Why does next door's cat keep coming in?

ericamorgan · 06/10/2022 22:17

Next door got a cat about 18 months ago.

The car has come in about 6/7 times now. Would probably be more if we were less cautious of her

Tonight H walked in front the lounge to the kitchen, and there she was, strolling across the kitchen counter tops! As if sweet all was out of place

It shits in our garden. Our dog is scared of cats and won't go anywhere near it!

H tried to shoo it away tonight and it went for him, in the end he opened the street door and then whacked the kitchen door open. That startled her and she made a run for it out the door

What can we do to stop this? She gets through windows.

H says if she does this again or shits in our garden once more, she will regret it!

Poundland and similar sell a multi pack of mini water pistols. I have a set just for this as my cat gets horribly bullied by other cats so I often try and defend her!

blacksax · 07/10/2022 17:50

Your H sounds like a thoroughly nasty piece of work. Anybody who threatens to harm a small animal is despicable.

Absolutely. This includes any posters on here (you know whoyou are)

I get that not everyone likes cats (or dogs or other pets), but I don't understand the absolute hatred TBH.

True on the Maine coin and water. I’ve caught ours in the pool and he sun bathes on the garden furniture in the rain the daft sod. But his cute and has a really cool meow.

ThierryEnnui · 07/10/2022 20:14

Keyansier and OP’s husband sound like fucking awful people.

As someone who has had cats go missing and knows the heartache, and another one who almost died due to deliberate poisoning, this thread has really upset me.

I really hope karma treats them both with the same malice they treat innocent, loving animals with. Absolutely hideous to think people like that are out there in the world.

Joonio · 07/10/2022 20:22

You are very lucky to have been befriended by this cat.Be nice, have a snack ready and then put him out.

Would go beyond despicable. Sick and in need of help is more like it.

Wow - you are not nice at all. You would really trap someone's pet and release it far from home? Cats dont understand boundaries and homes. Yes shoo it away, have a word with the owner and ask them to contribute towards a cat deterrent or something else sensible. But that first suggestion is cruel. Oh and cats are actually clean animals and far from disgusting though of course its not nice if they do their business in people's gardens.

Not half as not okay as keyansier would be if they did anything to one of my cats.

I'd do time for it without a shred of guilt. Act like a semblance of a decent human being if your family wants you that badly.

AgapanthusandAcers · 07/10/2022 20:34

Some of the posters here are vile. I have a cat who is nervous and wouldn't go into someone's house but next door's cats used to visit us. Cats are inquisitive. Maybe humans could take sensible precautions like keeping doors and windows closed etc if they know that cat breaks in through them.

Heatherbell1978 · 07/10/2022 20:37

I have a cat who likes to visit the neighbours in our estate a lot but thankfully they've all embraced it and drop the odd photo of him lying across their sofa etc on the street WhatsApp group. I'd hate to think anyone would be horrible to him when at the end of the day he genuinely is just being friendly!

LuciferRising · 07/10/2022 20:38

You're okay with your cats randomly going into other people's houses uninvited? You might not be okay with the result if your cat randomly ventured into mine. Take care of your own cats if you want them so badly.

Hope you don't have kids. I'd be wary of anyone who could imply violence towards animals.

RampantIvy · 07/10/2022 21:13

Actually, this isn't great advice. If you feed a cat it is more likely to come back.

If you really don't want a lovely feline visitor just squirt water at it.

Soubriquet · 07/10/2022 21:19

Some cats are much more friendly than others

I have one who won’t go near strangers so I’m confident she won’t go in peoples house.

When I was a teen, next doors cat kept coming in the house. I used to have to chase it out all the time. He killed my hamster

That is so fucking weird.

Some real sick weirdos appeared on this thread!

We have a local cat, no idea whose, but it loves our house. We don't encourage it to come in (we have budgies) but it will come in if it sees an opening.
A few weeks ago we were just getting up when the cat appeared from goodness knows where. No one had seen it come in, no one had seen where it had decided to sleep, but it was very pleased with itself.

sashh · 08/10/2022 02:54

ericamorgan · 07/10/2022 12:01

No. He just hates cats.

I love them! But H won't have one or even have one visit us

And you married him?

HelpMeGetThrough · 08/10/2022 05:07

Our neighbours cat is an arrogant little bugger and has walked in a few times, to check me out when I've been working with the kitchen door open. Flat ignores me when I'm in the garden.

Arrogant little arse he is. I really quite like him.

mountainsunsets · 08/10/2022 09:07

I mean, cats don't understand property boundaries Grin

AlternativelyWired · 08/10/2022 09:12

Our neighbour's cat identifies as ours as well as having an actual home. One slept on my bed all last night and one hasn't gone to say hello yet but will do at some point today I hope. Our day is not complete without the cats.

AmeliaEarhart · 08/10/2022 10:11

We have this problem with the upstairs neighbour’s cat. It’s a vicious bugger too; will go for you if you get too close. Even its owner has said she’s worried it will attack my children (who are bloody terrified of it). I’ve been shooing it out with a broom but will be getting some water pistols. DH is severely allergic, so even if it wasn’t so aggressive we wouldn’t want it on our furniture and beds.

It’s not about being being weird, it’s about wanting to be able to breathe properly in our own home 🙄

SoupDragon · 08/10/2022 10:16

No, you aren't weird but your response is proportionate. You aren't making thinly veiled threats to injure the cat or to trap it and dump it miles away from its home. Those people are the weirdos.

Keyansier · 08/10/2022 19:33

Just because the majority of people on here likes cats doesn't mean we all have to put up with them to accommodate you having a pet. They are your pets, not everybody else's. I don't see how I'm being called horrible for not wanting cats in my garden - if I wanted cats then I would buy some myself. Keep your cats indoors, it's not hard. If you can't control them getting out of your garden then install some sort of anti-cat climbing equipment so they can't get out, or attach leads to their collars and keep a grip on it when they are let outside so they literally can't escape. Sick to death of irresponsible and selfish cat owners.

Bestcatmum · 08/10/2022 19:36

My neighbours cat does this. She wants to be my cats BFF but my cats have hysterics and spray in the bedroom.
I have no idea what to do.

I'm not sure what you expect me to make of this response? You're saying you would do jail time for a cat. And then in the next sentence advising people should act like decent human beings...

Well, if you think people should be more careful of their cats if they don't want some thing to harm them when they are unfortunate enough to encounter you, the same logic applies to you. You should be more careful about your wish to be harming animals in case you're encounter somebody who thinks a cat is not something to be beaten to death with a stick or stolen and dumped where they will die - and would be prepared to give you similar treatment.

An appropriate phrase would possibly be 'those who live by the sword die by the sword'. Behave yourself and don't harm animals (effectively pretending to be a decent human being, as it were) and you'll be fine.
