Kitchen aids….wtf?!

ThePenIsBlue · 16/10/2022 22:13

Have a glut of vouchers I’ve been saving to buy a kitchen aid. / stand mixer type thing. Went on kitchen aid website and became utterly overwhelmed at all the different models. what the heck?! I just assumed there was one kitchen aid. Various colours. Now it looks as though I could either spend nearly £800 or a mere £350.
please can someone in the know explain the difference? I am tearing my hair out.

Not sure what I was expecting but was really disappointed when I googled to see this work of art but its basically a mixer. Each to their own tho, I've got a load of gadget stuff I love too that some wouldn't get 😂

70billionthnamechange · 17/10/2022 05:23

I take it back, I just found a pink one

Rosehugger · 17/10/2022 05:25

I use my Kenwood food processor all the time but rarely if ever used my stand mixer. If you will use it, then fine. I suspect there are an awful

Rosehugger · 17/10/2022 05:28

...lot of unused mixers gathering dust up and down the country. Whereas I wouldn't be without the food processor or Braun multiquick soup wand/blender etc.

ClaryFairchild · 17/10/2022 05:33

I have the classic, happy with just white. My sister borrowed it recently after her Kenwood died and she is in love with it! Apparently the motor is much quieter.

TomPinch · 17/10/2022 06:16

You can normally find a Kenwood Chef or kmix for a fraction of the price of a Kitchenaid, and the reviews suggest they're about as good. I'm on my second kmix, having flogged the first one to death using the dough hook.

(To knead bread dough, just in case that creates an odd image)

Keroppi · 17/10/2022 07:41

@Tanktanktank Yes, I had that problem, so I painted it to match my kitchen and let it live on the side! Have you replaced the rubber feet on yours? They wear down and that decreases the airflow around the motor which means it might get jammed easier. Something to think about 😁

I have heard the newer kitchenaids now have plastic gears which some people don't like compared to the older metal ones. I think it's so you can replace the plastic gears cheaply rather than the full motor/board needing to be repaired.. I have heard Kitchenaid customer service is very good, too!

Ha ha. That was me up until about May 2020 when half the country had nothing to do except bake.

I sold the small Kenwood stand mixer that I'd had for a decade but used about twice for more than I paid for it on ebay because new ones were sold out everywhere.

I don't know if I was doing it wrong but it didn't cream well unless you had loads of ingredients. A normal size cake amount just got jammed up in beater or stuck to the bowl.

I hate the creaming stage so tend to do 'melting' recipes.

I still have a hand mixer, a small food processor and a Bamix stick blender which definitely will outlast me though.

Interesting about the mixing blade with silicone edge as my frustration is the blades not reaching the bottom of the bowl. I made something small (topping for eves pudding) the other day & it was hopeless. I'd have been better doing it by hand (which I did in the end).

I wonder this. They look so beautiful I really covet one but I don’t bake much. I would like to know what they can do.

I rarely bake but I use mine for shredding cooked chicken and making courgetti (needs a separate attachment though).

I bougth mine two years ago directly from KitchenAid, it's the plain white one but was on offer at £250 so decided to buy it. For the shredding chicken only it's been worth it Grin

Highfivemum · 17/10/2022 08:18

I have to say I had an old kenwood and when it died I couldn’t wait to get a kitchen aid. Was disappointed. Yes it looks lovely but isn’t as good as my old one.

courgettigreensadwater · 17/10/2022 08:20

@AlwaysLatte that's you told Hmm

LookItsMeAgain · 17/10/2022 08:21

I've got a Lidl imitation Kitchen Aid mixer and it's brilliant. A fraction of the cost of the original and mixes just as well.

If you have all of those vouchers, could you treat yourself to something from the Dyson range - a hairdryer or a fan maybe?

I bought the grater attachment for my KitchenAid and it is one of my most used kitchen items. It goes through cheese in seconds (I made a lot of meals with grated cheese for a while because it was so satisfying Grin) and vegetables are so much easier to grate.

You can adjust the height so that it reaches the bottom of the bowl. There is a screw thing on the front that you can loosen/tighten.

Cookerhood · 17/10/2022 08:29

Thank you @Amarette , I'll look at that later

lugeforlife · 17/10/2022 08:34

I have a cherry red artisan which my mum bought me for a big birthday. I love her (yes she has a name but so do my other kitchen appliances). I mostly use for baking but occasionally do mashed spuds. It's the only way I bake bread.

I have the big glass bowl and also the shredder attachment but I don't really use that tbh.

My mum got a kenwood for a wedding present in 1969. It's a bit too heavy for her to lift out these days but still works really well.

Trumpton · 17/10/2022 08:45

I remembered seeing this. DD has an Artisan and uses it a lot. I was happy to pass the baking baton onto her!

They come up on Black Friday offers in different places quite a bit, not sure if JL is one of those places but maybe worth waiting a few weeks to see?

AlwaysLatte · 17/10/2022 08:51

@AlwaysLatte that's you told
Isn't it! (Scurries off back to the kitchen with tail between legs)

AlwaysLatte · 17/10/2022 08:53

That’s great. I’ve done that for the last 20 years, and have been saving up my John Lewis vouchers for this, and want to spend silly amounts of money so I don’t have to stand and make meringue with a handheld mixer. So sue me.
I think you just outed yourself as my old headmistress there.
Enjoy your shopping! 🙂

To be fair, if it's a kitchen ornament you're after, Kitchenaids win hands down.

skippy67 · 17/10/2022 08:53

I got an Artisan last year as a Christmas gift. It's beautiful. It came with the glass bowl too. Will be getting the beater with the silicone blades and looking forward to making this year's Christmas cake in it.

Jellycatspyjamas · 17/10/2022 08:56

My kitchen aid is over 20 years old and looks and works like new. Easily one of the best kitchen gadgets for someone who bakes - mine is used 4/5 times weekly.

TenoringBehind · 17/10/2022 08:56

Mine is the basic one and is honestly the best alliance I’ve ever bought. Had it for 21 years now and used it a huge amount (most days). I had to replace one paddle attachment years ago but that was the old style one now replaced with the the silicone edge. The old one had a painted coating that flaked off after a few years.
