Two parents taking child to school

Pointless post really, but is it a thing now for both parents to walk their child/children to school every day? I see it all the time at our school, and wonder how people find the time. Don’t remember it being a thing with my older children.

More people working from home maybe? My DH quite often comes along to drop our LO at nursery.

It’s a nice walk before work and LO likes it so why not?

AutumnScream · 07/10/2022 14:21

Does it matter? Its nice that both parents can spend a little time with their child in the morning.

cookiecreammmpie · 07/10/2022 14:22

I haven't really noticed that. I normally just walk my 3 younger kids myself but if my husband's rest day is a week day he'll come to the school with me as it helps me out, the kid's school is split over 2 sites so we can leave a bit later and split halfway.

Tbf op my husband commented on this before as he never gets to do the school run due to work and the odd time he has been he was shocked to find so many dads there, I think it's alot of people work from home now after Covid. I do like it when my husband comes along though and so does our ds

If they have the time, then why not?

DH takes ours, but it’s nice to go along sometimes if I don’t have a meeting or anything too urgent.

IneffableGenderFairy · 07/10/2022 14:24

I'm always a bit jealous when I see it.

megletthesecond · 07/10/2022 14:26

It'll be people who WFH.
I don't walk my dcs to school anymore but I do get out for a walk / errand before I start work.

whoruntheworldgirls · 07/10/2022 14:26

We both generally walk to her to school and back. It's nice to get a walk and it's a good time to chat to her properly without any distractions.

eurochick · 07/10/2022 14:26

It's probably people working from home tagging along with their partner to get out of the house and stretch their legs.

We sometimes have both of us in the car for the morning school run as we combine it with dropping off at the station if one of us is on the office that day.

Espritdescalier · 07/10/2022 14:27

We take turns to drop off but often go to pick up together now DH is WFH. It's lovely for our DC to have both parents there when they come out of school and is useful logistically as they often come out at the same time from different ends of the school. DH almost never picked up pre-pandemic as he was office based but if we can both make 20 minutes now we go together, why not?

feministqueen · 07/10/2022 14:27

Yep same for us. My husband is home at the min so does the school run. When I work from home I go also.

Doesn’t matter at all, I’m just puzzled. We juggle who does drop off around meetings etc. I can’t imagine having enough time for both of us to go.

Notplayingball · 07/10/2022 14:29

We do it occasionally, but usually prefer to split it up with one doing drop off and other collecting so each parent gets a break.

NashvilleQueen · 07/10/2022 14:29

Single parent here. I think it's a lovely thing. Bit of fresh air, both spending time with their child etc. Perhaps their organisations have said no meetings before 9am etc so as to allow parents some flexibility. I'm all for it.

Mano2020 · 07/10/2022 14:30

Me and my Husband both WFH so we drop the little one together each morning and go for a walk before we start work together.

hopeishere · 07/10/2022 14:30

Yeah our neighbours both walk the kids to school sometimes. They walk the dog as well. They both WFH so I guess it's much easier now.

School starts at 9.15 here, so I think that’s why I’m puzzled. Most people have started work by then.

I see it a bit as well. Our school is a 40 minute drive away (although obviously some people live closer to it). Quite a few parents both do the drop off (fewer seem to both do the pickup). I think it is because of wfh. School starts at 8.15 and finishes at 4.15 so I think more can do it together in the mornings if wfh. (I am just assuming though).

I like it. It's ncie to share things like that.

newmum1976 · 07/10/2022 14:34

Sounds like it’s a lockdown/WFH thing then.

Thenightcircus · 07/10/2022 14:35

DH and I do most school runs together. I love it. I did the first 3 years all by myself and it was awfully difficult with a longterm health condition.

Now we do it together and it's lovely

Many of the parents go together. It isn't unusual here at all. Lots of nurses, doctors and council office workers.

Thenightcircus · 07/10/2022 14:37

(School starts 8:30am here so everyone can be at work for 9am)

NashvilleQueen · 07/10/2022 14:37

But maybe they've been working beforehand and book the time out for the school run. Or perhaps they just do it twice a week rather than every day.

One of the massive gains about WFH most of the time is that many employers have become much more flexible about how people do their jobs and so can accommodate family life in a way that just wasn't possible before.

My children are older so get themselves ready and off to school alone but people many in my organisation do have in their diaries 'school drop off/pick up' and meetings are arranged around those times.

Goldbar · 07/10/2022 14:59

Slightly jealous of those whose schedules allow this. It must be nice to have the additional family time together and for both parents to feel involved in their children's school lives.

Volhhg · 07/10/2022 15:36

Yeah it's definitely a thing. It's a pain because it makes the school playground and drop off in school quite congested and unpleasant. Our school have sent numerous emails asking for one adult to do the school drop off/ pick up because of this. No idea why one can't wait outside. Makes it's harder for those with one adult and a pushchair/ younger kids
