If you can run 5k how long does it take you and do you stop/walk inbetween?

A scientific survey, I know, but I've recently set myself a goal to run 5k without stopping and wonder how long on average it should take or it takes you? I'm not training for any particular event so it's more of a fitness target for myself.

Around 40 mins with LOTS of walk breaks, which get longer and more frequent as the time rolls on! I'd love to be able to run it non-stop but think it's always going to be beyond me. Good luck in your challenge... I'm sure you'll do brilliantly!

If you're a beginner runner, I think 30 mins is a good target to aim for. You may well be slower than that at first, but it's a reasonable benchmark for someone new to running.

Not done it in a while but I started on a pretty hilly one round my local area and the first time was about 38mins with no stopping but slowing right down at times. I managed to get it down to 30mins, just running the same route a few times a week, but stopped going out because it was getting too hot (I much prefer when it's cooler and a bit drizzly and I'm a big lazy bones at heart)

I've done it in 30 minutes once with a perfectly flat unobstructed route. But I have lost a lot of strength and fitness recently and it's typically 40 minutes if I do without slowing down to walk, but I do typically walk for a minute in the middle.

If you find yourself needing to take walk breaks, it might be because your cardio vascular system hasn't caught up with the training effect on your major muscle groups like legs and glutes.

Slow your pace way down, so you could sing 'old McDonald had a farm, ei-ei-ei-o' if you wanted to.

Once you find the pace that you can sustain for how ever long it takes you to cover your chosen distance, keep practising at that speed for a while.

Don't force it, you will find over time your pace will pick up and your time will improve.

Enjoy.

In my prime 27 mins, post covid 31 mins.
I'm very happy with 10 minute miles.

My primary goal is to enjoy the movement, so if I want to walk I do. I'll take an hour to do 4 miles in my local park, it's beautiful and I stop to enjoy it.

At the moment on the flat about 24 on hills about 28. I usually run on hills and just love being outside free to choose whatever path I want that day so don't often run an exact 5k.

20 mins if I'm racing. Can be up to 25 as a training run, depending on what sort of run I'm doing.

It takes me 34 minutes without stopping. I'm a slightly overweight, 48 year old. Started running in the 2nd covid lockdown, purely for exercise, not interested in packrun or races.

I have never managed to get under 30mins, did 30 mins 8 secs once. Usually 31-33mins. Age 41, started jogging in lockdown. Ill never be speedy, but I love it, its part of my life now and benefits me greatly in all sorts of ways. I was doing the odd 10k last year but seem to have stopped that and need to get back to it.

About 34 minutes on average but it is a bit hilly round here and I do allow myself the occasional 30 second (or thereabouts) walk uphill, depending on how fit I feel or how hot it is.

Best ever was 28 or 29 mins, more usually is 30 mins. Early/mid 40s. I usually do walk briefly at some point!

This gives an indication of what might be reasonable at your age (male times at the top, female if you scroll down]].

Impressed at 24 mins in mid 50s! I am younger and stuck at 28-30 mins!

I agree with this - good advice.

Also - as a beginner there's not much point comparing yourself to some of the times quoted above. For example, I've been running (fell, trail and ultras) for over 15 years now - of course I can do 5km at a reasonable pace without stopping! You will be able to do so too, but it'll take you time to work up to it.

Take walk breaks as needed to start, just aim to reduce them. For the first few months, don't think about your pace at all - pace can come later once you have the miles in your legs.

My pb is just over 27 mins without stopping. I haven’t really done much since the first lockdown though and would be nowhere near that now - probably 35 mins with a couple of brisk walk breaks.
I’m pregnant at the moment and planning to start from scratch with c25k once baby’s here and I’m recovered.

You're almost certainly trying to go too fast.

Try doing 30 secs of slow running, followed by a minute of walking, then repeat. Do a few sessions like that before trying to increase the proportion of running.

If you have to stop then you can’t run 5k, surely 😵‍💫 otherwise everyone would be able to answer this question. For me, 35 mins ish which I assume must be pretty slow as I hate running and am fat (size 18).

My PR was 22 minutes, I’m just staring to get back to running after pregnancy and I’m done between 25-26 minutes
