Meant to be going in to hospital for tests…. But anxiety is making me want to cancel

I’m meant to be going in to hospital for the day on Tuesday to have some tests done. I have to do a very strict diet the day before in preparation. The problem is that I just don’t feel like I can deal with it right now. I’m struggling with
major anxiety. Last week I attempted the strict diet the day before the test but my anxiety was so bad that my brain was going nuts and I was so starving hungry that I buckled and ate normally. I had to reschedule the test but I’m still feeling like it’s just beyond me right now.

the test isn’t for anything life threatening, it’s for stomach bacterial overgrowth.

What do you feel anxious about specifically? The change in eating, the test itself? What are the tests? perhaps someone can set your mind at ease if they have undertaken similar. Is there someone IRL who can support you through the fasting, keep you entertained and distracted etc..

It may not be life threatening but bacterial overgrowth can cause some uncomfortable symptoms and presumably you were referred for a reason, so it would be far better long term if you could find a way to get it done.

I can relate, I suffer with anxiety and dread hospital appointments often. I don't know rationally why really, they are always fine in the end and I feel much better having gone than I would if I'd cancelled, and of course without the test results it is difficult to get the best help from the consultant.

Anxiety isn't easy, ultimately you know your limits OP, if you really can't then you can't and that's that, no point feeling bad about it but if there is any chance you can get it done, then absolutely do that. It'll all be over before you know it and benefits you long term. What I would say is that if you have made a final decision not to proceed then do try to cancel ahead of time so the slot can be offered to someone else.

Hi Is it for SIBO? Can this not be changed to be done at home?

Won’t cancelling and wasting nhs time and money for a second time give you more anxiety?

@Lovecatsanddogs yes it’s for SIBO. I don’t know why it can’t be done at home- the train fare will cost me over £50!

Be careful they don't discharge you completely if you cancel again. They can't keep rescheduling.

Why don't you ring up tomorrow and see if they can send you a test in the post? It may be worth a try.
