How are people warm enough with their houses at 18 degrees?

My heating is set at 21, and I'm still cold!! But I keep reading on here that people have their heating set at 18.

I'm already wearing a jumper and fluffy socks. Sitting on the sofa with a blanket. I am OK with it at this temperature but feel that I should be trying to reduce it further.

Am I just a wuss?Grin

I am ok with 16 here. I have an Oody on. Sometimes I get too hot!

Ok the temp on your heating doesn’t mean that’d what your room is at, especially if it’s an open plan room. It takes a while for a house to reach the temp on the heating, if I was you I’d buy some room thermometers from Amazon. I’d guess your home might be lower than you think

The temperature setting on your thermostat doesn't necessarily reflect the temperature you are experiencing. Use a thermometer and check the temperature in different rooms.

You should be warm enough at 18 if that is what temperature your room is at and you are wearing reasonable winter clothes.

I really really loathe people that don't dress for the weather and then complain.

My sister in-law is a prime example. Her uniform look is a denim skirt mid length with no tights, bare legs, with sandals. A low cut flimsy thin top, short sleeves and a very thin see through cardigan just barely covering her arms unbuttoned.

Literally whether it is 2c or 25c this is what she wears all year round. The first thing she says in the winter is oh I am cold I am cold, I can't stand it. Well adapt your outfit for the weather aargh. My poor brothers gas bill is astronomical. My nieces equally have just as inappropriate an outfit as their mother for year round wear.

She also still wears her uniform look when she attends weddings, funerals or any other type of social function and so does her daughters.

In contrast my next door neighbour wears thick black combat trousers, a thick black jumper, a black fleece body warmer, then a regatta anorak on top, all year round 2c to 25c literally the same outfit. It is like wow unbelievable!

Our house is currently 15.4 degrees. I'm always pottering about though so feel OK. I'm also wearing jeans, thick socks, hiking boots and a large thick polo neck jumper as I've been out walking the dog and will stay in these clothes.

I wont put the heating on tonight. We have throws for the sofa to settle in when we relax this evening. The teenagers complain but I ignore them 😁

Similar here. I don't have central heating so no thermostat but I have a thermometer to check the temperature.

The room I work from home in has been sitting at around 15c the last week or so. It feels pretty cold but manageable with plenty of hot drinks and a occasional hot water bottle, that's sitting still, if I was doing housework it would feel more comfortable.

I wear thermal leggings, heat holder socks, slippers, a long sleeved top, and a thick slightly oversized fleece or hoody.

You adjust, I now find my parents house and my office too hot.

I start to feel the cold around 13 - I turn it up to around 17/18 for an hour then off again. I could probably cope with it around 12/13 but I have two dogs who feel the cold so I turn it on for them.

WhatTeaspoon · 22/11/2022 23:44

Ours is set at 19 for when it comes on for an hour in the morning and the evening for a couple of hours. Today in the day it got as low as 16 and I did feel chilly but as it was me I just moved around for a bit.

ShirleyHolmes · 23/11/2022 12:57

I am a freezer but keep heating under 18. It's been on a coupe of times this year, and we only ever run it between about 4 and 7 and then use the residual heat until bed. (Apart form the Christmas holidays when we laze around)

However, to keep warm i am currently wearing - thick joggers, thermal vest, long sleeve top, jumper, below bum fleece, long thick dressing gown with hood up as needed, socks, sheepskin slippers! Wear thermal vest, nightie and fleece ankle length second nightie thing in bed! Will add thermal leggings and wrist warmers in colder weather, plus sometimes 2 blankets, one for arms, back and shoulders and one for lower body! So I'm fine! 😂

CaptainBarbosa · 27/11/2022 15:39

Ours is set to 16.

I'll be honest, you just sorta get used to feeling cold 🤷🏻‍♀️ I sit with blankets but dread needing to get up to do something because the cold "sets in".

I think I've now just gotten used to the permeant cold toes feeling 😂

Op I'm the same as you. Mines is 21 too but there some logic behind 21 in the cold not being the same as 21 in the Summer.

What is the logic? I’ve always wondered about this.

Gizlotsmum · 27/11/2022 17:01

We have ours set to 18 during the day, it’s a bit on the cold side if not moving much, have just put the log burner on as is a misty miserable evening which always makes me feel cold. I find as long as my feet and head are warm I’m ok. I am naturally a cold person ( can feel cold in shade at 21 degrees) however in the sun I am fine at lower temperatures. Might be worth wearing something on your head, see if that makes a difference. If you genuinely are miserable I would consider making it warmer ( could you use a hot water bottle?)

21 from CH feels very different to me compared with 21 in summer, stuffy and warm like I need fresh air. I am in normal winter clothing such as a jumper and thick socks too.

I’m not going to say you’re a wuss because clearly people have different thresholds for what they consider cold - but you’re definitely on the more cold-sensitive side if you genuinely find 18 degrees too cold when appropriately dressed.

I agree. I am happy at 16 - 18 most of the winter, and actually don't have the heating on most of the time anyway (and never have, so this is not an energy cost thing for me). My best friend is freezing at 21. At 21 I am stripping off clothes. Perversely, in terms of climate, whilst I am fine with colder weather I am an absolute sun worshipper and it can never, ever, be too hot for me. Whilst my friend heads for the shade / air con the minute it gets warmer. Go figure....
