If there is a ‘too old’. Just your opinion please.

My DD is just turned 15 and I have said no this year.

I reckon about 13 max.

JemimaPuddledock · 11/10/2022 18:50

Sorry, it’s a dreadful tradition. Anything older than 8 is even worse.

I’d say after 16 or once you’re in sixth form/college. However I wouldn’t judge anyone older incase they are developmentally delayed.

BeautifulDragon · 11/10/2022 18:52

I would say secondary school, unless they are taking a younger sibling.

My eldest is 14. She really wants to go trick or treating as it's usually quite a fun event where we live.

I've said if she goes with her 11 year old sister it should be OK. To be honest as long as they're dressed up and behaving well then I think it's fine for teens to trick or treat. 16 year olds just wearing black hoodies and demanding sweets, not so much.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/10/2022 18:53

I'd say 14 or 15 - basically when you don't look like a child.

And no, it is not a dreadful tradition.

Dollydea · 11/10/2022 18:55

Think it depends on the area.
We used to live in a very remote village in the middle of nowhere, there wasn't many teens and absolutely nothing for them to do, they used to trick or treat up to the age of about 14, mostly out of boredom I think.

We now live in a busy area and I won't let DD 12 trick or treat this year.

BeautifulDragon · 11/10/2022 18:57

I wouldn't open the door to a group of teens, just kids with parents.

Blanketpolicy · 11/10/2022 18:59

We are in Scotland so here it is guising and they are expected to not only dress up but also "do a turn". Although there are some exceptions, most are usually too cool 😎 to do it, especially in front of their friends, beyond primary which is around the right age to stop anyway.

JemimaPuddledock · 11/10/2022 18:59

I strongly disagree with teenagers doing it.
small children dressed up and with parents I can almost tolerate but still think it’s awful. Santa believing age is about the cut off.

Clairenlea · 11/10/2022 19:01

Bloody hell. There’s some Halloween bah humbugs here! As long as everyone is enjoying it, what’s the problem?

Any older than primary is too old I think.

MissingNashville · 11/10/2022 19:02

Any kids above 8 is too old I think. My kids didn’t do it, we always had a party instead. We don’t have any neighbours close by so don’t really get any but if any college age kid turned up I’d give them a piece of fruit. 😅 Kids that old would be cheeky.

14 I think. I feel sorry for any of the 12 or 13 year olds because they do want to be seen as more mature, but they're still kids who love free sweets too

This.

Horrible custom. Buy sweets for your own children and don’t disturb other people.

We spend the other 364 days a year telling children not to accept sweets from strangers, but on one dark autumnal night it’s ok to not only take sweets from strangers, but to also knock on doors pestering people.

Gwenhwyfar · 11/10/2022 19:07

I think it's really intimidating for old people or people who live alone to have a group of teenagers turn up asking for money with the threat of a trick if you don't pay up.

Annabananna1 · 11/10/2022 19:08

I love Halloween and happy to indulge anyone in trick or treat! I hand chocolate to the parents when they're with little uns.

I think probably though 15 is maximum, might be a bit weird after that the teens usually go to parties or do their own thing

Now imagining an alternate universe where Trick or Treat is solely pregnant women demanding chocolate with menaces. Who would dare to say no?

Soubriquet · 11/10/2022 19:09

Tbh, I wish you was never too old. But I can see how it would be intimidating for older teens and adults to be on your doorstep.

15 I think is still going ok. 17, is when I might raise my eye

DenholmElliot1 · 11/10/2022 19:10

It's more a question of size and quantity than age to be honest.

A couple of petite 15 year old girls in cute witch outfits who have obviously spent time doing their make-up aren't threatening.

Six strapping 13 year old lads with scary masks on - not so innocent looking.

NCnotmyusualone · 11/10/2022 19:11

Wow, some right old miseries here tonight. We have older teens come and knock round here as well as the really small kids, and anything in between. it’s all very polite, and they have some great costumes. No skin off my nose if a 16/17 year old fancies
a free chocolate bar one night a year.

I will say everyone here sticks by the code of only knocking on houses with lit pumpkins or halloween decorations out though. My neighbours have never been trick or treated, as they never display anything “spooky”.

BusySittingDown · 11/10/2022 19:12

Round here we get loads of groups of teens trick or treating but they're well mannered and just having fun.

My eldest is 15 and is gutted that really she's too old (she's really tall so can't pass for younger). I told her that as long as she goes with her little sister it's fine. My youngest, her sister, has just started High School so is probably "too old" in some people's opinions but she's tiny and can pass for about 8 😂.

We're moving soon but Halloween where we currently live is ace. Everyone gets really into it - there are loads of decorations up already so they want to make the most of their last Halloween here.
