Hi, I have a lump on the front of my neck its growing bigger (seen doctor/ had TSH-normal/ENT & ultrasound booked). I really do not want to google because I have HA. Everyone I know, don't have Thyroid problems and have no advice. I am obviously thinking the worst now.

Forgot to add the doctor specialist said i had nodules on my thyroid no idea what that means.

I had this about 10 years ago. A fine needle biopsy was done on the lump (this wasn't painful) - the biopsy wasn't conclusive as to whether the lump was benign or cancerous so the surgeon advised a hemi-thyroidectomy. That is usually done as day surgery, I had to stay the night as anaesthetic made me a bit sick.

Recovery from the surgery was straightforward and no problems since :)

Thank you Strawberrie, did you have any thyroid problems before that? The doctors have worried me because they said they need to find out why It's growing with normal TSH results. Mine feels like I can not breath when I lay down, did you have this?.

No - it didn't cause me any problems other than you could see the growth/swelling

BungledBundle · 09/10/2022 11:30

I had exactly the same as Strawberrie. After the ultrasound and biopsy, they grade it and anything above a certain number they operate. Straightforward op (tho I was very nervous), I can't remember any pain at all and I had an amazing (nhs) surgeon and got the neatest scar anyone had ever seen.

Bordernotboarder · 09/10/2022 11:35

Also had this. Ultrasound nodule looked normal - was given a 1 percent chance of it being cancer and choice of monitoring or removal. I had half thyroid removed and on testing, it was just a nodule. No problems since. Have a neat but wide scar. Consultant said thyroid nodules are v common.

That has made me feel a bit better knowing that thank you.

Hi BungledBundle, did you have the biopsy straight after ultrasound? I am worried they are going to make me wait another few weeks. How long did you have to wait for your surgery?. Sorry for asking loads of questions.

Thank you for replying Border, I think I will need surgery (terrified) as I have trouble breathing it feels very prominent around thyroid little more on the left. I don't even know how long it has been growing for, the specialist said I have "some nodules" not sure if that is common having a few?.

I have multiple thyroid nodules but a normal functioning thyroid. My Consultant thought at some point I had thyroiditis which had caused the nodules. I have had a biopsy following a separate ultrasound which came back as an insufficient sample about a year ago and when I went back to have it done again they decided to wait and see, so I have just been referred to ENT so they can decide whether to do another or leave it. It was a simple procedure and whilst unpleasant due to where it is, it wasn’t particularly painful.

Hi mumof1879, thank you. Do you think you will end up having it removed by surgery?. Do yours cause and symptoms or discomfort?.

Hi OP, yes it was the same appointment done by the same person. He must've been a radiologist as straight after he said nothing looked worrying which was v reassuring then when the grade came back, they definitely positioned it as very likely to be nothing but they do operate to be sure.

The biopsy was a bit unpleasant but bearable. They said they could give me local but the sting of the local would've been similar to the biopsy discomfort.

Honestly, I was VERY nervous about the op - just the thought of someone cutting my neck - but it was absolutely fine. I was v tired for a week or so afterwards tho.

From memory I found the lump end Jan, Must've gone to gp the next few days, biopsy within a month I think, I may have had an ENT appt first or poss that was after the biopsy(?) then appt with surgeon and then the op was early April.

gnilliwdog · 09/10/2022 23:07

I have also a lump on the front of my neck. Was sent for an ultrasound. The man who did it was very fast and seemed irritable. He just said it looked like normal tissue and bodies change as we get older. That was 6 months ago, and I feel the lump may be spreading. Sorry to derail, but should I be insisting my GP refer me for a biopsy?

I had the same as strawberrie last year, had mine removed ( was urgently referred because they thought mine was cancer, was benign in the end). I had an overnight stay too, now on thyroxine for life, absolutely no problems since x

Absolutely push for a referral, the biopsy is a simple and quick procedure even if it's just to put your mind at rest x

Silvercurtains · 09/10/2022 23:28

I’ve had this. A lump/swelling appeared on my thyroid when I was going through an extremely stressful time in my life five years ago. I got a biopsy and it was benign. It’s still there but has never grown or affected me since. Good luck with your tests.

gnilliwdog · 09/10/2022 23:28

@winterspiceandallthingsnice Thank you, I'll pursue it.

Hi BungledBundle, what a massive relief for you finding out straight away. I really hope this is the case for me too. This is my thoughts too, cutting my neck (im very squeamish and hate blood). That’s pretty quick, I think once I know after the results I will fee better knowing what’s going on. Thank you so much.

Hi silvercurtains, thank you I think this is how mine came about years but couldn’t feel or see it until I recently. After my daughter was born and I think it was that thyroid virus, luckily mine will also be benign too 🤞🏼. Thank you and I’m glad you’re okay.

Hi gnilliwdog, I would not be happy with that. It really angers me as they would know we would be feeling anxious having scans/ tests. Make sure you book that appointment and say that you feel like it’s getting bigger.

My gp wasn’t even going to refer me at first she wanted to see what my TSH came back as if it was clear, it’s only because I wouldn’t take no for answer and went to a different doctor and got an urgent referral (he said hospital would refuse it as urgent). I’m just wondering how many women they do this too!

please book and let us know- good luck.

I had mine scanned, do have a nodule and thyroid is very lumpy from thyroiditis (have underactive thyroid) Didn't need a biopsy or any further monitoring though.

I had a total thyroidectomy last year after 15 years of having slowly growing nodules (aka lumps) on my thyroid plus my thyroid was out of whack and making me feel poorly

Sadly I had to pay £7000 to get this done privately as the nhs is now in the toilet . But I feel like a new woman now

Most thyroid nodules are harmless and they're very common. Often they're so small people can't feel them so don't notice them. They're also way more common in women

I am sure yours will be benign - however it is good it's being checked.

Hugs x

No problem i think I’ve had lots of problems with my thyroid over the years but some doctors are a bit clueless. I did get a private thyroid test it’s about £65 online (the doctors won’t do the full one or take notice of your results but it gives you a peace of mind). I don’t really know much about thyroids but there is a lot of women on here that do. Don’t google.
