Tell me your most ingenious cleaning/ time saving hacks??

Looking for some cleaning inspiration, and I love anything that saves time, or is multitasking.

If you have any tips or ideas to share?

I will go first. I use a spray mop to clean my floors each day. It takes me like 2 minutes and because I do it daily the dirt never actually builds up on the floor. I use either zoflora or fabulousa so it also makes my home smell nice.

Any tips for a non stinky washing machine?

Ran mine on an empty hot wash last week and it was better but it's not as fresh again and I don't want to keep doing that!

Door open or closed when not using it?

Cleaning the seal and dispenser tray and then never using liquid detergent or fabric softener.

We have a cleaner for 2hrs a week. Best money I have ever spent, and it makes sure you keep the place tidy. Also have a robo mop and vacuum for during the week, just set it off when I’m working from home. Our house is so much cleaner and more tidy now (we decluttered massively before we got a cleaner). I feel so much calmer and love being at home now.

gluenotsoup · 07/10/2022 17:59

If you squeegee the tiles and shower screen every use, does it actually clean it, or just stop it looking drippy? What about the grout? I hate cleaning grubby grout, so will that stop it discolouring or do I just need to keep scrubbing?

For washing machine I do a 90 degree wash once a month with a washer cleaning tab thing in.
I'm off to Amazon now to look at better limescale removers. @Loachworks what is this glass protector thingy that I need?
I'm in a hard water area and it does my head in when I go to stay with friends whose shower doors remain pristine while I can't see out of mine!

Take out the detergent drawer and give it a good scrub, same for the door seal. Run a hot wash with a cup of vinegar, always leave the door open after use.

Controversial, but my method for getting the kids to tidy up is tell them I'm going to hoover and anything left on the floor in ten minutes will be binned. Fear is your friend....

Haha this works a treat with my two year old, but not in a fear way - it’s a fun game as he runs ahead of me

After a good oven pride or professional clean, just pop a liner in and wipe it out after every use. Quick once over all round.

gretr · 07/10/2022 19:25

Professional cleaning is amazing. We have a double oven and just used the second one when the first got too dirty 😂. Bought the oven pride stuff, but it sat in a cupboard. It hadn’t been cleaned since installation 6yrs ago (yes I know how disgusting that sounds!). It’s like a new oven, best £100 ever spent. They literally take it apart and soak the components in a special mix in their van whilst they scrub the interior.

I don’t like the oven liners. We tried them and they give off a horrible toxic smell, it can’t be good for you having that plastic in your oven heating up all the time.

AutumnScream · 07/10/2022 19:51

Following i need to keep my house organised.

Chloefairydust · 07/10/2022 23:23

I like the idea of a self cleaning oven though … How does it actually work though? This sounds like magic to me haha

I no longer trust the pyrolysis mode after the metal hook that holds the door shut pinged off its spring and shattered the inner oven door. (SMEG did fix the oven as a goodwill gesture as it was only months out of warranty but we’re going back to oven pride!).

😱 I bet that was scary @DelurkingAJ

Maybe I will just keep to my usual method (which is getting DH to clean the oven🤣)

I also convinced him that certain dirty and unpleasant jobs that I don’t like to do are mens jobs. These include:

•oven cleaning
•taking out the bins
•cleaning out hair from plug holes
•mowing the lawn
•protector of the home removal of scary bugs 🕷

And the best cure for a stinky washing machine is to do an empty hot wash with bleach every so often… What you can smell is actually bacteria 🤢… so once the bleach has killed the bacteria, your washing machine will smell like new again!

When you change the sheets use the used pillowcases to dust the room - particularly bedside tables!

🤢eww … This is one tip I will not do, DH is a sleep drooler so that pillow case is going straight into the wash!

Im really concerned that hotels do this!

I clean pretty much everything with Fairy liquid - shower glass and tiles, kitchen worktop and doors, sinks etc. It leaves everything grease free and shining.

I scrub the shower while I'm in it then dry it off when I get out.

miraveile · 08/10/2022 05:57

Use the Clean Shower spray on your shower as soon as you finish using it each day, no need to wipe or anything. You'll never need to clean your shower again (albeit you probably should!)

Also, as you move things from A to B, take slemtjkng from B to A

In rooms where things tend to congregate which don't belong there, have a small box to keep things in which you can then carry about the house putting things away as you go.

Have a place for everything

For sentimental stuff, choose a container and it cannot over flow it. Throw rest away or donate

HowVeryBizarre · 08/10/2022 06:00

My robovac was a game changer. I only vacuum properly once every 7-10 days now.

What do you mean, just sue at the shower with bathroom cleaner and leave it?

Door open or closed when not using it?

Clean the filters
use a drum cleaning cycle
wash the drawer out
check the seal for mold use astonish mold and mildew spray it’s a pound

Loachworks · 08/10/2022 06:16

@PAFMO Rain-x it's great for cleaning windows outside too.
'Wet and Forget' once a week/fortnight left overnight isn't cheap but worth it. I buy both at Costco.
They also sell KitchenAid teatowels that are the best I've found.

Loachworks · 08/10/2022 06:19

The pillowcase hack is disgusting, especially if used on cups and glasses. I was a head housekeeper years ago and I wouldn't have dreamed of it.

SuffolkUnicorn · 08/10/2022 06:25

Lint scrapers are only good if you have pets
pink stuff is rubbish especially the paste
the only way to really clean floors is on your knees mops do not clean floors

if you hate washing up use paper plates and throwaway coffee cups

make the beds as soon as you get up

cocktail sticks are a great cleaning tool

clean the toaster trays with the hoover then shake so all the crumbs fall out then hoover off the worktop

remove toilet seat and soak in the bath with zoflora whilst your tackling the toilet and sink

Pumice stone for limescale

descale the kettle when your doing your last washing up of the night

following I love cleaning

also those that commented that ‘method has no nasties’ yes it does it contains methylisothiazolinone
