Please tell me about Hull!

DD is looking at Uni’s & one that offers a course she likes the look of is Hull. We live in London so I’m pretty clueless about what Hull is like (Google is not complementary, but then half the country think London’s a dump so that’s not much to go on!)
Most of the unis she’s looked at so far have been London/SE but we both think it might be good to look further afield (cost of living being an obvious advantage of moving away)
From her point of view she wants somewhere with a bit of life (nightlife in particular but also theatres & shops)
From a mum point of view I want somewhere reasonably safe (keep in mind we live in London so my idea of safe is not a little village!)

Ah I love Hull.
Although it's 15 years since I went to uni there!
But it was brilliant

Your mother bakes cakes in Hull?

ThereIsATInWater · 07/10/2022 15:53

Can't help on what it's like but my daughter is also looking at Hull University, going up in half term.

ItsNotReallyChaos · 07/10/2022 15:56

People love to bash Hull for some reason.

I went to uni there and chose to go back for a masters year. There are undoubtedly some bits of Hull to be avoided but the student areas always felt fine to me and I actually enjoyed wandering round. Having said that, it's over 15 years since I was there.

I liked the campus and the feel of the university when I visited on open day. It was a happy place without the pretentions of the big unis and accommodation is SO cheap in comparison to pretty much every other university city.

nancy75 · 07/10/2022 16:00

We will go & visit, the Google searches basically say it’s the armpit of the nation but looking at pictures of the city it looks really nice?!?
The cost of accommodation is a huge plus, the cost of living at the London unis has turned me prematurely grey!
Goid to hear positive feed back

My friend is a professor there. It has fantastic facilities and is a great studebt city. Cheap housing and nights out. Newland Avenue is Where the students tend to live it’s fabulous for local shopping. I don’t know what it’s like long term but as a uni place it’s brilliant.

WorstBJever · 07/10/2022 16:04

I went to Hull Uni, bear in mind I left 16 years ago, but it was amazing. I loved my time there, the uni is great, with good facilities and the city is a great place to be a student. Plus it was super cheap!

Hoppinggreen · 07/10/2022 16:07

We are going to the Hull Uni open day too!
its only just over an hour from us and to be honest it’s not somewhere I would choose to live or visit when we have other better options nearby.
Its very very different from London in terms of diversity and multiculturalism but it’s also pretty safe and there are some nice parts too.
I know a few people who went to Uni there and loved it, the campus seems nice and rents etc are lower than in other places.
The Uni also does a course DD is very interested in and so before visiting it’s high up on her list.
As I said, I would probably not choose to live there but I think it’s a good Uni and a good student scene

somewhereovertherain · 07/10/2022 16:07

It’s a shit hole

friend moved there and hates it too many druggies and dropouts.

Unlike London?

My ds went to uni in Hull and loved it. Had a fab time, good nightlife, pubs etc. It had a lot of investment when it was city of culture. Nice area around the marina/old town. He lived in the Newland area, which he loved. Plenty of student housing - he had a fab landlord - and rent is cheap! My dd is in another city where we are paying nearly twice as much!!

Ridley10 · 07/10/2022 16:10

I went to University there about 20 years ago. Lovely university and a nice city. I’ve got friends who still live there and love it. It’s a nice city. Smaller than some others. What other options are you looking?

2under2howscary · 07/10/2022 16:11

I'm from hull.
There are some awful parts and there are some beautiful parts.

The university itself is really good and their facilities are excellent. Not a lot to do outside of clubbing but easy enough transport to Leeds/york etc.

And the chip spice is amazing.

nancy75 · 07/10/2022 16:13

They give away free Hull chip spice at the open day - what on Earth is it?😂

She is Looking at Sussex, Kent (Canterbury) Reading , Guildhall conservatoire & Brunel. Basically she’s found the most expensive places to go to Uni!
Guildhall is the favourite but she really wants to move out & have the full Uni experience, which I understand. However Guildhall is 15 mins from us on the train & it seems crazy to spend so much on rent when she could live at home (halls are further from the Uni than our house!)

Hull is very affordable so ideal for student purses! I have a relative there and love visiting her, she lives around the avenues (not Newland Av but close), it's very arty and bohemian but in a working class way which is quite refreshing. The Humber St area is quite cool too, with little independent bars and galleries etc.

lobsterkiller · 07/10/2022 16:18

I love Hull, my family are from there and it's nice to pop back over every so often. I find people very friendly too.

The old town is lovely.

DeedIDo · 07/10/2022 16:21

SD went to uni in Hull (graduated in 2010), married a local and never came home. She loves it!

nancy75 · 07/10/2022 16:21

Well I’m glad I asked, it’s great to hear so many positive things, I’m looking forward to the trip up there!

My son is currently there, he loves it. The uni is great, accommodation is good and cheap, the city is small and friendly with plenty going on.

Spice for chips 😂

Seriously, it's seasoning for fries and is the nicest thing in the world!

Hull is great, fab nightlife for students, cheap rent, city centre has good shops.
Yes it's got rough parts but so has every city.

HopeAndJoy16 · 07/10/2022 16:23

I live in Hull, came as a student 10+ years ago now, and have now settled here.

Like every other city it has it's good areas and bad areas. Newland Ave area is fine, lots of cafés, bars, restaurants. The marina has been redeveloped recently and is fab. Hull is crap for shopping, but close enough to Leeds and Meadowhall. No idea about clubbing as that hasn't been my scene for a long time! They have regular festivals in the summer. I would say the "bad" areas of Hull are really not that bad compared to other cities. I work in some of the worst areas and have never had any problems. There's definitely low levels of knife crime and very very low gun crime, there's not much of a gang culture here (I know people in the justice system).

I loved my time at Uni but it will have changed loads since I was there, so can't comment on whether it's considered good or not now. I do come into contact with students at work, and they have the usual grumbles about lectures and workload 🙄
There is student accommodation on campus now (it used to be in Cottingham which was a bus ride away). It's all very new, and the students say it is nice. Will be a million times better than the accommodation I had at the Lawns!

nancy75 · 07/10/2022 16:23

I’m not too bothered about some rough parts, we live in London so we’re used to that.

We don’t have chip spice though!

So to get to places like Leeds is it just a train journey or would she need a car?
