Kitchen aids….wtf?!

ThePenIsBlue · 16/10/2022 22:13

Have a glut of vouchers I’ve been saving to buy a kitchen aid. / stand mixer type thing. Went on kitchen aid website and became utterly overwhelmed at all the different models. what the heck?! I just assumed there was one kitchen aid. Various colours. Now it looks as though I could either spend nearly £800 or a mere £350.
please can someone in the know explain the difference? I am tearing my hair out.

LOL! I've made scones and a few types of bread but generally nothing that needs extensive kneeding (so far). The motor has been able to hold up so far.

I'll take myself to the naughty step for suggesting an alternative to a Kitchen Aid device. Consider me sufficiently scolded 😆

Eh?
I asked how the motor held up to bread making, thats not scolding, thats asking your experience.

LookItsMeAgain · 17/10/2022 13:19

@AmuckAmuckAmuck - the scolding was in reply to @vera99's post to me admonishing me for daring to suggest a cheaper alternative, not your post asking about how the motor held up. I was trying to kill 2 birds with one stone and I didn't tag the respective posters in that message. I have now.

and it was a joking scold as was my post - happiness is possible without a Kitchen Aid and I did have a Lidl mixer before the Pistachio Beast arrived. 😁

If it gladdens your heart - then go for it. You won’t regret it. Even if you just look at it and sigh happily. Life is too short.

this thread has me thinking all nostalgically about my late DMs 1950s Sunbeam Mixer. Pale blue and cream, slight “spaceship” vibes about the design.
I almost wish I’d kept it…

The sunbeam spaceship mixer sounds glorious!

(am I on the naughty step too for not worshipping Kitchen Aid mixers?)

am I alone in wondering how many hours worth of hard manual slog OP has put in over the years to make some meringues?

I have an old skool “inherited” Kenwood which I know is gonna last forever. About ten years ago I coveted the glorious colours of KA mixers too but I’m over it now Wink

ReadingFestival2022 · 17/10/2022 15:01

Just to add to everyone elses comments. I got a KitchenAid - because let's be honest - it's a sexy looking piece of kit. But practically, it wasn't great. I ended up selling it and going back to the Kenwood. It depends if you want style over substance.

Depends on what you're doing of course but have heard similar. That said it's no Aga it's far more practical and more useful than that aspirational big beast. Probably more to go wrong with the Kenwood and the build quality always looks a bit suspect when you might be making a lifetime purchase.

My mum had a Sunbeam. Hers was a pale green. Nostalgia!

Wait to you get to the attachments.

I have the ice shaver attachment for home made 'Mr Frosties'....I've never been so happy.

Oh, it was probably personal to me then and I've used it. I'm a member of their club. I'm on a desktop but there is an app I believe that can find any active promotional codes for any site.

I have the standard artisan and it’s fine. I’m a pretty heavy baker though and so big batches (50 cupcakes, 100 gingerbread cookies etc). Plus started baking proper bread either at high hydration or stiff (ie, brioche and croissants) and the standard one can’t really hack it. If you are a big baker and you have an obscene number of vouchers, I’d go big or go home and get the Pro Line 7. It has the bigger motor. The 5&6 are apparently decent upgrades but the 7 really gets you power and volume. Enjoy!

Would you please share your gingerbread biscuit recipe?

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 17/10/2022 18:03

My kitchen aid one is amazing, it vibrated itself off the bench when I was using the bread hook, smashed a tile and kept on kneading with barely a scratch to itself. I was impressed.

MrsMontyD · 17/10/2022 18:42

I'm considering a purchase with my upcoming big birthday money, I can get 15% off on the Kitchen Aid website with BlueLightCard.

Would I regret buying a classic rather than an Artisan?

With the discount

Classic (black) £296.65
Artisan (Red) £381.65
Artisan (Red) with extra accessories £424.15

Or I can forget the 15% and have a free accessory, of which is only be interested in the bread bowl with baking lid which is £149.

Depends on how much you use it - but there are only 2 in our house and anything less than the Artisan would have been a false economy. Accessories bought after the event are a King's ransom so a bundle is well worth having. I looked up the glass bowl after others mentioned it on this thread and it's £89.

Rosehugger · 17/10/2022 09:59

I don't know if I was doing it wrong but it didn't cream well unless you had loads of ingredients. A normal size cake amount just got jammed up in beater or stuck to the bowl

@BarbaraofSeville Yes, I found that too. The Kitchenaids look a very similar design so I'd imagine they have the same issue. I ended up buying an electric mixer for £9.99 from Sainsbury's and using that all the time.

I also found this.
I think that my Kenwood actually worked much better, but I moved countries so couldn't take it.

milawops · 17/10/2022 20:03

I have the artisan. It's 8 years old and still going strong

MrsMontyD · 17/10/2022 20:29

@vera99 Unfortunately the bundle doesn't come with a glass bowl it comes with two stainless steel bowls 4.8L and 3L, a splatter guard, the flex edge beater and the three standard attachments.

I know I have that bundle but the price for the glass bowl and all the other accessories is just too much unless you are truly rich ! The Le Creuset mob as I call them.

HermioneKipper · 17/10/2022 21:19

I LOVE mine. 8 years old and still going strong. I use it a lot too. I have the classic in white although if I had My time again I’d get the pink one

The only difference, I believe , between the classic and the artisan is the colours.

Ewock · 17/10/2022 21:33

I tried the Aldi cheap version, not worth it and went right back as it didn't mix properly. I couldn't quite stretch to A Kitchen aid, but Costco had an offer on Kmix so I got one of those for £179.99 which I was happy with. It works really well, I do a lot of baking with my dd and she finds it easy to use.
