If you can run 5k how long does it take you and do you stop/walk inbetween?

A scientific survey, I know, but I've recently set myself a goal to run 5k without stopping and wonder how long on average it should take or it takes you? I'm not training for any particular event so it's more of a fitness target for myself.

I’m 64. Did it today in 34 mins including up a long hill. Bit on the slow side for this run for me but only by a minute or two. C25K got me started.

CatherinedeBourgh · 12/10/2022 22:45

Depends a lot on the terrain!

But about half an hour if it's not too tricky.

Gezunteit1 · 12/10/2022 22:46

I could do it in 24-26 a few years back, but I've only just restarted running and it's 32-33 atm. Hoping to get back into it

13 yr old DS does it in 23 mins - he runs/competes a lot. I am significantly slower at c.30 mins.

Gezunteit1 · 12/10/2022 22:47

There were men at my parkrun completing it in 15 minutes, don't know how they do it!

When I’m out of shape it’s about 25 minutes. When I’m “on it” my best time outdoors is 19:57.

soupmaker · 12/10/2022 22:49

I'm over 50 and overweight. Usually sub-35 minutes non-stop including on hills. Used to be able to run sub-30 but lockdowns have not been kind to me.

If you have to stop then you can’t run 5k, surely 😵‍💫 otherwise everyone would be able to answer this question. For me, 35 mins ish which I assume must be pretty slow as I hate running and am fat (size 18).

It's not about whether you stop or not. It's about how long it takes to cover the distance. Pretty sure I stopped when I ran my park run pb of circa 23 mins....

Nothing wrong with stopping, as long as you start again Grin

There have been about 150 men who have ever broken fifteen minutes. I’m skeptical that you have seen multiple men doing it regularly.

tacoxx · 12/10/2022 22:51

Usually 25-27. Best time just under 23

So if someone trots along stopping every minute they can still claim they can run a 5k? I totally get what you’re saying and I’m getting off topic but surely there is a line somewhere 😄

About 35 minutes. No stopping. My target is 30 minutes.

This is me too!

Verite1 · 12/10/2022 23:04

Between 31-32 minutes is my average for 5k. Never stop or I can’t start again!

newyeardelurker · 12/10/2022 23:08

I am 50 ish and slow, around 38 min now. Was 29-32 min 2-3 years ago and not sure why I've slowed so much. Now I look for not stopping and keeping my heart rate in zone 5 according to my garmin. But its also a wellbeing thing, to let my mind roam free, enjoy the green views, and I don't need to be fast for that.

AuntieStella · 12/10/2022 23:12

When fit and before I had covid, about 23 minutes

Nowadays I struggle to get sub-30 and am often 33+

Minesababycham · 12/10/2022 23:19

31-32min at 50. Never been super speedy though, always somewhere around 30min mark for past 20 years

skippy67 · 12/10/2022 23:31

I ran my last 5k about a year ago in 31 minutes and 1 second. I haven't done it since as I hate running😅

skippy67 · 12/10/2022 23:31

Without stopping!

arghtriffid · 12/10/2022 23:35

27 mins. I'm 50.

HorribleHerstory · 12/10/2022 23:35

Fastest ever is 33 mins, but I’m working on it.

if I just popped out now for a 5km without stopping chances are it would be 35 something. early 40s no stopping

Longer legs on average. More power in the hinges at the hips due to not having a childbirth-compatible pelvis, typically faster explosive trigger movements in the muscles, plus all the testosterome on top of that. physiologically an out of shape under-trained male can generally outrun a lot of highly trained and fit females. This is why there are Male and Female categories for medals.

SunflowerSmith · 13/10/2022 00:03

I did C25K a few years ago and kept up the running for about 6 months afterwards, it took me about 40 minutes.
I did join a running club which had 70 members and I was always last.

C25K is really good, I was 45, overweight and hadn't gone above walking speed since primary school,. On day one I was knackered but did the 5k on day 11! I just kept running through the walk sections and got to the end.
I did give up running in the end though because I never fell in love with it, I didn't enjoy being out of breath or in pain so nowadays stick to walking the dogs for exercise.

I'm 52 and race competitively.
I'm better at half marathon distance (relatively!) - 5k just hurts!

Apollonia1 · 13/10/2022 00:57

I used to run 5k a few times a week, in just under 30 mins (about 29 mins 50 seconds!)
I was aged mid-40s. Now a few years later my knees are painful, so I don't run at all. I miss it.

garlictwist · 13/10/2022 05:20

I never measure how far or fast I run, I just go out and do what I fancy. However I did park run the other week and it took me 23 mins. Our park is very flat though.
