What was your all time favourite Christmas present?

Hi all,

A thread has just reminded me of my favourite Christmas present I got when I was around 6 or 7 and I was just wondering about everyone else's?

Mine was a cat. I don't really agree with giving animals as present but my beloved cat died a year prior from cancer and my parents said I couldn't have another one so I just sort of accepted I'd never have a cat again (kids are dramatic haha) but we went to my grandmas and she was like "oh I've left your present on the bed, go and get it" and I walked in and there was this little cat with a pink bow wrapped around her neck ( it was removed straight away ) and honestly I was so happy and the cat was the sweetest little thing and she became my best friend, I'm even tearing up a bit now thinking about that Christmas.

Just a light hearted thread as I don't think Christmas should be about material things.

70s child here..one of those red plastic things that you put mini bars of Dairy Milk in amd then you had to put a coin in to get one out, like your own miniature vending machine

I ALWAYS wanted one of those, DH even tried to get me one to fulfil my childhood dream a few years ago but couldn't find one.

Mine was a large fluffy Care Bear (birthday bear to be precise) when I was about 8 from my uncle, who I had only ever met a handful of times - zero relationship with - but that one year he sent me a present, and I was delighted. I come from a very academic family, gifts were usually educational, so it was frivolous magic.

When I was four (in 1949) my parents bought me the most incredible doll I had ever seen. It was about two foot tall, with long, blond, curly hair, eyelashes to die for and you could walk it in front of you. I was enthralled for all of 30 seconds before the cat and I both dived into the cardboard box and spent the next two hours playing with the box and wrapping paper 😃

No way! It even that exciting but was so soft and I loved the fact mum bought it even though it was overpriced soft toy!

Have you ever been to a toy fair? They hold them in big halls they hire, might be a school or an exhibition centre. Absolutely fascinating to see the toys from your childhood and you might even pick one of those machines up, I have seen them at a toy fair. We go once or twice a year as husband is a model train enthusiast and they are often toys and trains.

Be careful, you might find an old doll for £2 and another is £200. Best to be careful if taking children.

My Sindy house. The three storey one with the lift up the side. I had no idea I was getting it so it was a total surprise.

I used to love Victoria Plum! I can remember getting a soap set.

ArcaneWireless · 16/10/2022 18:45

A stocking.

I moved back in with my parents to just get my bearings after a disastrous relationship. Ran with not much to my name/what I could carry.

My mam put a little stocking (baggy old sock) on my door. Same as when I was little when we didn’t have much.

A shiny red apple, gold chocolate coins, a tangerine, nuts and a little thoughtful but inexpensive gift.

All the love in the world was in that sock and I don’t think I will ever have something so absolutely perfect.

@AppleDumplingWithCustard That hospital is amazing. I would have loved that. You are so lucky.

Funkyslippers · 16/10/2022 18:53

My very own Kodak camera. I felt so grown up!

inheritanceshiteagain · 16/10/2022 18:55

A toy post office. The tiny envelopes and stamps fascinated me. Ditto the toy sweet shop with miniature bottles of tiny sweets

MoonahSton · 16/10/2022 19:08

I got a brand new mountain bike when I was about 9 or 10. I'm the youngest so I'd never had my own bike before, always my siblings hand me downs. I was SO excited. There's a photo of me on it in the snowy garden in my nightie - I couldn't wait to get dressed Grin

I'm another one who wanted a Mr Frosty and never got one (my mum said it was a waste of money).
When I went to uni, we were chatting about it one evening in halls, none of us had had one. So we went to Toys R Us and clubbed together and bought one. It was crap. Gutted.

My Rainbow brite doll and her horse Starlite. My daughter now has Starlite in her room that she asked to borrow.

Badger1970 · 16/10/2022 19:11

Mine was my second grandchild, she was born on the 20th and came home for Christmas Eve (poor DD had a massive PPH and ended up in ITU so it was all very stressful). It was wonderful having the two of them sitting snuggled up by the fire in the living room with her very besotted little brother - best Christmas day ever.

Funkyslippers · 16/10/2022 19:40

inheritanceshiteagain I bought a little post office for my DD about 8 years ago. Had such fun playing with it, and sometimes I let her join in too 🤣

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 16/10/2022 19:48

A big, beautiful rag doll I had for Christmas as a young child. I called her 'Rags' (how original!) and I still have her, but she's very old.

I'm also very fond of the lava lamp my mum gave me for my birthday once. It must be two decades old at least, and has been through numerous wax bottles of various colours. I love it as much now as I ever did.

Nothing springs to mind - & I was probably a spoiled brat! Christmases make me think of family & my beloved late grandparents & parents.. feeling loved & cherished. I think that was the best gift EVER.

I must be going soft in my old age (or am pre-menstrual!) but this made me well up. Beautiful sentiment.

As a child of the 80’s I hated the dairy milk dispensers because they were always disappointing. It seemed like every single time I went somewhere they had older dc there would always be one in a toy box or cupboard but with no dairy milk. And the parents or whatever adult was in charge always wanted to offer me other treats to eat as compensation, seemingly missing the point that I didn’t want to eat them I just wanted to dispense them!
I don’t think it had occurred to childhood me that the chocolate was long gone and I always lived in hope of finding one that I could play with properly. Ditto the toy sweet shops. I didn’t like anything sweet and couldn’t understand why anyone would ruin a good toy by eating an essential part.
