Anyone been to Krakow?

I’m going to Krakow next week, has anyone been and have any good recommendations for places to go or restaurants to eat?

I keep coming across lots of very touristy restaurants online which I’m trying to avoid!

Just me and DP, no DC.

Thanks Smile

We're just planning our next hol and she actually asked to go there. So I we're doing some research and having a think.

@woohoowoohoo my son is a young adult. He went to Shinglers Museum in Krakow and said it was very sad experience and he wasn't sure if it is suitable for a 14 yo. I would not take a teenager to Aushwitz. We had many opportunities to visit when we were in Poland and I decided against it.

Go out to the old communist quarter- it’s really interesting

Krakow is lovely generally, we found loads of places to just drop in on

@woohoowoohoo I took DS to Auschwitz when he was 14. He's a sensitive soul but he felt it really important to go. He's studying history at university now

I didn't do Auschwitz as I mentally couldn't take it. There's a really good folklore museum in one of the suburbs. I had the best ever mashed potato in Krakow in restaurant just up from the square. A warning of you've booked the castle, the wind really whips in off the river, wear warm clothes.

Think this is DD. She'll be 15 by the time we go and her history teacher has talked to them about it and said it was important to go if they could. She is emotional but doesn't get traumatised easily if you see what I mean (and we've had trauma together so I know this ). We shall see, plenty of time to think it over anyway , we are going to book for Krakow anyway it looks incredible so thanks OP for the thread!

I’ve been to krakow three times now and going again next year. I haven’t been to the camps , and I don’t Intend to go. Ditto my DD who is now an adult and been twice.

Been to a lot of the museums though, and really enjoyed them.
Have a great time with your DD Op, and make sure you eat lots of Pierogi,

@Colourmehappy26 Looking forward to hearing all about it!

There is free walking tour in the Jewish quarter (you can donate at the end). It’s called Walkative I think, you’ll be able to find on trip advisor.

We had a really knowledgable guide who cared about the stories he was telling - and had photos and leads you through the experience of families who lived there and who were moved.

It seemed more real somehow than auschwitz as you learn about people’s lives before the occupation as well and see where life was normal - the children’s school for example, but then walk over the river to what became the Jewish ghetto and the square beside the train station where people were rounded up before being sent to the concentration camps on the train - we went the day before visiting auschwitz, I would definitely recommend the tour first or even as a stand alone.

This is a great thread for recommendations and ideas, I am hoping to book for this coming October.

I wondered how long to book for - would 5 days/4 nights be enough/too much?

Carpediem15 · 08/01/2023 20:11

Not too much. We went for a long week end and had to go back a few weeks later to see the things we had missed.

melonraspberry · 08/01/2023 22:41

I’ve just booked for 5 nights in August. Think it’s easy to fill 4 full days there
