to her, felt very peculiar and then just dropped. She later said that I went as white as a sheet - I guess that I must have had a big blood pressure drop. I came to pretty quickly and she put me in taxi home.

Yayyayitsaholiholiday · 17/10/2022 18:47

I was early 20’s. I’d been smoking skunk all day and drinking. Not a good combo!
Everyone went to the kebab shop and I was feeling a bit funny. I remember watching the fat drop off the kebab and it sent me over the edge thinking how gross it was and I went grey and was down! Out for about 20 seconds or so I think………

Almost fainted a few times doing long standing poses life modelling, but I can feel it coming on and know when I have to move or I’ll keel over!

junebirthdaygirl · 17/10/2022 19:13

Loads of times as also have low blood pressure..in school/ church/ on stage/ funerals..everywhere!!. It's a horrible feeling when you know it's coming. I cannot stand still for long eg in a queue.
You didn't feel any warning maybe as you were already lying down. It's the feeling of being about to fall that's awful. I avoid most situations now by staying seated and getting dh to queue and popping in beside him..
I also fainted while having Covid and it was a horrible sensation.

pompomdaisy · 17/10/2022 19:29

Yes once in an operating theatre as a student nurse!

Shlomping1234 · 17/10/2022 19:33

Several times during pregnancy, due to low blood pressure, anxiety and terrible sickness. I worked in a supermarket and was often found on the floor.

SkirridHill · 17/10/2022 19:33

Yes I have, shortly after DD was born. Fortunately I was lying down, so is that fainting or just plain old passing out? Grin

TheFeistyFeminist · 17/10/2022 19:46

Twice, both times after giving blood. Both times I felt strange just before hand. The second time I was out long enough that they could put me in the recovery position.

I want to give blood again especially as stocks are so low, but I'm nervous about it.

OnOldOlympus · 17/10/2022 19:58

@Soubriquet This is probably not what you want to hear but fainting with no warning signs is a red flag for the faint being caused by a heart problem, rather than it being a “simple” faint. That, coupled with the fact that you have covid, which we know can cause/exacerbate heart conditions, and in your shoes I’d be going to A&E.

LibbyL92 · 17/10/2022 20:01

I’ve gone to faint a couple of times but managed to stop it but sitting down and stopping.

one time however, which sounds like something from a movie!! I had a op and had quite a large scar with stitches. I went to the doctors for them to clean it and see to it. As they took the dressing off I looked down at it and fainted straight away!

I came round as soon as my head went back. But I laugh about it because I literally passed out from looking at a scar! 😂

BerryShots · 17/10/2022 20:04

Twice. Once as a 10 yo standing in the school library watching some slides.
Teacher leaned over me as I lay on the floor and asked if I was messing around.
Guess I had form for pissing about.

Second age 16 on a long haul flight queuing for loo. Turned to my sis and said I felt odd, next thing - on the floor. Excellent way to get fussed over for the rest of the flight.

Nearly third time when pregnant with DS2 during choir rehearsal. I took myself out of the room. I now have the confidence to risk everyone looking at me when I sit down or whatever, though I do think at the pre-faint stage the lack of O2 makes you not think straight.

My sis fainted while we were standing at the altar being bridesmaids. She's older than me and I was had been following whatever she did (think I was only 6 or so). I was terrified I'd have to do some important BM role!

I have low bp and have been asked if I faint when I stand up. I do sometimes feel dizzy but it's normal for me so I just grab something and steady myself.

rubydoobydoo · 17/10/2022 20:05

Loads of times- normally during blood tests but I have low blood pressure so sometimes happens when I stand up, or after experiencing sudden intense pain- most recently after I broke my elbow but I felt it coming so managed to lie down first!

I know the warning signs well and am normally able to lie down in time or warn someone.

Smilelesstalkmore · 17/10/2022 20:09

Yes, I fainted several times as a child, and I have also had quite a few episodes including more recently where I have nearly fainted but have been able to sit down or put my head forward and let it pass. I also then developed a sort of phobia or ever being in a situation where it would be difficult to sit down or leave if I felt faint which kind of led to panic attacks (fun!)..

Anyway, for me it is black spots forming in front of my eyes, a feeling of surrealness like I'm not really there and then sort going deaf/sounds around me just drowning out.

Eileen101 · 17/10/2022 20:12

Twice straight after giving birth to DC1. Came to draped over the side of the birth pool. When asked whether I felt able to walk with support to the bed, said yes, felt fine, crashed to the floor again.
Nearly did after having a wisdom tooth out - the dental nurse made me like back down again after I nearly hit the deck.

Crapshopper · 17/10/2022 20:13

I do it at the sight of blood which is really annoying because on a conscious level the sight of blood doesn’t bother me at all!
Very embarrassing taking ds to minor injuries with a cut to his head only to end up on the floor myself!

Also when giving blood.

Georgesgrumpymedicine · 17/10/2022 20:15

I have a blacking out feeling when I get tunnel vision everything literally goes black.
