What would your (sensible) ideal home have?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/10/2022 10:44

I say sensible as in affordable and not Lottery win/dream home levels.

I currently live in a (albeit very nice) flat, so my perfect (acheiveable) family home would have:-

  • A lawned back garden with space at the back for a couple of veg planters, ideally south facing.
  • A kitchen big enough to put a sofa in (along with the dining table it currently has)
  • a drive - never actually been bothered about this but we have some new flat seeing built opposite and street parking is about to become WAY worse
  • a normal size for the third bedroom (scouting for house moves and all three beds I can find, the third bed is a boxroom over the stairs)
  • terraced - I'll trade off any possible noise disturbance for the fact that I won't lose heat out of a gable end!
  • to take my current laundry room, log burner and office space with me in addition to what's there

Simple pleasures really!

Oh I’ve thought a lot about this.

  1. hard floors with underfloor heating throughout downstairs
  2. pantry cupboard with coffee machine, toaster, cereals etc in so I can have clear kitchen worktops
  3. utility room with toilet, tumble drier and washing machine, worktop to fold clothes with sink, cupboard for washing and cleaning products and space to store iron, ironing board, broom, hoover, mop bucket and laundry basket
  4. built in floor to ceiling cupboards/wardrobes in every room so I can just shut the doors and hide all the junk (especially shoes)
  5. Mediterranean style covered patio so I can sit outside when it’s raining (one of my favourite sounds)
  6. a deep drawer for all the bastard Tupperware
  7. bins in drawers so they can be hidden
  8. a garage for all DIY bits and bikes, tents, etc
  9. big windows/doors for as much natural light as possible
  10. shower tap thing in kitchen to wash all fruit and veg with

2 more bedrooms so we don't have to play musical bedrooms depending on which kids are here (all adults) room for a greenhouse and veg patch but most of all a double garage

gogohmm · 11/10/2022 12:55

Ps I had all of this but exh left me so had to sell

A nice view.

Walking distance of leisure centre with a pool, a small supermarket and a good coffee shop to meet up with local friends. Somewhere with a sense of community.

A walled, sunny, private small-medium garden (no more cutting hedges or replacing fences that collapse in the winter) that is it’s big enough for a lawn, it needs to be flat and regularly shaped to take a robot lawnmower. Room for a shed.

I would love a covered terrace off the kitchen where I can sit if it’s raining.

Two double bedrooms and a room for an office/hobbies.

Off road parking for at least two cars so my friends can easily visit me.

Two loos. A decent size shower or at good over bath shower.

Utility room with space for a drying rack. Can contain one of the loos.

Kitchen diner with room for a sofa and a view of the garden and separate cosy lounge with log burner.

Modern and well insulated but with character. Not on a housing estate.

Oh, I could go on. I am seriously thinking about moving at the moment, can you tell?

Imissmoominmama · 11/10/2022 13:44

A boot/utility room.

WoolyMammoth55 · 11/10/2022 13:50

Fun game!

The usuals:
spare room
PLUS home office room
en suite for master
(could just about get all those in out current place if we converted the loft!)
utility room
boot room for wet coats, bikes, etc with dog shower area!
slightly larger garden
veg patch and fruit trees - yes please!

AND:
Promised DH a sauna and plunge pool in the next house
(may have over-extended myself there!)

Basically very luck though to have what we've got <3

I want some storage in my home!
Atm my house has three reception rooms (sitting room, kids playroom and dining room) kitchen, utility area and bathroom on ground floor
X3 bedrooms and a bathroom in first floor.
Second floor is loft extension consisting of a WC and x2 bedrooms but we currently use one of them bedrooms for storage like what you'd put in a loft and the other bedroom is a spare bed...

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 11/10/2022 13:53

A utility/laundry room
A downstairs loo and shower room, right by the garden, for hosing down muddy DD
A separate, grown-up sitting room free of plastic crap
One bedroom that isn’t used as an office, so we could have guests.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 11/10/2022 14:01

Storage
Utility room
Mud or cloakroom type thing
A proper garden
A bit more open plan
Room for a big table in the kitchen
Room for a library/non TV living room

reallyworriedjobhunter · 11/10/2022 14:03

A pantry
A proper dining room
A driveway
A porch
A pond

ThreeRingCircus · 11/10/2022 14:39

I love my house but the things it's lacking that I'd really like are:

Driveway parking for two cars

A kitchen big enough to have a dining table in there (and ideally a sofa!)

A low-maintenance garden that isn't overlooked. Doesn't have to be huge, just enough space to sit out and have a BBQ and for a swing or trampoline for DDs.

A separate guest room and office space, happy for this to be the same room as we only have overnight guests every couple of months.

A utility room big enough for washing machine, tumble dryer, coats, bags and shoes.

A light, spacious hallway. My sister's house isn't huge at all but has a lovely sized hallway and it just makes the whole house feel bigger.

HotMess21 · 11/10/2022 14:43

Nearest neighbour at least one mile away

Vampirethriller · 11/10/2022 14:45

My dream house is one of those 1950s semis with a bay window, archway through to the dining room, kitchen with space for a table, a garden, three bedrooms.

PositiveLife · 11/10/2022 15:26

2 floors (currently our house is over 4 floors and it's a killer going up and down the stairs)

Utility room
Boot room for muddy gear
Secure back garden (with garage or shed for storage)
2nd toilet
Dedicated parking or driveway
I would love a bay window in the living room or a really wide hallway (for the Xmas tree 😳 )
Close to nice walks/bike rides (as in, can go walking/cycling from the door)

Other than that, fairly similar to what I have. Bit of character, old property, 3 bed.

maudesvagina · 11/10/2022 15:30

Upstairs laundry with balcony for drying clothes so no washing downstairs ever
