Why does next door's cat keep coming in?

ericamorgan · 06/10/2022 22:17

Next door got a cat about 18 months ago.

The car has come in about 6/7 times now. Would probably be more if we were less cautious of her

Tonight H walked in front the lounge to the kitchen, and there she was, strolling across the kitchen counter tops! As if sweet all was out of place

It shits in our garden. Our dog is scared of cats and won't go anywhere near it!

H tried to shoo it away tonight and it went for him, in the end he opened the street door and then whacked the kitchen door open. That startled her and she made a run for it out the door

What can we do to stop this? She gets through windows.

H says if she does this again or shits in our garden once more, she will regret it!

Let's put Keyansier in a cage and release them in the middle of nowhere Grin
Next door's cat comes into our garden when their grandchildren visit. Luckily I love cats and this cat is just adorable and loves having a fuss made of her.

Being realistic, cats are nosy and do like to wander where they aren't wanted so the only way to stop them is to use a humane and harmless way of scaring them off - noise and/or water, and to take steps to make sure they can't come into the house, so leave the window on the latch to get ventialtion rather than have it wide open.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/10/2022 09:26

Water pistol. A powerful one. Keep a couple filled and handy in the house.
If it’s in the garden and you can make it in time, a powerful squirt with a hose.
I’ve had cats and have loved them, but don’t want any in the garden now. We encourage the birds, so any cat lurking in the hope of a feathered catch either gets loudly shooed away, or gets the water treatment.

Wbeezer · 07/10/2022 09:35

Cats are really scared yg the hissing sound of aerosols, the best to use is a van of compressed air as sold for blowing dust out of computer cases (buy in computer store or from amazon) they won't hurt your cat or furnishing and you don't need good aim but the cat will scarper (to them it sounds like a snake attacking apparently).
Noise detterants will probably upset your dog.

Sorry about typos, cracked screen, "can"of compressed air not "van", one should be enough.

If my neighbours said my cat was doing that I would tell them to spray it with water. We've done this for a cat that kept coming into our garden and attacking our cat (dh bought a supersoaker!) and the same when we moved house and there was a cat that clearly had been using our garden and so saw our cat as in its territory. It worked both times, cats hate getting wet.

HandbagAtDawn · 07/10/2022 10:02

What kind of cat is it? My parents have the same issue. A couple moved across the road from them a few years ago, bringing their cat with them. Now the cat spends all its time over at my parents' house. They don't feed it or encourage it and they kick it out at night so that it has to go home. But every day it comes back.

The cat is a Maine coon and apparently it's quite common behaviour for that breed.

OhmygodDont · 07/10/2022 10:07

Mainecoon will they are soppy people cats. Mine couldn’t jump a fence mind to get in anyones house.

spray it with water op, make sure you constantly shoo it out if it comes in give a cat and inch and it will take miles.

HandbagAtDawn · 07/10/2022 10:24

Off topic, but I bloody love Maine coons. I wish I could have one, but DH says they're too floofy.

Shoo it, spray with water, make a loud noise. You can get cat deterrents for the garden.

Your partner sounds an aggressive arse.

Cats don’t understand property.

Trapping it and releasing it away from its home is extremely cruel overreaction and I’m reporting that post.

Water spray. Not talking about blasting it with an industrial karchar. Get a spray bottle, fill with clean water, then spray at the cat when it comes in house or garden. You don't need to drown it, just a slight spray it its direction. It'll s

You're okay with your cats randomly going into other people's houses uninvited? You might not be okay with the result if your cat randomly ventured into mine. Take care of your own cats if you want them so badly.

Wow - you are not nice at all. You would really trap someone's pet and release it far from home? Cats dont understand boundaries and homes. Yes shoo it away, have a word with the owner and ask them to contribute towards a cat deterrent or something else sensible. But that first suggestion is cruel. Oh and cats are actually clean animals and far from disgusting though of course its not nice if they do their business in people's gardens.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 07/10/2022 10:53

...sorry hit send. It'll leave quick. Keep doing it and it'll get the message. It's worked for me every time. It'll associate your house and garden with that spray and not return. I love cats btw. I'd be feeding it haha. I'm terrible.

Babdoc · 07/10/2022 10:54

A water pistol will deter most cats, but Maine Coons love water. DD’s one will get in the bath with her and have a play splash fight! They often find her roosting in the bathroom wash basin.

basilmint · 07/10/2022 10:55

My old cat was once found curled up on a neighbour's bed. Very embarrassing. Cats do like to wander where they please. This one sounds particularly brazen if it is not put off by the dog. I also suggest water pistols.

You need help.

@Keyansier - this poster has said a few strange things before. Being cruel and unnecessarily cruel towards a cat (which you can't really stop from going to different places) is uncalled for, in my opinion.

louderthan · 07/10/2022 10:58

Does your DH have a history of violence against defenceless innocent animals? That comment would really worry me.

So would you beat the cat with a broom handle or trap and release it miles away from it's home?

Just the first two options rather than finding the owners and talking to them about the problem.

I love them! But H won't have one or even have one visit us

Ithoughtthiswastherehearsal · 07/10/2022 12:25

I have cats. I adore them.

You need a few water pistols lying around and basically shoot water at the cat whenever it comes in 😬

Basically a cat will expand its territory (aka hunting ground) as far as it can, and only stop when it meets something it doesn’t like, usually another cat who’ll fight to defend its territory, or sometimes a dog. It won’t stop just because humans are there, it sees them as irrelevant / potential servants.

It will stop if it decides the territory is dangerous. I stopped a regular visitor by trapping the trespasser in my house for a few mins and throwing water at it. Cats hate feeling trapped, it didn’t come back. (And before anyone tells me off, the cat I trapped kept attacking my kitten and had cost me a £2k vet bill so I needed it gone!!)

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/10/2022 12:28

Can you latch your windows open so the cat can’t get through?

I hope your husband isn’t intending to do the cat any harm.

TonTonMacoute · 07/10/2022 13:07

Water pistols - or get a dog that isn't such a wuss!
