47 and still undecided if beetroot is great or terrible.

Keep ordering it and putting it in salads thinking ‘yeah, this salad and ergo my life will be better with some soft purple stuff in it’ and then I eat it and I’m slightly unnerved by both the flavour and texture.

Does beetroot ever get better?

It’s disgusting but good for you. So I force some down then reward myself with a glass of wine.

YogaLite · 10/10/2022 15:29

My friend calls the beetroot borscht a vampire soup - very timely in the run up to Halloween 🎃

Madcats · 10/10/2022 15:33

@Tabbouleh ooh could I have a South Asian beetroot curry recipe (or two or 3) that turn out nice.

I just tend to shove it in cakes or roast it with root veg and lots of garlic and thyme.

I absolutely love it! In fact, I had a cheese, beetroot and salad cream sandwich for lunch

Shikamiri · 10/10/2022 16:23

My son used to be so pleased to have a pink wee after having beetroot 😁

Shikamiri · 10/10/2022 16:24

This was when he was still using a potty, I must add!

ancientgran · 10/10/2022 16:30

I'm 69 and I'm very firmly of the opinion that it is vile.

TroysMammy · 10/10/2022 16:31

I'm undecided too and I grow it but I give most to my neighbour as she likes it. I've got raw grated beetroot in the freezer for cakes, falafel and whatever else. I wonder how long it will be in there for?

icanbewhatiwant · 10/10/2022 16:35

I am glad others think it tastes of soil. Dh loves it. He grows it and cooks it. The house and fridge stink of beetroot and soil when he's been cooking it. I like it from the shop, pickled in jars. Dh has also tried pickling it and roasting it but I still taste soil 🤢

Hoppinggreen · 10/10/2022 17:10

I made a beetroot, chickpea and coconut curry yesterday.
It was amazing and incredibly easy

Livpool · 10/10/2022 17:28

I am 42 and can say confidently that it is awful! It tastes like dirt!

Sestriere · 10/10/2022 17:34

Food of the Gods. Love, love, love it. Especially with goats cheese and walnuts.

AlisonDonut · 10/10/2022 17:35

I grow it and love it.

I particularly like Chioggia and the golden varieties.

The Detroit and Dobbie's purple I usually roast, whilst the others I use in stir fries and salads.

Curlyshabtree · 10/10/2022 17:38

I make two great beetroot salads. One grated raw with apple and sultanas with a horseradish vinaigrette.
The other is roasted beetroot with rocket, crumbled feta and a balsamic dressing topped with toasted pumpkin seeds.

Oblomov22 · 10/10/2022 17:42

I like it. Like the sound of beetroot curry.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 10/10/2022 17:48

Vile - tastes of mud.

I wonder if there is a reason some people like the earthy taste and others really don’t.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/10/2022 18:19

Try cooking it at home? I cut it into 1/4s or so depending on size; toss with evoo, salt, garlic powder and roast in the oven until tender.
I also make a pureed soup: boil cubes until soft with a half onion. Remove and carefully puree with blender adding a bit of cooking liquid, a bit of salt and dried thyme. Return to pot and add heavy cream until desired consistency and heat gently.

DarkNecessities · 10/10/2022 18:25

It’s good for you in every single
possible way.

However, don’t ever let it touch vinegar.

We roast it, serve in burgers and salads.

It also massively increases athletic performance

Madcats · 10/10/2022 20:47

To all the beetroot haters (fair enough, but wrong), do you also hate the taste of Brussel sprouts? What about coriander/cilantro?

I am pretty sure the scientists identified taste buds are influenced by a couple of genes.

limitededitionbarbie · 10/10/2022 20:54

Tabbouleh · 08/10/2022 08:23

Yes. In Asian recipes. Curries and raitas. I make a coconut beetroot curry.

I love beetroot would you mind sharing your recipe please

I love beetroot and I love fresh coriander
That's very interesting what you have said

limitededitionbarbie · 10/10/2022 20:56

And I love sprouts

user1471538283 · 10/10/2022 21:42

I love beetroot especially if its freshly boiled or roasted. It is lovely on it's own or with cheese.

My DF used to boil a big pot of fresh beetroot and we would eat it with salt. The whole pot.

Jewelanemone · 10/10/2022 21:52

Tesco Finest Sweet and Fiery Beetroot. I eat them straight from the packet. Absolutely delicious.

Cazziebo · 10/10/2022 21:56

Beetroot was my pregnancy craving and only stopped when I realised I might have a purple baby....

The craving has remained and I'll always go for beetroot dishes on a menu (although it's often served with goat's cheese which I hate!) . Love beetroot in any form.
