If you can run 5k how long does it take you and do you stop/walk inbetween?

A scientific survey, I know, but I've recently set myself a goal to run 5k without stopping and wonder how long on average it should take or it takes you? I'm not training for any particular event so it's more of a fitness target for myself.

When I could run (sob! Athritis in knees now and ankle) it took me about 35 mins and about 60 mins to do 10k

God I miss being able to run !

LIC1985 · 13/10/2022 05:40

35mins is my average but I was chuffed to get to 32 recently ! Sub 30 is my aim

Simonjt · 13/10/2022 06:03

It varies between 19 to 21 minutes usually.

About 30mins running 5k

Monkeytapper · 13/10/2022 06:06

And my husband can do it in 19mins if a flat course

sarahc336 · 13/10/2022 06:14

They say the average time for 5km in 30 mins so anywhere in and around that time then your on track op x

pd339 · 13/10/2022 06:16

About 22 minutes. But I've been running for years and love it.

CirreltheSquirrel · 13/10/2022 06:18

My PB from 15 years ago is 22.31 but I then slowed down to mid/high 20s, then stopped running altogether when I took up cycling. I've just got back into it and am working through couch to 5k at the moment. My best time so far is just under 34 minutes which still includes some walking sections, I'm hopeful that I'll be back in the 20s when I run the full distance.

chutneypig · 13/10/2022 06:24

My first 5k after c25k was around 35 minutes. I started parkrun after that and did take walk breaks for the first 25 I did. Timewise they'd have been between 30 and 35 minutes.

I'm always pleased at under 30, I've done faster, I'm not at my fittest now so non stop would be around 32 at the moment.

I'm a fan of a strategic walk break anyway, one of my slowest half marathons was when I decided not to take any. And I certainly didn't enjoy it as much.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 13/10/2022 06:36

Somewhere between 36 and 40 minutes depending how hilly it is. I usually walk up the steeper hills but otherwise keep running. I am mid 40s, overweight and currently only run once a week. When I started I did run/walk and it took well over 40 minutes on the flat. My fastest time was about 30 minutes 30 seconds just before lockdown when I was training for a 10k and my ultimate goal is to break the 30 minute mark but I will need to lose some weight and do some midweek training for that to happen.

Imisscoffee2021 · 13/10/2022 06:37

Between 29 and 31 mins without stopping

PrunellaMcTat · 13/10/2022 06:44

This has been an interesting thread.
I'm 44 and used to be fit.
Signed up for a 5k park-run sort of thing 3 weeks ago.
34mins for the first 2, and 31mins last time. Am aiming for under 30.
Good to know that's about right.

Gezunteit1 · 13/10/2022 06:45

For the person who said it's impossible, there are many men who can complete in 16/17 minutes on a regular basis at parkruns.

rainbowandglitter · 13/10/2022 06:46

My pb was 22 mins a few years ago. I then switched to powerlifting so now it's about 27 mins.

dreamcatchmee · 13/10/2022 06:49

Between 35-45 mins. Couch to 5k was so amazing at achieving the non stop 5k.
Don't worry too much on time, if you run it in 20 mins or 60 mins, you're still running 5k!
I really enjoyed parkrun, I found it to be such a friendly community. Have fun :)

YaWeeFurryBastard · 13/10/2022 06:53

Around 45 mins without stopping. I am aware this is slower than a snail but to be honest I’m so chuffed with myself for completing it that I don’t care. My goal is sub 30 minutes.

QuietNeighbour · 13/10/2022 06:57

About 30 mins without stopping is usual. Age 51 and started running in my late 40s with C25K. Improved my pace through regular Parkruns. Have lost my mojo with social running thanks to lockdown etc but have maintained fairly regular longer runs. I wanted to get under an hour for 10k but haven’t yet achieved it. Longest run more like 17-18k and that includes walk breaks. The long slow runs help improve your capacity for shorter faster runs.

evilharpy · 13/10/2022 06:57

I haven't run for over a year due to injury and surgery and hadn't done any races for several years before that, but my normal non-race 5k time was about 29 minutes. Parkrun PB was 25 something and my 10k pb was 55 something.

I have run with several clubs with many many speedy runners and was always at the back of the pack Grin but never cared. The tea and biscuits afterwards was always good.

QuietNeighbour · 13/10/2022 06:59

Oh and my PB was 27 mins but I’m only getting older so it seems unlikely I’ll get back to that

cliffdiver · 13/10/2022 07:02

Sub 31 minutes is my best (only by 1 second, but still Wink). Not stopping.

That was before summer when I was running 2/3 times per week.

I'm 36.

lovelilies · 13/10/2022 07:08

About 30 if I don't stop and I find that really hard.

I use Jeff Galloway method (jeffing) and can run it on 28/29 using run walk method usually run 60 secs walk 30 secs, I have RA and it prevents injury for me and also am not nearly as out of breath as heart rate recovers during each walk!

I'm 38 and that was my PB when I first started running, I can't really be bothered to go that fast anymore so generally do it in about 30.

DinosApple · 13/10/2022 07:14

About 40 minutes.

Never liked running in PE, started as an adult and it's ok (easier since c25k tell you how to do it and breathe, so better than school).
But I haven't had an epiphany and still don't enjoy it!

Lisbeth50 · 13/10/2022 07:15

30 mins if I'm trying hard, 32ish if I'm jogging. Pb is 28 mins but that was a few years ago and I've never got near it since!

bluenails2002 · 13/10/2022 07:19

Did c25k in 2020 and still running now. PB is 27 mins but generally is about 29 mins these days....when I first did it I was at 35 mins so have gradually got faster. I'm 53 and feel fitter now than I did in my 40s, love running after never being able to stick to other exercise
