Tell me your most ingenious cleaning/ time saving hacks??

Looking for some cleaning inspiration, and I love anything that saves time, or is multitasking.

If you have any tips or ideas to share?

I will go first. I use a spray mop to clean my floors each day. It takes me like 2 minutes and because I do it daily the dirt never actually builds up on the floor. I use either zoflora or fabulousa so it also makes my home smell nice.

I like the magic none-stick oven liner, hav had it for years and would not want to be without it.

*have 🙄

Thelnebriati · 07/10/2022 11:03

I tried using tin foil as oven liner and now its welded to the oven floor so don't do that.

My favourite tip is from Mumsnet and its use 3 bin liners in the kitchen bin.

Get a cleaner. Gives me some time back and everything is cleaned.

Get stuff done as the kettle boils, it’s amazing how much a few minutes a few times a day makes.

Wipe the sink as you brush teeth,

Agree ... I switched to a boiling water tap recently and while I'm a convert I've noticed that there are things I now have to find a time to do as I'm no longer waiting for a kettle 😆

@OatFox this sounds like a good idea, I do hate having to scrub the shower weekly, and the glass always gets those limescale marks on that are really difficult to clean… What spray do you use?

I use ''Method'' bathroom spray, no need to rinse, just spray on while shower tiles and glass are wet and squeegee off .
We live in a very hard water area, and the 'Method' spray works really well.
An über house proud [Cleaning mad] friend told me of it.
I do love Method range. {No nasty chems}

I paid someone to professionally clean my shower glass. This was in 2019 before covid. I’d tried everything and couldn’t get the white marks off (hard water area). She told me she used Harpic limescale remover.
She told me to use a squeegee each time we shower to wipe the water off the glass and we haven’t had any white marks since.

Squeegeeing the glass and tiles after each shower is essential! :)

LittleBoat1 · 07/10/2022 11:46

I do this too, toaster lives in a tray in a cupboard so it's easy to take out and put away. Nothing lives on the kitchen worktops so they're easy to wipe down.

I've seen this tip before and didn't get it then either, are there people who literally stand and watch the kettle while it boils? Doesn't everyone just switch it on, carry on with what your doing then make the drink?

My husband stands and watches. Same with a pan of pasta. Does my head in!

OceanbreezeSun · 07/10/2022 12:09

Declutter.
The less clutter you have, the easier it is to clean/dust etc. Lots of knick knacks everywhere will instantly make an otherwise nice room look untidy.

Wash up as you go along. I clean the kitchen as I’m cooking. Nothing worse then finishing a nice meal and then someone having to clean up a stack of pots, utensils and chopping board with food scattered about.

PhilInt · 07/10/2022 12:13

Another vote for bar keepers friend for limescale and oven pride for no scrubbing oven cleaning.

Leftbutcameback · 07/10/2022 12:16

Like others say little and often, and take the friction out of the process. I keep the right cleaning spray and cloth in kitchen and bathroom ready for use, plus the squeegee in the shower as we have terrible limescale. I've started using the ecover spray to clean limescale off taps sinks etc. I just spray it and leave it and then wipe it off the next time I use the sink.

Hoover lives on the landing which is the place that needs hoovering most as well
It's where we have carpet. My eufy is plugged in under the sofa so I can just press the button and it does the living room every day.

With the oven when I'm waiting for the kettle to boil I give the inside of the door and the other easy access parts a quick wipe. We had the oven professionally cleaned a few weeks ago and I realised that even after using only once or twice the grease starts building up.

We also have a cleaner once a fortnight which I love!

mandolinwind · 07/10/2022 12:25

I don't like using any cleaning products in spray form but HG Limescale Remover in a bottle is far more effective than the bottles of Viakal. I use HG neat on ceramics but dilute for cleaning chrome taps and wear rubber gloves.

princesssparklepants · 07/10/2022 12:27

@Pyjamagame

My DD gives no shits about that! Haha I once black bagged an entire load of play dough and accessories because she'd asked for it out, played for 2 seconds then buggered off and left it all out.
I warned her multiple times it would be binned and she didn't care.... 🤦🏼‍♀️

Why?

Also lots of good tips here, just thought of another … maximise storage space, I have these baskets that hang on the inside of the cupboard under the kitchen sink, helps to keep cleaning products tidy

Lidl have a cheap limescale remover that's safe to use on chrome, unlike harpic black. Also plastic, ceramic, tile, everything! I spray it on the shower all over and leave it. It's easier to rinse it as well by getting in naked and hosing down the inside then carrying on with your own shower.

Use a flash floor mop to clean bathroom tiles. I'm short so can never reach up the top 🙃

This is genius! Why have I not thought of this? The top two rows of tiles are grey compared to the white of the rest of the shower/bath as I can’t reach them.

When I worked as housekeeping in a hotel we were told to do this too. One pillowcase for the bathroom. One for bedroom. One for the cups/ glasses. This was a posh hotel too.

My top tip is robot hoover for hard floors. Spray and microfibre mop means they always looks squeaky clean and takes no time.

The hotel said to clean the bathroom with a used pillow case?? Ew! I don’t like that idea.

When you change the sheets use the used pillowcases to dust the room - particularly bedside tables!

I’m imagining my entire bedroom stinking of dp’s head sweat now 🤮

@puddingandsun

You need an oven with pyrolitic cleaning setting. Oven heats up to v v high heat and everythingjust burns off. Just a tiny bit of ash to wipe away

Erm I have a ‘self cleaning’ oven but I’m too scared to do it! Once I tried and I could smell burning and turned it off. Is that what’s meant to happen? Do you leave the racks in?

Curlygirl06 · 07/10/2022 17:09

We live in a hard water area. We spray the glass door with daily shower spray then squeegy it off every time. The shower is7-8 years old and still clear, no limescale. However, where the water trickles down to where the seal is, we tend to get a line of scale there. Every week I gently rub that bit with a brillo pad, it doesn't scratch the glass and keeps it clear.

This! Clean as you go, every single time. I still training my 11 year old...

Still trying with my 45 year old DP...

Bien22 · 07/10/2022 17:28

For shower/bath cleaning, keep a dishmatic in the bathroom filled up with bathroom cleaner and use that after bath/shower 1/2 a week.

Takes a few minutes to wipe round shower and tiles, rinse off and it saves loads of scrubbing when you eventually get round to a deep clean.

Workyticket · 07/10/2022 17:43

Any tips for a non stinky washing machine?

Ran mine on an empty hot wash last week and it was better but it's not as fresh again and I don't want to keep doing that!

Door open or closed when not using it?
