Tell me your most ingenious cleaning/ time saving hacks??

Looking for some cleaning inspiration, and I love anything that saves time, or is multitasking.

If you have any tips or ideas to share?

I will go first. I use a spray mop to clean my floors each day. It takes me like 2 minutes and because I do it daily the dirt never actually builds up on the floor. I use either zoflora or fabulousa so it also makes my home smell nice.

Placemarking for when someone gives tips for cleaning the oven.

Have you tried Oven Pride oven cleaner? Literally squirt it on the oven and leave it overnight, wipe it off the next day. You also get a bag in the pack, you squirt some of the mix into the bag, throw in the oven racks and they are good as new by morning.

I am also an advocate for using a window cleaner to scrap down the shower glass.

I’m super lazy with housework so always end up having to do a deep clean. I recommend Cilit Bang Black Mould Remover for everything. It cleans grease in kitchens, woodwork such as doors as well as all the grubby black bits in bathrooms. Very strong, so leave windows open.

Also buy it in a poundshop as it £2 as opposed to nearly £4.

Rubbing linescale off taps with a 2p coin was the best tip when this thread last came up. Really works.

Put an old sock on your hand to do dusting.

Bar keepers friend. It’s literally magic in a bottle

@MissMarplesGoddaughter

'Never go up or downstairs empty handed.'

I tried this but now I've got a coffee table in the bathroom, two armchairs on the landing and a single bed and a bedside cabinet in the lounge. Oh, and a wardrobe jammed in the turn on the stairs! 😕

Re limescale I'm in a hard water area. If it is really bad / has built up for a while viakal spray is amazing. Just be careful of the surfaces and don't leave for a long time.

As a top up/maintenance white vinegar (I put in a spray bottle). Spray, wipe around and rinse works wonders. Again vinegar is corrosive so do f leave for long.

My cleaner has faded the marble in my bathroom by leaving viakal on.

yoshiblue · 07/10/2022 08:49

Definitely a shower squeezy.

Method spray and mop is good. Squeeze it on the floor then I use a microfibre mop pad to mop. Straight in the washing pile afterwards.

Would also recommend little and often mantra for cleaning so it doesn't build up. Do a room a day, like TOMM, or a few small tasks every day.

whenwillthemadnessend · 07/10/2022 08:50

I dont hoover stairs. I use one of those metal dust scrapers advertised on FB and work all the dirt down each stair and then just hoover the pile in the bottom.

I have 3 cats and a dog so this get rid of hair better and is kinder in my back.

Chelsea26 · 07/10/2022 08:54

For oven racks - stick them in the dishwasher on the highest wash - halfway through open it, take them out and rub with a wire brush - everything should be loosened and come off easily. Stick them back in for the rest of the cycle

Thighdentitycrisis · 07/10/2022 08:59

Store duvet covers inside out - easier to put them on that way

yeah, most of it’s a waste of time.

A clean house lifts my mood and makes me feel happier. An untidy, dirty house irritates me and lowers my mood. My "standards" are basic! Defo not a waste of time for me.

If your DC are little, clean the rest of the bathroom while supervising them in the bath

Introduce the 15 minute tidy rule where everyone in the house has to work together for 15 minutes tidying. Good if you are expecting visitors. Set a timer and go go go. Younger kids can put stuff away and dust.

Give your DC chores from a very young age. They can help fold washing, set the table etc very early

My toddler LOVES helping me set the table. He looks so proud carrying the forks 😂

I tidy as I go which helps a lot. I'm also a minimalist and don't allow clutter. My ADHD husband finds this a challenge as he likes hanging on to things but even he admits life is a lot easier for him when he doesn't own as much and all of his things are well stored and organised.

I'm off to IKEA tomorrow to get some more storage divider things for our wardrobe :D I may be unreasonably excited about this 😂

I've just ordered this.

The worst job in the house. I have a cat and have banned him from going upstairs to reduce the amount of hair he leaves everywhere.

Should be here tomorrow so I can try it out this weekend. 😁

I've seen this tip before and didn't get it then either, are there people who literally stand and watch the kettle while it boils? Doesn't everyone just switch it on, carry on with what your doing then make the drink?

I've seen several people do this and they are all men. Including DH.

I've got one of those - a real game-changer! So much cat hair comes out every time!

Badger1970 · 07/10/2022 09:22

I've got a cleaner who comes and does a really basic 2 hour sweep of the house. She hoovers, dusts, and cleans the bathrooms. What that does is then gives me time at the weekends to concentrate on the more thorough stuff.

Works really well for me as I was barely keeping on top of it before.

princesssparklepants · 07/10/2022 09:25

Hire a cleaner.... best thing we ever did and I would seriously cut back on other things to keep her.

Anyone have any tips on getting a 6 year old to tidy up after themselves?
The amount of times she's asked to put rubbish in the bin and not on the floor, and not leave shoes on, and tidy up toys is just getting frustrating now!

Limer · 07/10/2022 09:25

Glass oven doors - when the door is still warm after cooking, use a Brillo pad to get all the burnt fat splashes off the inside.

MassiveSalad22 · 07/10/2022 09:27

Clean the bathroom while the kids are in the bath. Obviously once they’re out of the baby years, and obviously not the bath itself.

PeloFondo · 07/10/2022 09:32

Method shower spray is great, especially the passion fruit one. I spray it after every shower

Clean it when you see it, so if you see a cobweb or dust or spill, don't leave it. TBH that's most of my cleaning BlushGrin if I see something I do it

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/10/2022 09:32

@PAFMO, a friend’s sister did just that - bought a new oven when she couldn’t face cleaning the old one! I had to admire her style.

I once paid someone to come and clean mine - it was in a right old state. Best £40-odd I ever spent. No idea what it costs now though.
