If there is a ‘too old’. Just your opinion please.

I suspect some teens only do it to scare or annoy the younger ones. I saw a video last year where someone was looking forward to throwing fake blood and chasing little kids.

Last year DD was 15 and they dressed up as characters from Mariokart. I spent hours making a Bowser costume including the shell and a onesie.
They went out but didn’t knock on doors, it was more the see and be seen that they wanted.
This year she is planning on answering the door instead.

Thats sounds like brilliant fun!

When they look like large teenagers rather than cute children.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/10/2022 19:19

Guising for little ones is quite sweet, we did that in Scotland as children and i remember it fondly. The largely American import of 'trick or treat' begging with menaces is not something I am happy with at any age and I have never allowed my DC to be involved in it.

fruitstick · 11/10/2022 19:22

We have a proper route in our village. People decorate their houses and leave pumpkins outside the door.

The doors without pumpkins are left well alone.

It's fun.

I said that over 13, they can still dress up etc but they stay at home and answer the door to the little ones.

Secondary school unless with a younger sibling.

Someone I work with overheard a group of teens discussing whether it was worth trick or treating this year, apparently they wanted money for weed and we’re talking about whether people would give money or sweets. 🤣 🎃

My eldest is 13 and has ASD. She doesn't understand that she's getting too old for it.
I've said she can come with me and her little sister this year as the last one.

OldClothes · 11/10/2022 19:24

@MissingNashville 😂

georgarina · 11/10/2022 19:26

12/13 is the oldest in my experience. You transition from trick or treating to dressing up and going to Halloween parties.

(Grew up in the US where Halloween is more of a thing in general)

Bloody hell. There’s some Halloween bah humbugs here! As long as everyone is enjoying it, what’s the problem?

Because the people who's doors you're knocking on aren't enjoying being pestered by a group of kids who are usually too old to be doing it. As a PP said, buy your kids their own sweets!

ChilliBandit · 11/10/2022 19:32

We don’t go out but really enjoy answering the door to the little kids, fussing over their costumes and handing out sweets. Once they get to 13+ it can be a little intimidating opening to door to big groups of them as some are as tall as adults. So I say probably last year of primary.

UWhatNow · 11/10/2022 19:37

Don’t understand the Halloween humbugs - we didn’t decorate last year and got no visitors despite doing it every year. I’d bought loads of sweets but just ran out of steam and cba to decorate. I expected that kids would still knock because we are one the known houses but that’s how dutiful they are - ‘no pumpkin don’t disturb’.

I actually don’t mind teens as long are in fancy dress and behave. I love seeing the kids dressed up - it’s a lovely community feeling.

What I was going to write- totally agree

TeenDivided · 11/10/2022 19:40

I think around 14 but I don't mind older if properly participating.

Mainly I object to not properly dressed up kids of whatever age and I don't really like groups of more than 6/8.

No one should be knocking on doors of anyone who hasn't shown they are participating by putting out a pumpkin or similar. Thems the rules.

HappyHappyHermit · 11/10/2022 19:44

I would say 10 max. Horrible tradition though and one it would be better to leave behind.

Weepingwillows12 · 11/10/2022 19:44

I think finishing primary is when you stop. After that parties is fine but not knocking. Maybe if you were with younger siblings but not a group of teenagers.

SingingSands · 11/10/2022 19:44

Up to about 16 round here. Only houses that are decorated get visited. I've lived here 20 years and never had a problem. It is one of the highlights of the year for me as it's such a family-friendly evening and I love seeing the kids dressed up. My own kids are too old now eldest is away at Uni, but we still decorate the front path and door and have a big bowl of sweets ready.

Invisableperson · 11/10/2022 19:44

Any person who is disappointed by sweets & treats and expects money us too old

Banana2079 · 11/10/2022 19:46

I load of killjoys on here you’ll never too old to trick or treat if you don’t want to give you sweets that’s okay I’ve had older people come into my house you look 18 or 19 trick-or-treating and I find it really funny and give them a little something x

Speedweed · 11/10/2022 19:47

When the kids look into the bowl of sweets and scowl because it's not fags and alcohol...

Ponderingwindow · 11/10/2022 19:47

the older teens we get tend to be a surprisingly wholesome bunch. Why try to rush them to adulthood.

FredaFox · 11/10/2022 19:47

I'd say primary age but I'm another bath humbug who doesn't want people at my door
I'm anxious and live alone, it's intimidating
My mum is disabled and also wouldn't want people even if lovely kids at the door

Have a party at home, decorate, buy your own sweets
