I think Liz Truss should hold another news conference tomorrow morning. She can unilaterally call a General Election. And then take no questions at all. Then the Tories/Jeremy Hunt/the cabinet/Graham Brady will have to spend the next hours frantically dealing with the aftermath! Come on PM what have you got to lose?

Hehehehe

TokyoSushi · 17/10/2022 06:48

Oh, looks like we're getting another mini budget of sorts today, what the actual fuck is going on in this country?!

I reckon it's Hunt basically reversing the bulk of the original mini budget, which is him basically undoing Truss' mess. How she can possible sit there with any authority whilst he does it I don't know.

I wonder if they'll move to get her out today too?

I feel like, another, big day is on the cards.

What a bloody shambles.

Saucery · 17/10/2022 06:57

It must be humiliating for her, to know she’s a puppet viewed with derision even by her own party. Good.

Because having an ill thoughtout rushed budget that wasn't a budget to avoid scrutiny in parliament worked so well last time.

TokyoSushi · 17/10/2022 07:00

Exactly @jgw1

I bloody despair!

NEW: An MRP poll by Opinium for the Trades Union Congress projects a "1997-style landslide for Labour".

LAB 411
CON 137
LDM 39
SNP 37

10 current Cabinet ministers would lose their seats (inc Jeremy Hunt, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Therese Coffey) as well as former PM Boris Johnson.

It could be way worse if there is tactical voting like in 1997.

Predictions like that have the Tories retaking by-election gains by the Lib Dems. But it seems likely that the Lib Dems would hold those gains, and win similar seats like them, especially in the south.

If that happens the Tories hold fewer than a hundred seats.

Notonthestairs · 17/10/2022 07:31

I agree it can only be U turns incoming.

It is utterly ridiculous. We haven't had a government in months now. Really this year has been wasted mopping up Conservative messes.

I think we deserve to see another PMQs before they get her out. 😁

TokyoSushi · 17/10/2022 07:56

Well yes @GreenLunchBox it would be a shame not to have just one more!

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 08:04

J Hunt must be loving all this.
He looks like a man with a big ego
Having to sit next to the person ripping up all your plans will be the ultimate humiliation for her
If it was anyone else I'd feel a bit sorry for them
Brutal none the less

BananaBlue · 17/10/2022 08:16

Ive found my people!!!

The govt shitshow (as collectively over past few years) is fucking up UK productivity, I know I’m losing hrs to news, Twitter and LBC.

DuncinToffee · 17/10/2022 08:31

George Parker FT

Looks like about two-thirds of the £45bn of unfunded tax cuts in Kwarteng's mini Budget will be binned. NICs and stamp duty the big survivors. Spending cuts still being discussed

No-one from the Government on the media round today.

No-one from the Government on the media round today.

Yes it's all a bit quiet. Worried they'll stick their foot in it or be shown not to have a clue what's happening.

DuncinToffee · 17/10/2022 08:41

Statement expected at 11am, Commons statement 3.30pm

Shouldn't that be the other way around?

Markets are calming down

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 08:55

The markets are probably calming down because of all the u turns and the non borrowing.
It's good, but if J Hunt is now the new PM by default we all need to be told this
Not that anyone can do anything, but it's only fair.
Have to see what happens !

DuncinToffee · 17/10/2022 09:06

This crisis budget is intended to reassure the markets, no surprise really then when it does. Markets are dictating the government at the moment.

Completely agree re Hunt, however transparency and honesty is not something this government does.

My own actual CHILD (well, not a child clearly as they are eligible to vote now) 'doesn't know' who they'll vote for. Ive fucked up on my fundamental job of parenting. If my own child doesn't know we need to get rid of the Tories then I don't think it's a done deal that they are finished at the GE because I rant about the damage those fuckers are doing every single day. Apparently they won't vote for the Tories, though 🤔
We live in a Labour stronghold so it's immaterial but it makes me sad. Maybe they think Labour will win anyway so they'll just vote for the party that aligns most with their values <clutches at straws>

I think I can imagine what daddy Truss is going through

I'm pretty sure I'm as anti-Tory as anyone in the country, have never voted for them and could never imagine doing so, but like your child I don't yet know who I'll vote for at the next election. The country's problems are much deeper than the Tory party, and it's debateable whether Labour as currently constituted is any kind of answer to them. We desperately need PR, and Starmer is not going to touch it if Labour get a majority.

Important to understand why the Chancellor is acting today. It’s not just about bringing forward some tax/spend announcements from 31st October - it’s trying to reduce how many he has to announcement full stop. Because…
…the @OBR_UK won’t have finalised the interest rate assumptions underpinning their government debt interest forecast. So pre-announcing tough choices is about hoping that markets reduce rates on govt debt ➡️ a smaller fiscal hole to fill on 31st October

I’m glad they haven’t wheeled out some nodding dog of a politician to try and justify anything ahead of an official statement. It’s time they acted like some semblance of adult, stop leaking stuff and stop whining on the Today programme.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 09:30

Getting the debts / 'black hole' deficit down from 75 billion ( or 45 depending on what source you read ) is huge
I saw yesterday that it would mean all the government departments having to trim millions off their budgets :(
It's definitely going to be austerity 2
Might have been even worse if they had borrowed even more money as were the original plans though!

TokyoSushi · 17/10/2022 09:36

I'm absolutely no fan of any of them, but things do seem to have settled a little bit this morning. There was a guy on Sky News just now who seemed to think that this should settle the mortgages down too.

I think the absolute best of a very, very, very bad job would be to keep Hunt at the Treasury and put Sunak in as the PM. He did at least seem to have a reasonable idea of what he was doing at the Treasury so a PM who at least understands the economy just now would be useful.

Truss needs to go. Today. I don't think that it will be long.

DuncinToffee · 17/10/2022 09:41

It really is a case of who is the least bad.

Well quite. They're having to answer to the Gods of Capital this time, not the plebs.

ClaudineClare · 17/10/2022 10:09

Does anyone listen to R5 Live in the mornings? If so, did you hear this bit and do you know who the MP was. It is so cringeworthy (if true)!
