Anyone been to Krakow?

Colourmehappy26 · 07/10/2022 21:01

I’m going to Krakow next week, has anyone been and have any good recommendations for places to go or restaurants to eat?

I keep coming across lots of very touristy restaurants online which I’m trying to avoid!

Just me and DP, no DC.

Thanks Smile

Not yet, hopefully in February so watching with interest!

You can't not do the Auschwitz and Berkinau (sp) trips. Incredibly humbling
The salt mines are apparently amazing - we didn't do them when we went as budget was tight.

Lots of restaurants round the main square.

If I remeber rightly, there's a little kebab shop next to an Irish bar which does incredible kebabs. But possible we just had too many drinks at the Irish bar so anything would be good.

Oblomov22 · 07/10/2022 22:48

We went to momento resto.
Wd also went to art [email protected]. Fabulous.

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 07/10/2022 22:54

Definitely visit the salt mines

collywobble · 07/10/2022 23:05

Krakow is wonderful . We visited a restaurant just off the centre called Diana which had the best food and the prices were great. Trip to Aushwitz is very humbling and an absolute must and the Schindler museum for more insight .

Shortkiwi · 07/10/2022 23:05

Went in early June and absolutely loved it, would return. We stayed in the Jewish quarter and there were a good few restaurants in the square there that were good, Hamsa and Restaurant Baster included.

EachandEveryone · 07/10/2022 23:06

Theres a fab jazz bar on the square in a basement www.myguidekrakow.com/nightlife/harris-piano-jazz-bar it feels like old New York.

Goinglala22 · 07/10/2022 23:07

Hope to go next year so following for tips

londonmummy1966 · 07/10/2022 23:11

DC went on a choir tour and sang in the chapel in the salt mines - they said they were absolutely amazing.

TravellingSpoon · 07/10/2022 23:31

Yes to the Salt Mines. Wear comfy shoes as its a lot of walking.

Livinginanotherworld · 07/10/2022 23:34

Don’t miss the salt mines, they are amazing.

NancyDrooo · 07/10/2022 23:36

Salt Mines
Lost Souls Alley (if you dare)
Piano bar in main square

Hohofortherobbers · 07/10/2022 23:55

Krakow was incredible. Yes, go to the salt mines, go to oskar schindlers factory which is a very respectful museum to Oskars Jews and the invasion of Kraków, walk around the Walwal castle and see the fire breathing dragon. Visit the gates of the city and look up the legend of the bugeler who plays from the tower. Drink Tyskie beer, eat perogie and beef slips and incredible Beetroot. Pay for a guided tour of auschwitz and birkenau because you must hear this history from a professional, it is overwhelming.

Pegsmum · 07/10/2022 23:59

Krakow is fabulous, there are some great restaurants in the Jewish quarter tho I can’t remember any names sorry! Every restaurant I ate in was great and the people are so welcoming.

mumoffloofs · 08/10/2022 00:11

Yes to Salt Mines and Jewish Quarter. Check out the cathedral in the main square, absolutely stunning. On one of the side streets you'll find a milk bar (I want to say it was called Tomasz), which serves incredible, traditional Polish food at very reasonable prices. Milk bars were part of the old Communist regime and subsidised by the state to ensure people were well fed etc. You must try pierogi at least once a day.

VeridicalVagabond · 08/10/2022 00:15

Watching as we're going in April and looking for some recommendations too. Friend of mine is out there now and says it's amazing!

talknomore · 08/10/2022 00:34

apart from the Salt Museum all others can be visited by foot so no need to worry about using public transport
from the airport take Uber to your hotel, Airbnb hosts often offer overpriced pickupa

Things worth visiting:
1/ Salt Museum in Wieliczka - take train from the main Train station then 5 min walk
2/ Schindler's Museum - my son watched the film on the way there
3/ Go to Mariacki Church and climb the tower for best view of Krakow
4/ Do the round walk in park called Planty to admire various buildings, churches and University
5/ There's also a museum under the main square showing medieval and pre medieval history of town
6/ Visit Smok Wawelski - the dragon next to the castle and visit the castle itself
7/ mnk.pl/exhibitions/lempicka - very good exhibition now on

Oh it's beautiful! Have a wonderful time. The places we went to dished out shots of house vodka for free with meals. A few years ago now. I have a 2YO also so city breaks are a distant dream Sad

Agree re Auschwitz, something I feel people must see to understand. A very sobering and moving experience.

@Colourmehappy26 Kazimierz is the old Jewish quarter where you staying and some places on my list are in that area

thereisonlyoneofme · 08/10/2022 09:46

Re the salt mines, you have to go down a LOT of steps so need to be good on your feet, you get to come up in a lift though.

The castle is lovely, and the main square I believe has shops underground.
