Two parents taking child to school

Pointless post really, but is it a thing now for both parents to walk their child/children to school every day? I see it all the time at our school, and wonder how people find the time. Don’t remember it being a thing with my older children.

We used to most of the time and still often go together to collect from secondary school. If you can why not? I don't see what the issue is?

AlwaysLatte · 07/10/2022 18:49

(In our case we are retired and we walk the dog afterwards).

DelphiniumBlue · 07/10/2022 18:50

We used to sometimes to do this- backstory was that DH worked irregular shifts, so I arranged my work hours so that I would always be available to do the school run. If it turned out he wasn't working then we would sometimes do the school run together if we both fancied a quick walk.

It's on DH's way to work so normally he does it. Mondays is the only day I'm not working at that time so we both take them.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 07/10/2022 18:57

I start work at 7am, but log off at 8:30 to do school run then log back on to carry on working, now i wfh its much easier to start my working day earlier and just pop out to do school runs

Oysterbabe · 07/10/2022 18:58

And out school starts at 8:40. There are none round here that start as late as 9:15.

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 07/10/2022 19:06

As an adult my dh feels somewhat sad his farmer df never took him to school.. We share school runs but rarely do them together!

BeautifulDragon · 07/10/2022 19:11

I think it's nice.

My DC's love it on the odd occasion we can both walk them to school. Plus I like my DH and enjoying having him to chat to for an extra 10 minutes in the morning.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 07/10/2022 19:24

I think it's lovely to see both parents doing the school run. Way back in the 1970s / 80s when I was doing the school run, you rarely saw a father. Work was work and done in the office with no exceptions. You had to be at your desk.

surreygirl1987 · 07/10/2022 19:33

I think that's lovely.

he has been he was shocked to find so many dads there
Erm...why? Because taking children to school is a woman's job...?

Thenightcircus · 07/10/2022 19:37

So i asked the teacher today if it was OK for DH and I to do the school run together (someone uphread said some schools didn't like it!)

And she said "oh yes, we love seeing Mum AND Dad! It's lovely!"

So we'll keep doing it together 😊

You, an adult, asked the teacher if it’s was ok for your DH to join you on the school run?!

PinkButtercups · 07/10/2022 19:43

I'd love for DP to be able to do nursery runs with me! Nursery starts at 8:45 and he starts work at 8 so no chance of that unless he has holiday!

primeoflife · 07/10/2022 19:44

Sometimes me and dh used to do this and then pop to a cafe for a bacon roll (back then I ate meat 🤣)

Goldbar · 07/10/2022 14:59

Slightly jealous of those whose schedules allow this. It must be nice to have the additional family time together and for both parents to feel involved in their children's school lives.

Dh did shift work so don't be jealous as we rarely had weekends together!! This was a bit of time for us all to be together!!

Whataplanker · 07/10/2022 19:49

I'm a teacher. Since covid, there is definitely more of a mixture of mums and dads or both on the school run due to WFH.

Coucous · 07/10/2022 19:51

It's lovely parents can do this! It's nicer if you can actually walk to school.

Chanttotheprince · 07/10/2022 19:54

Tbf op my husband commented on this before as he never gets to do the school run due to work and the odd time he has been he was shocked to find so many dads there

why on earth was he shocked to see parents looking after their children. This is an odd response

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 07/10/2022 19:54

We do sometimes, means we can take the dog too for a quick walk before work as dogs not allowed on school grounds so one of us can wait outside with ddog

Weemummykay · 07/10/2022 19:54

I’m on mat leave at the moment n 1 of my partners days off are Wednesday so we all take ds 3yrs together and pick him up. Nice bit of family time together. Or if the weathers not great partner takes him on his bike trailer

Squeezedsquash · 07/10/2022 19:57

Our jobs mean we can work until he evenings or during the day. 20 minutes of fresh air and walking and some time with the kids is worth the extra time working in the evenings, so we go together sometimes.

Doowop1919 · 07/10/2022 20:02

I stay at home and DH works 3 days from home. He will walk us to the bus stop in the morning when we go to nursery to get out the house, spend a little extra time with DS, and get some fresh air before work.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 07/10/2022 20:05

I love seeing it. Its lovely for the dcs, i was a lone parent with eldest so never did the school run with ex.
But if dh has a customer booked for after 9 then he comes along. The dcs love it. Alternatively he does 1 dc, walking distance, whilst i drive the other.

ScottishLavender · 07/10/2022 20:08

My ex worked shifts. So he would be around for either the morning drop off or the afternoon pickup, our daughter loved it when we were both there.

Paddingtonthebear · 07/10/2022 20:08

Morning drop off, yes we usually both go and the dog comes too. One child, we both wfh and it’s a ten minute walk to school with 8.35pm drop off, we take an extended walk back but still home by 9am.
