What was your all time favourite Christmas present?

Hi all,

A thread has just reminded me of my favourite Christmas present I got when I was around 6 or 7 and I was just wondering about everyone else's?

Mine was a cat. I don't really agree with giving animals as present but my beloved cat died a year prior from cancer and my parents said I couldn't have another one so I just sort of accepted I'd never have a cat again (kids are dramatic haha) but we went to my grandmas and she was like "oh I've left your present on the bed, go and get it" and I walked in and there was this little cat with a pink bow wrapped around her neck ( it was removed straight away ) and honestly I was so happy and the cat was the sweetest little thing and she became my best friend, I'm even tearing up a bit now thinking about that Christmas.

Just a light hearted thread as I don't think Christmas should be about material things.

Princess pippa doll! She had really long hair and a sparkly green dress. Loved my pippas!

A Tiny Tears doll. Probably in about 1980.

I loved my Pippas too, Princess Pippa was definitely the best with her hair down to her feet.

A cardboard box that an aunt had filled with all sorts of pens, crayons, paper, scissers, glue, ribbon and other art supplies, plus a book about things to make. I still have the book 50 years later. Similarly a dress-up box made up of cast-off clothing, scarves, handbags, hats, empty perfume bottles, costume jewelry, etc. from my mother and her sisters.

As an older child, a microscope and polaroid camera. Any sort of art/craft materials.

We didn't get much plastic tat but rather "real" things.

70s child here..one of those red plastic things that you put mini bars of Dairy Milk in amd then you had to put a coin in to get one out, like your own miniature vending machine

This was my favourite too. And it was back in the days when Cadbury chocolate was really delicious!

Aww, @MarieIVanArkleStinks thank you, I meant every word of it.. I recall everything, from the special snowball drinks my Grandad made for me, to snuggling with my Nan watching the circus on tv (there was always one on TV over Christmas) My other Nan, Grandad, uncles & aunts coming over after Christmas lunch, James Bond on tv in the front room (Dad in his chair!) turkey sandwiches & all who weren't watching JB playing cards in the dining room.. Dad bought big boxes of crisps & crates of beer.. pure magic.. :-)

@Whistlesandbell my best friend attends a yearly pippa convention and has loads of them. She is 53 :)

My Rainbow brite doll and her horse Starlite. My daughter now has Starlite in her room that she asked to borrow.

Loved Rainbow Brite!! (And the Sprites!)

This thread is like a joyful memory lane. Also remember the snowball drinks (basically alcoholic milkshakes that were luminous yellow and always served with a glacé cherry!)

Snowballs were made with Warninks Advocaat and lemonade with a maraschino cherry on a cocktail stick.

My dad always made them for me, mum and nan at Christmas.

Yes they were a rather neon yellow too. 😁

I remember sipping a snowball left on a coffee table at a young age. I thought it was a particularly nice looking pineapple drink. Like when you freshly squeeze oranges and it looks so thick and tasty. It was vile. And possibly the reason I don’t like fizzy soft drinks.

MummyJ12 · 17/10/2022 07:52

@Coastalcreeksider you’re absolutely right, that’s how my dad made them too, but to me when I was a little girl, they looked just like frothy milkshakes! It’s just my memory of them……😊

inappropriateraspberry · 17/10/2022 08:55

This is like reading a list from an Argos catalogue circa 1985!

mamabear715 · 17/10/2022 12:41

Lol, the snowballs were delish! I felt SO grown up! ;-)

As a child - my Mum bought a teddy bear and hand made an absolutely beautiful wedding dress and veil for it to wear.Think lace, satin, tiny faux pearls and miniature roses. It must have taken her ages, was so beautiful and I think the first time I realised how much effort she put into making us happy.

As an adult - my sister was having a really tough time financially,so we all kept telling her we didn't need any presents,we just wanted to spend the day with her.

I'm a massive reader. She turned up on Christmas morning and gave me a huge (bin bag size) bag of second hand books from a charity shop. Not only was it a perfect present,I was just blown away by how thoughtful she was and I got very teary 😥

I was trying to describe this to my young adult kids a couple of weeks ago. They just could not see the point of it at all! They just looked at me blankly and kept saying things like, "So you had to put YOUR OWN money in it?! To get out the chocolate that you ALREADY HAD?!!" 😂

inappropriateraspberry · 17/10/2022 14:30

Just remembered this! Woke me up to Steve Wright on Radio 1 during school years! From Boots, loved it so much!

@TooGood2BeFalse
I would have been thrilled to bits with a bag full of books too, that was SO thoughtful of your sister! :-)
(I'm guessing the best pressie you've ever had from her, even when she's had money..)

LadyHelenaJustina · 17/10/2022 19:30

Tight grey corduroy jeans. My SIL (much older than me) got them for me when I was about 11. My parents had Rules about no jeans, and no tight trousers, so these were just fabulous. I was allowed to wear them because wonderful SIL (now sadly deceased) bought them for me.

WTF1974 · 17/10/2022 23:39

My favourite gifts were Major Morgan (poor man's version of Simon Says) & a Strawberry Shortcake doll that smelt of strawberries - great memories Smile

Davros · 18/10/2022 17:27

I also loved my Spiromatic, Etch-a-Sketch, Mousetrap
