Shelf life of a lettuce! Excellent.
Also less common sense than your average salad ingredient.

JRM is basically saying “Fudge the numbers so it looks like our policies make sense or we’ll get rid of you"

Yes.

But I'm sure the OBR are aware their work will be very carefully scrutinised - although the Government will make use of any cover they might provide.

They seem to be independent but somehow affiliated to the Treasury - I don't really understand the internal structure.

It's like in the last 12 years the Tory pms have decided to be worse than last one but also in very differing ways. Truss's awfulness is totally different to Johnson's awfulness.

On (whichever) podcast I was listening to yesterday they seemed to be saying that a unity candidate would not be Sunak as MPs hate him. Presumably because he did the dirty work that they were too spineless to do wrt Johnson going. Mordant was mentioned but seen as too divisive. Wallace was the most likely for unity but he won't want to so....

Yes completely agree. All completely hideous, yet all entirely different. A bit like the film Seven or similar, a showcase of awfulness if you will!

TokyoSushi · 12/10/2022 22:48

Yes that's possible @Fladdermus she might be done for on Friday. The weekend media will go wild and the hysteria will continue to build. It's absolutely fascinating, if only it were happening to somebody else!

TokyoSushi · 12/10/2022 22:49

All of this would have have been somewhat easier if it was being delivered by the rather lovely Mark Carney!

Swoon! Wink

DowningStreetParty · 13/10/2022 00:55

The diff between Carney era and current Bank of England leadership is noted. London evening standard reporting that Bank of America and others are criticising BoE for not being upfront about awful Brexit economic effects- so as not to rock the Tory boat politically. Not so independent then.

verdantverdure · 13/10/2022 06:34

I honestly think nothing will get significantly better until we face up to the enormous damage Brexit is doing to our country and reverse it.

It's like trying to live our lives with a tantrumming four year old permanently clamped round our left ankle.

I find this so weird.
It's the same in the media. Just no mention of the huge elephant in the room when talking about the steaming piles of dung (like,no staff in hospitality, no food in the shops, price rises etc).
I don't understand it. Unless the editors think people are so "bored of brexit" that it will lose them readers to mention it.

Agree entirely.

Notonthestairs · 13/10/2022 08:26

I think this mess might have primed some parts of the public to talk about how best to tackle growth.

But there isn't the political appetite to grasp it. I'd imagine their focus groups are talking about the need for stability and predictability and Brexit would reopen wounds.

We can't even have a sane conversation about the benefits of the single market.

Prof Brian Cox is calling it

“Government by sunk cost fallacy”

JRM is basically saying “Fudge the numbers so it looks like our policies make sense or we’ll get rid of you"

And here was me thinking he was saying that whatever disaster the OBR forecasts, reality will be a lot worse as the OBR are always overly optimistic. 😁

Notonthestairs · 13/10/2022 11:02

"If the 22 changed the rules, we'd hit the threshold for a confidence vote in a couple of hours", a Tory MP tells me.

Safe to say the mood is sulphurous in parliament this morning"

I think either she will change course (unlikely) or they will get rid of her. And soon.

Notonthestairs · 13/10/2022 11:31

There isn't a clear way out. If she dumps Kwarteng she'll need a Chancellor that the markets trusted (Sunak? Javid?) but then what? We would have a PM & a Chancellor with different ideologies and potentially more support for the chancellor than for the PM (from MPs and the public).

If she just reversed the fiscal event (bar the energy support) they've damaged their own credibility with pretty much everyone.

verdantverdure · 13/10/2022 11:50

Isn't the problem the IEA, and Taxpayers Alliance ideology all Conservatives seem to spout these days of privatisation, deregulation, tax cuts for the rich and for corporations, small state, spending cuts, and not much by way of a safety net etc.

Sidebar: I was shocked last week to discover that a child only gets free school meals if their household income is less than £7000. How the giddy fuck does anyone run a household in the U.K. in 2022 on less than £7000?!

verdantverdure · 13/10/2022 11:53

In short, the problem is Conservative Party ideology. It's the reason our lives have been getting worse.

Or is it just Brexit?

(But Brexit was wanted to serve Conservative ideology wasn't it? It allowed for more deregulation and for environmental protections to be taken away.)

verdantverdure · 13/10/2022 12:00

I mean what's "Conservative" about crashing the pension funds and wiping billions off the value of stocks and shares?

What's "Conservative" about costing the country £65billion for sweet FA?

What's "Conservative" about making government borrowing more expensive to pay back?

What's Conservative about letting £4billion of furlough be claimed fraudulently?

What's Conservative about costing the country £11billion for a Treasury fuck up?

What's "Conservative" about paying more in debt interest than we spend on education for our children?

DuncinToffee · 13/10/2022 12:08

'Growth' Angry

Patients waiting for routine hospital treatment in England hits record high > 7m patients were waiting to start treatment at end of August, acc to NHS England said. Up from 6.8m in July & highest number since records began in August 2007

More evidence of pressure on hospitals in England: A&E performance equal lowest since records began – with 71% of patients seen/treated/assessed within 4 hours.
Nearly 33,000 patients were waiting more than 12 hours in A&E for a bed after a decision to admit – another high

A former cabinet minister tells me: “Brace for the mother of all U-Turns on the mini budget today. A friendly person in the know is advising us to steer clear of the media today to avoid the explosion. We wouldn’t want to look silly by tomorrow.”
