Anyone been to Krakow?

I’m going to Krakow next week, has anyone been and have any good recommendations for places to go or restaurants to eat?

I keep coming across lots of very touristy restaurants online which I’m trying to avoid!

Just me and DP, no DC.

Thanks Smile

Kraków is my favourite place!

Morski Oko- traditional food and live music.

Bania Luka- ridiculously cheap drinks (£1-£2) and a huge selection. Also does 'bar snacks' for around £2. Good to stop off for a drink and a snack.

pijalnia wódki i piwa - similar to Bania Luka but I prefer BL.

Bars in Kazimierz (Jewish quarter) worth checking out- Singer, Absynt, Hamsa (also does Israeli food), Propaganda (tiny bar filled with socialist memorabilia).

Restaurants in Kazimierz- Warsztat is great for lunch, Hamsa, Sasiedzi.

I know there are a couple more I'm forgetting, I'll be back if I remember!

Re the salt mines, you have to go down a LOT of steps so need to be good on your feet, you get to come up in a lift though.

The castle is lovely, and the main square I believe has shops underground.

Thanks good tip!

You're definitely staying in the right place! Love Kazimierz.

StopGo · 08/10/2022 09:50

Polish chocolate is utterly amazing. Walk all the many steps to the castle, admire the dragon and then treat yourself to a hot chocolate in the Wawel cafe.

You can walk the calories off round the grounds afterwards.

Been several times and will go again. Our favourite city. Cant remember the names of places we ate but didnt have a bad meal anywhere tbh. Salt mines are amazing!

Pashazade · 08/10/2022 09:53

Great thread, hoping to go next year as DH goes to a regular conference there, saving this thread for future reference!

AuntieMarys · 08/10/2022 09:53

Pimiento is a good restaurant.
Lost souls alley if you want to freak yourself out.

WeAllFellIn · 08/10/2022 10:03

Lots of great recommendations already so I'll just add this one - amazing pierogi, bigos, goulash etc.

I've been mulling over where to go for a long weekend - now sold on Krakow!

Yay! I’ll come and feed back afterwards!

Are the restaurants generally fairly low key (apart from the few posher ones I’ve seen)? I’m mulling over what clothes to bring.. Hopefully the weather is going to be sunny/cloudy and no rain forecast at the moment!

There's a really old Jewish cemetery that's in the Jewish quarter and it was fascinating.

NippyWoowoo · 08/10/2022 10:28

What type of place are you staying in? Stayed in a self-catered apartment and the staff were excellent in recommending places.

I ate somewhere with pierogi on the menu everyday! I can't remember any names sorry, as it was a few years ago.

A useful bit of advice that we were given was that if you're paying in cash, if you say 'thank you' when handing it over, it's interpreted as saying 'keep the change' as a tip. If you'd like to get your change and arrange the tip yourself don't say anything.

In addition to Aichwitiz/Salt Mines that some have said (you can do both in a coach tour that takes a day and gives you a meal), I'd say the Jewish Quarter, we didn't really get the time to explore there. If you can arrange a tour (in a golf cart type thing), you can also get really good history. Krakow is also filled with churches, some are really beautiful, St Mary's Basilica is one, to have a look inside.

I'd say the castle isn't really a must-do, if you need to choose between things.

Also, random recommendation, if you're an adventurous type that's into horror, a trip to Lost Souls Alley is unlike any experience I've ever had 😂 take that as a warning

Salt Mines
Lost Souls Alley (if you dare)
Piano bar in main square

Oh, another one who's done Lost Souls Alley! I have to say, I really didn't understand what it was going to be before I went 🙈. I still talk about it ti this day!

Staying in self catered apartment too, will definitely ask them for suggestions.

Also definitely will be looking for lots of pierogi, they look great!

really useful tip about handing over money, thank you!! I definitely tip but that could end up a bit over generous Grin

I lived in Poland in the 80s - it was a bit different then! I can recommend Wierzynek restaurant on the Rynek Główny, which has been there forever. But as others have said, lots of other places to eat, particularly in Kazimierz.

friedbrainrightnow · 08/10/2022 10:37

Love love love Kraków so am very jealous of you right now!

I can imagine it was very different in the 80s! Thanks I’ll look those up Smile Good that there’s so much going on in Kazimierz.

Sorry you’re jealous but so glad everyone’s had such great experiences there!

Is there anything to avoid as really touristy or overrated?

One thing you absolutely must try and not sure if it was mentioned so far is Obwarzanek krakowski - it'a** traditional street food pretzel, you will find find it at every corner

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obwarzanek_krakowski

Enjoy Kraków, it's a wonderful city!

Pieceofpurplesky · 08/10/2022 11:45

Fabulous city. Been a couple of times and love sitting in the main square and watching the world go by! The jazz bar is fabulous.

Most places we ate were brilliant. After hours the square in Kazimierz comes alive - the centre bit has loads of fast food selling zapiekanka which are cheap and delicious. There is a brilliant vodka bar in the corner too.

All the places mentioned are worth visiting. It's an incredible place

I’ve checked the website and see it’s changed now. Back when we booked it was just a black screen saying that if you’re a fan of horror movies, take this tour! I honestly thought it was a walk through some movie props 😂

yes, it’s an escape room like no other.
