How much water do you drink per day?

My water intake is shocking. I rarely drink more than 250ml a day, unless I have a cup of tea. I know I need to change but I find it hard drinking water just for the sake of it. If I am thirsty, I reach for the Diet Coke. And guess what, I am thirsty again. Also, I hate tap water too. Maybe you think I am being fussy, but it genuinely does not taste nice in my opinion.

How much water do you drink? If you have gone from 0 to 2 litres - how did you do it? Did you see any noticeable impact in your general health, everyday life etc?

I tried to up my intake and felt sick. I drink a very large glass in the morning, then the rest is in tea during the day.

BamBamBilla · 08/10/2022 22:05

My water bottle is 750ml so at least 1 of those a day plus 4 or 5 cups of tea.

FlorettaB · 08/10/2022 22:06

About 3 litres. I’ve always needed a lot of liquid, even as a child.

MrsJBaptiste · 08/10/2022 22:07

Most days I drink 2.5 litres of water a day and 6 cups of tea/coffee.

bloodywhitecat · 08/10/2022 22:08

As just water? Very small intake. As tea or squash? Quite a lot, my fluid intake is probably around 1.5 - 2l a day.

SirenSays · 08/10/2022 22:08

I drink a lot during a day - Juice, sparkling water, smoothies, milkshakes..but never plain water. I can't stand the stuff, it genuinely makes me feel more thirsty.

PollyCreo · 08/10/2022 22:09

I drink a big glass in the morning (force myself) plus another litre during the day and more during my gym work out.

I do get headachey if I don't drink enough during the summer months but I live in a very hot country.

AtomicBlondeRose · 08/10/2022 22:10

I drink loads! It’s not for any particular reason, I just feel like I get a dry mouth and get a bit panicky if I don’t have a water bottle. In other words I made an effort to up my water intake and got psychologically attached to it! I probably drink more than 2 litres a day. It’s easy to do - I have a metal bottle I fill at least twice during the day, so that’s nice and cold and inviting. Then every time I get a hot or alcoholic drink I also get a glass of water. I actually can’t drink a coffee without a glass of water alongside it now (common in Europe so at least I feel cosmopolitan). My DP always asks for a jug of tap water on the table when we go out to eat so I picked up the habit then and now I’m hooked. I don’t drink any other soft drinks really. Health wise I don’t think it makes any difference though.

nbee84 · 08/10/2022 22:11

About 2.5 - 3 litres, mostly squash and 1 can of pepsi max a day. I usually do around 40 - 60 mins of cardio exercise a day so try to make sure I drink plenty.

MonkeyPuddle · 08/10/2022 22:11

Quite a bit. Big glass in the morning with a coffee for breakfast, 2 mid morning and at lunchtime. So that’s probably 1L of water plus two coffees. I like tap water really cold, I use those reusable ice cubes.
I usually load my fluid intake before 2pm as I’m out the house for work every evening without reliable toilet facilities.

HundredMilesAnHour · 08/10/2022 22:12

I drink a minimum of 2.5 litres of filtered tap water every day. More if I exercise a lot. Any other drinks (usually 1 coffee) are in addition. I don't love the taste of water (used to hate it) but it's important to stay hydrated.

Greenbks · 08/10/2022 22:12

Oh wow! That is very little water. I drink a minimum of half a gallon a day- around 2.3litres. I also drink decaf coffee or tea so that is pretty much more water.

I find it to be very beneficial for myself. I’ll list some, my skin is amazing, flushes toxins out, can keep hunger at bay, more energetic, rarely get headaches etc. these are some of the benefits I recognise in myself.

i don’t understand how you can’t stomach the taste of water as I love it myself but accept that not everyone does- we all have different tastes!

have you tried decaff teas, flavoured water, ribena etc? There is an amazing flavoured water from M&S/ Sainsburys etc. lemon and lime and it’s fizzy.

I wouldn’t go from 250ml to 2litres as that’s a huge shock to your system, not to mention the toilet runs! Perhaps try to go in 150ml each week - buying bottle which measures the intake or set yourself a target of x amount of decaf teas, glasses of water say for example, 3 glasses of water and 1 cup of tea might make it easier.

it really is a habit you have to instill in yourself and I can’t live without it now!

DSGR · 08/10/2022 22:12

Litres of fluid but not plain water really. I drink squash and lots of tea, coffee and herbal tea

HighlandPony · 08/10/2022 22:13

Big 2ltr bottle of fizzy water plus a million teas and coffees. It’s eating I’m bad with. Unless there’s another adult to eat with (which is 3 days out of ten) I just exist on toast and cheese and fruit and help myself to jars of pickled stuff. If I feel hungry I’ll go stick some toast on, boil the kettle and eat pickled onions or gherkins or beetroot or scoops of coleslaw etc till it pops then I’ll have toast and tea or coffee.

Jellykat · 08/10/2022 22:15

I try hard daily! Take a bottle of water to work everyday, and bring it home more or less in tact.. I do drink a lot of tea though, but im sure its not as good for you.

Simonjt · 08/10/2022 22:15

I generally do the 1 litre for every 25kg rule, so I tend to drink four a day, with the majority being drank by about 3/4pm.

Sausagedognamedmash · 08/10/2022 22:15

I used to rarely drink water. In my office we all decided to make a conscious effort to drink more water and all bought the 2.3l hydrojugs. So Monday to Friday I drink one of those a day and a couple of coffees, a can of diet coke in the evening. Weekends on the other hand my intake drops off without the competition of everyone in the office asking how much is left in your jug.

Goldmember · 08/10/2022 22:17

2/3 sports directs mugs of tea and 1lt bottle of water a day.

KILM · 08/10/2022 22:55

So i have been a dehydrated person my whole life. I originally started drinking loads because a friend told me it helped with weightloss. Cant comment on the validity of that, but the other benefits i've found now mean im one of those annoying water bottle people.

How did i start -

  • Im not a 'refill' person, i just forget, so i found a 1litre water bottle (Typo do nice ones) and made that my goal which probably seems bonkers low to some people but i find it so hard and am v proud getting to a litre!
  • On water bottles - i like the ones with built in straws and found im much more likely to use it with a built in straw, however you might prefer a regular bottle - sounds strange but try different things! If you like it cold then maybe see if you can get a cheap metal/insulated one
  • I find if you arent keen on water keeping it cool helps, or if you need something to take away the tap water taste (are you hard or soft water etc, could a water filter help) supermarkets do cold brew tea bag fruit things - not like flavoured green teas, more like a very light squash? Twinings Cold Brew Infusions - or put some sugar free squash in it tbh, its not ideal but the benefits of being hydrated far outweigh the sugar

Benefits (and i sort of knew water was meant to be good for these but i didnt realise HOW good until a couple of months into drinking water i stopped for a week and all the old complaints started kicking off)

  • Skin improved massively - i am prone to breakouts and very dull/ill looking skin, its so much better now and i rarely get a spot. Its also less oily/dry and makeup sits on it nicer.
  • Sleep - i wouldnt have considered myself a bad sleeper but definitely noticed the quality of sleep is better? I wake up feeling more ready to be awake if that makes sense.
  • Digestion - again i wouldnt have considered myself as having digestive problems but... in hindsight my digestion was definitely sluggish
Catonamountain · 08/10/2022 22:59

Right, I'm going to TRY and drink more water! I've had zero today. Lots of cups of tea, hot chocolate, a protein shake after running so lots of milk but no actual water on its own.

Snugglemonkey · 08/10/2022 23:00

I dislike plain water. I drink about a litre of sparkling water and 2 or 3 of weak squash a day though. I also have a fair few cups of green or peppermint tea.

MotherOfPuffling · 08/10/2022 23:06

Stopped drinking plain water after I moved to London, as the tap water here tastes awful! Pre DD was drinking a couple of litres a day, but warm with lemon juice. Post DD came to rely on tea, managed to switch to non-caffeinated a couple of years ago and now drink at least 2L a day of that, with no sugar, but no actual plain water. On the other hand, other than an occasional smoothie or glass of fresh juice, that is all I drink (no squash, alcohol, or fizzy drinks), so I recon it all works out.

Weenurse · 08/10/2022 23:10

I think I may be seeing some of you in clinic for urinary frequency 😉.
One of my doctors suggests that if urine is the colour of lemons, (or lighter) then you are hydrated.
Personally, I used to struggle to drink water, I found having a 750 ml bottle on my desk was a visual reminder to drink. Between a coffee in the morning and other drinks throughout the day, I drink 1.5-2 litres.

ChagSameachDoreen · 08/10/2022 23:12

Probably about 8 pints
