How much water do you drink per day?

My water intake is shocking. I rarely drink more than 250ml a day, unless I have a cup of tea. I know I need to change but I find it hard drinking water just for the sake of it. If I am thirsty, I reach for the Diet Coke. And guess what, I am thirsty again. Also, I hate tap water too. Maybe you think I am being fussy, but it genuinely does not taste nice in my opinion.

How much water do you drink? If you have gone from 0 to 2 litres - how did you do it? Did you see any noticeable impact in your general health, everyday life etc?

I barely drink any. Two cups of tea and a cup of coffee per day usually, a glass of water with my evening meal and about half a pint of water before bed. I will drink water if I'm thirsty and drink as I run. My skin is clear, my digestion is good, I sleep well, I don't get headaches. It's a fallacy that you have to drink litres of water a day. Just something else for us to beat ourselves up about!

Fizbosshoes · 08/10/2022 23:13

It's not unusual for me to drink no water all day.
Tomorrow I'm doing a 10k race so I will probably have a cup of water at the end.Blush

Right, I'm going to TRY and drink more water! I've had zero today. Lots of cups of tea, hot chocolate, a protein shake after running so lots of milk but no actual water on its own.

There's water in all those things, I wouldn't worry about it, there's nothing magic about drinking it neat!

PortalooSunset · 08/10/2022 23:26

I've filled my 750ml bottle 3 times today, plus had 2 cups of coffee, 2 pints of (v dilute) squash and a can of Dr Pepper.
If I don't drink loads I get really tetchy. And constipated.

PortalooSunset · 08/10/2022 23:28

My urologist says 2-3 litres of any fluid is fine btw, doesn't have to be plain water but best if it's not solely coffee abd/or wine!

PeloFondo · 08/10/2022 23:28

Litres but not always plain water
6 mugs of tea
A litre of weak squash
Maybe 1.5l plain water when I exercise daily

MissingNashville · 08/10/2022 23:33

About 2 litres of water but I do lots of running and sport. Then tea, OJ and oatmilk.

2ManyPjs · 08/10/2022 23:36

Around 2.5 to 3L a day but only because a lot of it is through drinking diluting juice, usually very weak Ribena. Think I'd struggle if it was just water

uncomfortablydumb53 · 08/10/2022 23:49

I drink 2 750ml bottles of dilute Vimto
3 pints of Coffee
Can of Coke Zero
Recently increased my water intake and my skin is much better

thaegumathteth · 08/10/2022 23:49

About 500-750ml a day but I am desperately trying to increase that as I keep getting UTIs

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 09/10/2022 00:00

Never tap water.
Occasionally a small 250ml.bottle

I drink tea, coke, squash, so obviously water in that

We always have min 2 cases of the 40 costco water in shed and in thw drinks fridge there's always bottles but its just not my thing!

Verytirednow · 09/10/2022 00:07

I only ever drink water when thirsty …find drinking a real chore !! Ironically I spend my day encouraging our residents to drink 🤷‍♀️

PinkButtercups · 09/10/2022 00:20

I try to have 2L but I'm really bad at it.

I do have squash and tea etc. Has to be bottled water. Tap water is absolutely grim here.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 09/10/2022 05:12

I've drunk at least 2l per day since my late teens, after going on a health kick and getting into the habit. Then last year, I got a temporary job as a cleaner - I was working 12hrs per day in a warm environment, and went up to drinking 5l per day.

I ended up in hospital with hyponatremia; the consultant said I'd washed out every vitamin, mineral and electrolyte I was taking in by drinking so much. I was incredibly ill, and verging on kidney failure. It took me six weeks to stop shaking and eight weeks to walk normally again.

It was very, very scary. I was put on a renal diet and liquid intake was restricted to 1l per day for a while, which was awful. I now try to not go over 3l per day unless I'm exercising, because that whole experience was awful.

Out of interest, did you drink so much because you were thirsty, or because you thought you had to with the increased work?
I also counsel patients not to drink too much for this reason

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 09/10/2022 06:22

A minimum of two litres. I drink from an (empty) glass jar that originally contained honey. It’s around half a litre of water.

When I wake up, I drink a jar of water that I mix the night before - it’s a huge water containing ginger, turmeric, lemon, honey and black pepper. Make it each night with hot water and put in the fridge, make myself down it in the morning before I have my 2 coffees!

I’m a teacher so suffer some voice and throat problems sometimes from talking all day and water really helps that. So I make myself drink at least 2 jars of water (1 litre) before lunch and at least two after lunch (another 1 litre). Often I drink more.

Before bed I drink 1 mug of warm water, garlic and 1teaspoon honey for the health benefits.

You just need to get into a routine (and get a bloody big glass/jar!).

Imissmoominmama · 09/10/2022 06:25

About 1.5 litres of filtered water, and probably 5-6 mugs of weak decaf coffee.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 09/10/2022 06:29

@Weenurse it was the increased workload, plus I have a history of awful UTIs, and I wasn't long getting over one. I almost had a fear of not being properly hydrated.

I did manage to crack a smile when the consultant was telling me off, though; I'm a recovering alcoholic, and I told him it was a real novelty to be told off by a doctor for drinking too much of something that WASN'T alcohol!

mrssunshinexxx · 09/10/2022 06:33

Min 2 l try for 3 to be honest I just down it I. Intervals when I'm near the sink

So i have been a dehydrated person my whole life. I originally started drinking loads because a friend told me it helped with weightloss. Cant comment on the validity of that, but the other benefits i've found now mean im one of those annoying water bottle people.

How did i start -

  • Im not a 'refill' person, i just forget, so i found a 1litre water bottle (Typo do nice ones) and made that my goal which probably seems bonkers low to some people but i find it so hard and am v proud getting to a litre!
  • On water bottles - i like the ones with built in straws and found im much more likely to use it with a built in straw, however you might prefer a regular bottle - sounds strange but try different things! If you like it cold then maybe see if you can get a cheap metal/insulated one
  • I find if you arent keen on water keeping it cool helps, or if you need something to take away the tap water taste (are you hard or soft water etc, could a water filter help) supermarkets do cold brew tea bag fruit things - not like flavoured green teas, more like a very light squash? Twinings Cold Brew Infusions - or put some sugar free squash in it tbh, its not ideal but the benefits of being hydrated far outweigh the sugar

Benefits (and i sort of knew water was meant to be good for these but i didnt realise HOW good until a couple of months into drinking water i stopped for a week and all the old complaints started kicking off)

  • Skin improved massively - i am prone to breakouts and very dull/ill looking skin, its so much better now and i rarely get a spot. Its also less oily/dry and makeup sits on it nicer.
  • Sleep - i wouldnt have considered myself a bad sleeper but definitely noticed the quality of sleep is better? I wake up feeling more ready to be awake if that makes sense.
  • Digestion - again i wouldnt have considered myself as having digestive problems but... in hindsight my digestion was definitely sluggish

We have the Typo bottles too, I also like that one with the straw as they last well, unlike some other brands. I have the 1l bottle as it fits into the bottle holder of my car door but we have a good collection of the 1.5l ones.

My dd is like you, dehydrates very fast. She carts around one of those 2 5l bottles that has the handle. She drinks about 6l-7l a day easily . We tried to cut her back on advice from a dietician, she ended up on a drip after an event (she is sporty so is very active).

I drink about 2-3l in the summer, admittedly not so much in winter. I have an ice machine so iced water in a bottle really is welcome in the heat. Winter I try, but it shows in my skin when I'm having less.

I really think that everyone is different. Some people need way more than 2l a day, and others are OK on less than that.

Filleto · 09/10/2022 06:53

Not much as pure water as when I had hg in pregnancy I completely went off cold drinks and haven’t regained the habit. I am hydrated though.
I generally have 2x 400ml tea
1 350ml coffee
2x 350ml herbal or decaf tea (sometimes 3)
1x 600ml herbal tea. Sometimes I have a glass or two of water as well but only if I feel thirsty in between all my hot drinks!

MysweetAudrina · 09/10/2022 07:05

Tend to always have a chilly bottle to hand and drink from it all day. Might also have 1 cup of tea and 1 can of Coke Zero. But I love cold water so it tends to be my main drink.

DCINightingale · 09/10/2022 07:15

I have a big SIGG bottle, I think its 1.5 litres. I get through almost 2 of those of water most days, plus 3 coffees. sigg bottles are great, and can hold carbonated drinks. Expensive but they really last (my DHs is at least 20 years old). I feel rotten if I dont drink enough, I feel like it affects me more the following day.

Perfectlystill · 09/10/2022 07:19

Get a big 2L bottle and say I have to finish this every day.

It quickly becomes a habit.

Titsywoo · 09/10/2022 10:53

I drink a lot. I don't really like other drinks so all I have is water. Must be 3 litres a day approx.
