Two parents taking child to school

Pointless post really, but is it a thing now for both parents to walk their child/children to school every day? I see it all the time at our school, and wonder how people find the time. Don’t remember it being a thing with my older children.

At our school kids get dropped off at the gate or bottom of the road, parents don’t go onsite unless they have an appointment

Thenightcircus · 07/10/2022 20:15

@Softleftpowerstance yes because as I said a PP upthread said some schools don't like it due to overcrowding and clogging up on paths etc.

A hangover from social distancing perhaps

No harm in checking, is there. 😘

Celestiel · 07/10/2022 20:15

SEN parents here, one not driving. School in rural area. Not that it's anyones business but both of us there is much more helpful during a meltdown...

I know a couple families who did this. I never understood it myself. Why inconvenience two people? One is enough.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/10/2022 20:27

A nice thing to do, if you can.

Pumperthepumper · 07/10/2022 20:28

I can’t believe people are actually checking with the school if it’s ok for two parents to walk their kid in. As if school staff don’t have enough to do.

keeprunning55 · 07/10/2022 20:30

Perhaps they work shifts, wfh, holiday, ill, won the lottery, unemployed…
Its a lovely thing to do if you can. I’ve never, ever given it any thought. I’ve been a parent and a teacher for over 20 years.

I see it a bit as well. Our school is a 40 minute drive away (although obviously some people live closer to it). Quite a few parents both do the drop off (fewer seem to both do the pickup). I think it is because of wfh. School starts at 8.15 and finishes at 4.15 so I think more can do it together in the mornings if wfh. (I am just assuming though).

I like it. It's ncie to share things like that.

Possibly dropping the other ostent off at work or the station and the afternoon pick up is too early?

That's why both of us often are there for collecting. Youngest can have massive meltdowns. Much easier to handle if two adults around.

I thought the same 😂

My DH and my daughter's stepdad always accompanies me on my daughter's school run, he WFH and we drive down then he walks home and I go off to work.
He enjoys the walk home before he starts work for the day.

Perhaps many parents think that walking together as a family is a pleasure rather than an inconvenience.

Mumsnet has officially run out of things to criticise.

luckyRhino · 07/10/2022 20:39

We do it when we can. Not everyone has the same routines as you op.

Tbf op my husband commented on this before as he never gets to do the school run due to work and the odd time he has been he was shocked to find so many dads there, I think it's alot of people work from home now after Covid. I do like it when my husband comes along though and so does our ds

Shocked to see so many dads there? So it’s a revelation to your husband that other men take a role in the school run and don’t just leave it to the wives? Hopefully he has taken note and plans to chip in a bit more?!

sunflower198 · 07/10/2022 20:43

Me and OH often both walk to collect son, both wfh so it gives us a break and chance to walk the dog at same time!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/10/2022 20:49

Is it the same families, though? Occasionally, my DH was around at drop off time. The kids used to love it if he took them for a change but loved it even more if we both went. Usually if we both went it was for an event, though, that started after they'd done the register, like a special assembly or something.

Atmywitsend29 · 07/10/2022 20:51

DH and I used to do this 😂 it wasn't often that I'd be home to do the morning school run so we would both go if I was home

I work in a school office. Many parents are very needy. It's so different to when I was a parent of primary kids. They ring up for anything. Proper fusspots.

Booksandwine80 · 07/10/2022 20:53

I WFH and DH works shifts. If he’s around we will both walk her to school-sometimes we both do pick up as well. Would never have dreamt I could be judged for this 😳😩

Mfsf · 07/10/2022 20:56

If my partner is an afternoon shift we often take my daughter to school and after go out for breakfast and spend some time together. Why is that weird ??

@PrincessButtercupToo i thought that too and I don’t see why taking ur child to school for an education is an inconvenience wither it’s one parent or both doing it 🤔

We only get to do it occasionally, it’s normally DH that does it alone. It’d be nice to have the time to do it more often.

This time’s going to pass too quickly, I want to enjoy as much of it as I can.

breya · 07/10/2022 21:02

Do you live in a bubble where everybody works 9-5 op!? I don't understand how your puzzled over this.

I work flexible hours, dh works shifts. Quite often we are able to do the school run together.....

norwichmummy123 · 07/10/2022 21:08

Why are you bothered?
