How are people warm enough with their houses at 18 degrees?

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 08/10/2022 20:16

My heating is set at 21, and I'm still cold!! But I keep reading on here that people have their heating set at 18.

I'm already wearing a jumper and fluffy socks. Sitting on the sofa with a blanket. I am OK with it at this temperature but feel that I should be trying to reduce it further.

Am I just a wuss?Grin

18 degrees outside isn’t considered even near cold so… why would it inside?

Forfukzsake · 08/10/2022 20:18

You are cold at 21 degrees? Are you sure your thermostat is working? It doesn't sound like it is 21 degrees.

sittingonacornflake · 08/10/2022 20:18

My house is 18 and the heating hasn't been on for a few days. In fact it's been so warm and sunny here the last few days I've had all windows and doors open between 10-3.

I must run warm because I'm really warm right now! I was under a blanket because I like to snuggle but I've had to kick it off as it's too warm. Might have to take my socks off next!

Weird huh!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/10/2022 20:19

DP has just informed me that our heating won’t click on unless it goes below 7.

Fucking 7!

I’m actually on board. I have plenty of warm clothes and boots and many blankets.

DS doesn’t feel the cold. He’s fine.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/10/2022 20:19

I’m freezing at 18. Even with vests, socks and blankets etc.

FanGurlll · 08/10/2022 20:19

Our thermostat is set to 18, it's miserable. It's ok if busy doing stuff, but sitting still I really feel it. I will be turning it up from time to time, but with more careful consideration than previously!

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 08/10/2022 20:20

Is there a chance you have circulation issues, low blood pressure or anaemia?

GettingStuffed · 08/10/2022 20:20

It's 20 inside today, really comfortable it went up a bit as dusk closed in as the sun goes down shining into the room.DH opened the patio doors. I'm not sure 2 degrees would make much difference. However we have an elderly person with dementia here so may need to keep it nearer 20 for her.

I think it's working, yes. I do generally feel the cold. I would wear a coat outside if it was 18 degrees outside!

I’m not going to say you’re a wuss because clearly people have different thresholds for what they consider cold - but you’re definitely on the more cold-sensitive side if you genuinely find 18 degrees too cold when appropriately dressed.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 08/10/2022 20:20

I am a cold person. Always have been. My hands and feet are continually cold year round. I'm the kind of person who has the heating on as needed year round. We don't turn it off for summer.
I can afford what they want me to pay (£450) but do I want to pay that? No absolutely not. So... I've bought some room thermometers to do some testing with. I've discovered that I can manage to about 18.4 before I really feel it. If I'm moving around I'm okay at 18. It hasn't been lower than that yet so I don't know how cold I can go when I'm active in the house.
It is 18.5 now and I've gone upstairs and put my pjs, bedsocks and big dressing gown on. I've put the heating on as I know I'll be sedentary now for a few hours. I also want to get some washing dried ready for the morning. Ill only have the heating on for an hour in the living room. It will be enough. I haven't needed it on for more than an hour. It's been on twice this week.
I've surprised myself by how I've managed to be honest. I didn't think I would.

PrincessButtercupToo · 08/10/2022 20:21

We’ve not had our heating on yet, the house is currently 21 degrees throughout (five story townhouse in London) and I’m wearing a T-shirt.

Of course, everyone’s got a different temperature that they are comfortable at, so what’s fine for me can of course feel very cold for you.

I’m a very “slight” build, but pretty much never sit still.

We havent put our heating on yet as its been 19 here during the day and really sunny.
Ive been busy, out and about ,pool, sauna, shopping.
I rarely sit before early evening.
I think if you sit it does feel colder.
Ive got fluffy socks and a hot water bottle.

I love your use name 😍

paintitallover · 08/10/2022 20:21

I'm only just warm at 21 degrees.I use a throw as well sometimes.

I am anaemic, yes - have seen my GP about this. Is that likely to be what's making me feel the cold so much?

Our house has been between 18 and 19 degrees today and we have been fine in jumpers. We have young twins though so we don’t get to sit down for long periods.

hangryorhungry · 08/10/2022 20:21

Same.. ours is set at 21 & still feels a bit chilly. The rooms are big, we have UF heating so wonder if that makes a difference?! 18 is what we set temp at for overnight..?! How much extra on a bill does a degree or two add I wonder..

Where do you live? Our house in London would never get as low as seven while it’s occupied even if we never turned the heating on.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 08/10/2022 20:22

You would wear a coat at 18 degrees? You must definitely feel the cold more than others.

Badger1970 · 08/10/2022 20:23

We live in a ridiculously drafty 80s build and are rural so we bulk buy LPG. Our thermostat barely ever reaches 18 over the winter so that to us is very warm. We've had some people out and have got thick insulation in the loft, cavity wall insulation, triple glazing and we're still fecking cold most of the time.

Hotandbothereds · 08/10/2022 20:23

I’ve not had the heating on yet, the thermostat is showing its 16 in here right now & I’m fine, I’ve got a jumper and warm socks on and a blanket on the sofa which is quite cozy.

RIPWalter · 08/10/2022 20:25

I'd be happy with the house at 16C and a warm blanket (heated throw) for when I'm sitting still for long periods. However our home is an old stone cottage and needs to be kept warm to stop the worst of the damp, so we tend to aim for 18-19 in winter (at the moment it just depends on the outside temp as we haven't switched the heating on yet, but generally around 17).

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/10/2022 20:25

ive always been cold. In my youth l wore a lot of black and bright red lipstick. I always found a spot next to the radiator at work. I was always cold.

My nickname was Morticia, or sometimes The Corpse😁
