How are people warm enough with their houses at 18 degrees?

My heating is set at 21, and I'm still cold!! But I keep reading on here that people have their heating set at 18.

I'm already wearing a jumper and fluffy socks. Sitting on the sofa with a blanket. I am OK with it at this temperature but feel that I should be trying to reduce it further.

Am I just a wuss?Grin

Are you trying to bump your iron up, because that would probably help.

But generally, different people have different tolerances. House is about 17. Im in jeans and jumper under a blanket. DS2 (11) is in PJ bottoms next to me. He is still sleeping under a 1.5 tog duvet..... I think he is the freak tho!

Yes, have been trying but it isn't really improving enough at the moment. Gp thinks it's due to ridiculously heavy periods (due to fibroids). She wanted to see if we could get it up with tablets first but it doesn't seem to be working so probably need to look at alternative solutions now.

Yes, I used to live in a hot country and we typically set the AC to around 26/27!

Bingo - therein lies your problem. I honestly think that even a few years of living in a hot climate changes our thermostat.

FivePotatoesHigh · 08/10/2022 20:38

Our heating is off and I’m really warm! I don’t really seem to feel the cold easily (don’t get if this means I ‘run hot’ or ‘run cold’, I get those confused).

StillNotWarm · 08/10/2022 20:38

Also, is your house damp? If you live somewhere wet, or dry lots of washing inside, or don't ventilate the house, you may find it feels colder. Dying the house out can help you feel warmer at the same temperature.
Another veteran of 26C AC here! I think the breeze from the circulating air helped.

I’ve not had the heating on yet, the thermostat is showing its 16 in here right now & I’m fine, I’ve got a jumper and warm socks on and a blanket on the sofa which is quite cozy.

I would be miserable at 16!!

We are a solid 4.5tog duvet family! When it gets too hot we swap it out for a quilt cover 🤣 my mum has a 13.5 😲

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 08/10/2022 20:38

My thermostat is showing 18. It’s not cold, I’m sat on sofa, joggers, a sweatshirt, bare feet. I have closed the patio doors this evening though. Upstairs my bedroom window is still open. I might put socks on if it drops to say 15.

Had a bad leak from the pipes recently, which we're still drying out. So that might not be helping.

I'm wearing t-shirt, hoodie, trackpants. It's currently 18 in my sitting room and I'm warm. DS is in t-shirt and shorts. Heating will be set to 16 when it's on and I'll have slippers and a blanket in the evenings at that temperature.

Yeah, you may be right.

I don't think I felt the cold as a child, but after moving to a warm climate, I have struggled to cope with the cold. My dad is the same - he lived in the warm for a few years when younger, and he hates the cold now, whereas my mum hates the heat.

I never really go above 18, the temperature where I live rarely goes above that in the summee so would feel weirdly wrong to be heating to hotter than outside. I have an oodie and thick wooly slippers but the best thing as others have mentioned was getting my iron up and also my vitamin d not sure if the vitamin d helped but I took both at same time

DP has just informed me that our heating won’t click on unless it goes below 7.

Fucking 7!

I’m actually on board. I have plenty of warm clothes and boots and many blankets.

DS doesn’t feel the cold. He’s fine.

I'm with your husband mine canny work the thermostat so has to suck it up 😂😂😂😂

I lived in a warmer climate and set the thermostat to 17 my first winter here. My house was much colder in the winter in the 'hot' climate as we had no heating.

AndTwoFilmsByFrancoisTruffaut · 08/10/2022 20:44

Live rurally in the South East in an old cottage. No heating on and bedroom thermometer says 17.6. We have the fan on all year round! DH and I run v hot, we’re like a pair of furnaces on legs. I love cold air, it makes me feel alive. About to give birth and dreading having to have the heating on for the baby!

NashvilleQueen · 08/10/2022 20:44

I really notice the difference between 16 and 15 (which I find a bit nippy) so I think that I am absolutely fine at 18

userxx · 08/10/2022 20:44

The cooler the better for me, can't stand being hot, thank you thyroid, I'll save a fortune this winter.

megletthesecond · 08/10/2022 20:45

No idea. Mine is 20° and I'm layered up and moving and still chilly. Mine is on 24/7 though, I can't sleep with cold air.

limitededitionbarbie · 08/10/2022 20:45

I've just put mine on tonight because my granddaughter is here and she's only 3. Put it on for an hour, closed all the windows so it was all warm for her. I've had to turn it off we are all too hot! We're on the northwest.

jjj23 · 08/10/2022 20:46

I'm the same!! Mine is also set at 21 - I'm wearing a hoody and under a blanket!!!

MushMonster · 08/10/2022 20:46

I am rapidly llosing my faith in humanity.
Cold at 18C!

limitededitionbarbie · 08/10/2022 20:46

It was set for 22 I think 18 to 29 would be fine for us.

Saying that though there are just days when you just can't get warm!

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 08/10/2022 20:47

Ours was set to go on at 18 and the other day it clicked on but felt far too warm.
So i lowered it to 14.
It says 17 now on thermostat, and im in just a t shirt pj type top but will add a gown later.
We did buy blankets for each bed / sofa too

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 08/10/2022 20:48

we are trying 18 this year. Usually between 19 and 20.5 so a big change for us.

Blankets and fuzzy socks have meant it is not too bad so far.

AutumnalCosyness · 08/10/2022 20:48

I put my heating on for an hour earlier and felt boiling so turned it off 🤷‍♀️

GottaGetOutofDairy · 08/10/2022 20:50

Everyone's different but I'm fairly sure it's my extra stone of weight keeping me warm Blush
