I live in a country where there is PR, and I can assure you that it's no panacea. I say this because I see the 'if only we had PR it would all be fine' come up a lot.

The issue in the UK is declining quality of political debate and declining capability and integrity of people in government because of gullible voters. This is way bigger than Brexit. The same rogues would all be around in a PR system. The only difference I can think of is that Nigel Farage would be in cabinet as part of a Tory-Brexit coalition.

When you have people like Johnson, or Truss, or Raab, or Gove etc running the show, and you have people like the Labour front bench of the last half decade opposing them the outcomes won't be great whatever the electoral system.

Over a decade ago I was talking with my mother, who still lives in the UK, about a conversation she'd had with her hairdresser. How are you voting in the mayoral election, she asked? The reply: Oh, Boris. He's a laugh.

That's the issue. If politicians get voted in because they're a laugh, or because you believe then when they promise the moon, you will find yourself governed by idiots regardless of the voting system.

When people say they can't see Starmer as PM because he's 'boring' I feel like headbutting the table. Politics aside, he's just the sort of person you want in charge, serious, successful career, intelligent, not a utopian and not a bullshitter.

There are definitely problems with pr; coalitions collapsing, really dodgy tiny parties getting a say. It needs to be properly thought through.

Apparently the next full meeting of the 1922 is Wednesday if that makes any difference

By all accounts he's not at all boring and very funny (as is Gordon Brown) but running the country is usually a pretty serious business, not suited to some musical hall turn/game show panellist.

"BREAKING:

Jeremy Hunt is poised to announce that the energy price guarantee will only remain universal until April

It will then become targeted and capped

Govt helped by falling gas prices

@MrHarryCole first highlighted changes this morning"

Hardly needs pointing out Labour's policy was 6 months and paid for by windfall tax then reassess.
This could, should have been introduced in August.

Oh FFS, sorry for the swearing but they've fucked up our mortgages and now they're rinsing us on the energy bills too, they need to get out!"

TokyoSushi · 17/10/2022 10:58

Jinx @Notonthestairs !

TokyoSushi · 17/10/2022 10:58

Although I have a fear the energy bills will go through the roof again in April, hopefully wrong!

ClaudineClare · 17/10/2022 11:00

So Truss lied when she said that not only would the freeze protect us this winter, but next winter?

This will not go down well.

Indeed it needs to be done carefully

But there are also definitely problems with our current system and I believe that the total problems could be much less with PR

I worry about this too. We have no idea whether there will be further infrastructure "issues".

tobee · 17/10/2022 11:02

This time last week Jeremy Hunt wouldn't have a clue that today he'd be chancellor of the exchequer and de facto prime minister. (I think he was on holiday) and about to make this statement with everyone hanging on his words. Didn't he go out in the first round of the leadership election? The last one?

tobee · 17/10/2022 11:03

Agree @midgetastic

tobee · 17/10/2022 11:06

Dorries still faithfully pushing for Johnson to return

It’s fascinating watching the last nail work into the coffin.

I don’t think the rest of this is going to go well.

I bet he’s frantically texting her from the beach telling her to shut up - he doesn’t want this crap show.

Also I bet Johnson finding the money better to pay for the holidays, house decorations and bullet proof play houses etc etc.

tobee · 17/10/2022 11:19

I wish they'd ditch using the word "mission" - sounds cultist.

mibbelucieachwell · 17/10/2022 11:23

So, back to worrying about energy bills from April.

A fairer tax policy but colossal austerity continues with the inevitable result on the economy.

Feels like one extreme to another.

DuncinToffee · 17/10/2022 11:29

Ian Dunt sums it up

These people. Not just Truss. Johnson and May too. They've dismantled this country, day by day and week by week. Trading competence for populism, planning for will, responsibility for tribalism. Criminally irresponsible.

How can she possibly continue after Hunt's speech?

I suspect she will go under health reasons.

Blossomtoes · 17/10/2022 11:38

The big boys will be telling her to resign any day now, once they’ve got their succession plan in place.

scaredoff · 17/10/2022 11:41

a PM who at least understands the economy just now would be useful.

Agreed, by OMG how did we get to the point where that even has to be specified as an advantage?

I wish ‘deliver’ and ‘delivering’ would die a death.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 11:43

To watch someone rip up your plans in front of your face must be so hard !
She has had to reluctantly agree to it as well
There isn't any reason for her to be there now
