Tesco is out of stock for everything - we’re doomed!

Logged onto the Tesco site this morning to book a slot for early November. Everything is showing out of stock! Perhaps they know something we don’t…
Apparently they only have one type of red wine to sell (Malbec) and that’s out of stock, too. Gonna be a long and hard winter.🙁

Just use Amazon Fresh. Easy.

Not everywhere has it.

No problems at all. Stop doing this! You are going to encourage people to panic buy!

It won't. Those of us in regions where this is an issue has had to deal with this for months and months. Why would we start panic buying now?
It is more annoying to see people claiming that it can not be happening.

Maireas · 16/10/2022 08:59

Just stop this now.
It's very silly and makes people panic.
Remember March 2020?

Yes, we must all pretend the things we see happening are not happening, and must not talk with other people.

Agree with a couple of posters. People expect everything on tap,at the click of a button and cheap! No, not me! I don't buy fruit and veg out of season,it's disgusting and tasteless, not to mention the airmiles impact. Apples from South Africa in winter, gased, irradiated, cooled,up to a year old. I don't shop online. Obviously if you have mobility or access issues that's different.

Oh I quite agree, people are so foolish to expect food to be on sale in the shops.

One of the genuine benefits of Brexit was we could wean ourselves off our pathetic obsession with food.

lightisnotwhite · 17/10/2022 10:50

This is what is required though to combat global warming. Less stuff. Less varieties of food means less production, transport even marketing and sales activities and less waste.

I give it 20 years and there’ll be no real food anymore ( except for the really rich who’ll enjoy fresh gourmet food). We’ll be eating environmentally friendly hydroponically grown pea protein shapes with minerals and vitamins added, for our own good.

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 10:51

What is happening is nothing to do with global warming.

No, this is not the answer. Important to cut the very high energy stuff - like flying in mange tout or eating beef more than rarely - but giving up food is really not going to happen.

nannybeach · 17/10/2022 10:56

I said "out of season" . I expect to be a millionaire, doesn't make it a fact. The shops aren't out of food.

We need to import things out of season, Britain is not self-sufficient in food.

We import flour, for example.

Rosehugger · 17/10/2022 11:02

Yes, when is UK banana season exactly? 🤔

And what about chickpeas? Both a staple part of my diet and very good for you.

ILeclercreturn · 17/10/2022 11:04

{antelopevalley · Today 10:51

What is happening is nothing to do with global warming.}

On what concrete evidence do you base this assertion?
As the earth is a large rock in a vacuum (space) which is irradiated (heated) by the sun, it is a fact that the earth is warming slightly. however the process is very slow but the changes in weather patterns are only partly due to the heating of the Sun. The shape of the world is gradually changing, as the tectonic plates shift and volcanoes cause the sea to alter. Tides are influenced by the moon and as a result gradual change of weather patterns are ongoing. All of which is a bit removed from your inability to get the foods you fancy from a supermarket but they are linked. Humans as a species will die out eventually, as will all other 'creatures' we think of today following some evolution.

Winceybincey · 17/10/2022 11:12

Yes there’s issues with my local Tesco too. At one point I couldn’t get 4litre whole milk for a few weeks, another time it was bananas. I’ve never known milk and bananas to be out of stock. Now many of my usuals are out of stock and I have to buy a more expensive brand or not have it at all. I don’t have time for shopping around. If I look at other supermarkets online, they’ll sometimes have the stuff that’s out of stock at Tesco but not have other stuff that I need that Tesco do have in stock.

oh well, at-least there is food.

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 11:14

I am well aware of the impact of global warming.
There are shortages of some goods like chickpeas due to global warning. Most shortages have nothing to do with this.

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 11:17

When I was young British news would have coverage of Russian supermarkets showing empty shelves and saying how they could not get basic foods like bananas. We used to be amazed.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/10/2022 11:55

i think the supermarkets should encourage buy british, buy seasonal
and customers should check the price of their out of season fruit and vegetables, think of the air miles involved and reconsider

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 11:57

Buy seasonal means very little fruit and veg over the winter.

Ambertonix · 17/10/2022 12:07

My tesco order is due this afternoon and ive just had my online receipt. Have got everything except iceberg lettuce and im getting a sub for that. Im in the North west for clarification. Order was just under £60.

ILeclercreturn · 17/10/2022 12:08

I am already enjoying Brussels sprouts but disappointed that the French regard parsnips as cattle food so not so easy to get.

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 11:57

Buy seasonal means very little fruit and veg over the winter.

not really, jsut different

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 12:30

I remember eating seasonally. Winter meant apples stored from the summer, oranges and satsumas - imported, figs - imported, maybe some pears stored, turnips, parsnips and stored carrots.
No fresh berries, salad, tomatoes, exotic fruits, bananas, etc.
Supplemented with tinned fruit and tinned tomatoes and sweetcorn.
It was way more limited than it is now. I can do it, I did before. But it is miles away from what people are used to now.

I know someone will pop up and claim they grew grapes in December in their heated greenhouse or similar. But what I have posted is what most people ate as it is what was in the shops.

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 12:31

Forgot brussel sprouts.
The traditional veg you have with Xmas dinner is basically because that is all that was available.

There's still 'food' though isn't there? Just maybe not what you wanted 🤷‍♀️

We are going to have to adapt for a while I think, bring out the old WWII 'make do and mend' mindset 🤷‍♀️

This will pass...as long as people are not stupid!

This will pass - as long as we have a government with a scintilla of common sense

nannybeach · 17/10/2022 13:05

Yes,I do actually have a grapevine,it's not on a heated green house. It's outside, just beginning to ripen. There are plenty of varieties that can be grown in the UK outside.Bananas arrive by boat,no airmiles involved. Chickpeas starting to be grown here, should be 2years away.
