What was your nicest commute to work?

I used to cycle through rice fields, get a rickety old tram, then walk through a bonsai nursery. Took 40 minutes. japan.

current commute is a 30 minute walk along a seafront….lovely in the summer. Bit challenging in a gale.

Walking along the sea front in the morning was always lovely & a great start to the day. I used to set off early some mornings so I could get a coffee and just enjoy the peacefulness. The fresh sea air really woke you up!
It was a 40 min walk. Used to see the same joggers or early dog walkers most days.

Not so lovely in Winter though but I’d just get the bus if it was particularly cold/wet/windy.

For 3 years I had a job that was a 10-15 minute walk from my house. I loved that job anyway and have very fond memories of walking to work in the sunshine, feeling happy.

The walk from my bedroom to the spare room/office. Via the kitchen for breakfast first.

No. 17 bus from Caledonian Rd to St Paul's. Not sure why I liked it. Usually got a seat on top deck and wiping the foggy windows to see what was happening outside. Maybe just a point in life where I was very happy?

Also Hong Kong, finishing work, ambling along the walkway to the station. Sea air, roar of traffic, neon lights beginning to flicker on, anticipation of a tasty restaurant dinner. Shouting out to the minibus driver to let me off at my stop.

Best commute in London was when I worked in Victoria, right by the station. I did a 9 minute train (always with a seat) and then virtually fell into the Nova building.

Best commute for actual loveliness was when I lived in Jersey and walked along the sea to work.

My commute now (when I go in) is not lovely in either of these ways!

Southampton to Hythe and back. Ferry across Southampton water and a little train down the pier. I used to pass by the famous cruise ships and enjoy sunrise and sunset over the sea.

I spent 4 months in Jersey and absolutely loved my commute to work along the seafront. It was so relaxing.

Not commute but our walk to school

What was your nicest commute to work?
Heyahun · 06/10/2022 14:17

I cycle through the wetlands and over the canal every morning with my toddler on the back of my bike (she commutes with me as her nursery is near to my office) it’s lovely

WeneedSamVimesonthecase · 06/10/2022 14:18

I used to have a job where I could walk across Regents Park to the office, that was lovely. Second favourite was the bus from Chalk Farm to Waterloo, as I loved crossing the Thames.

Oooh gosh!

I used to live in Bangkok and my commute was on a river commute boat. I'd get on around 7 am, get into work and then have breakfast of chilli spicy noodles. Home around 4 pm.

I also lived in a country that was very cold and snowy and had a 40 minute commute by foot. Sometimes stopping for breakfast which was a kiosk meal of white bread, cheese and sausage with a coffee (and on the weekends (I worked saturdays) of a little glass of brandy.

Now I commute mostly from jy bedroom to the dining room. But days in the office I drive 40 minutes across the moor.

Walking along the Thames and over Tower Bridge in London

Fast ferry from Manly across Sydney harbour. The beer on the way home on a Friday meant the weekend had begun. And we used to occasionally see whales!

BarrelOfOtters · 06/10/2022 14:54

Loving the London commute comments - I go to London a lot and always wonder what it would be like to work there and walk over Tower Bridge to work.

And Sydney to Manly - jealous.

I loved Bangkok visiting it and it must be amazing to get to know it well.

I live in NYC, at a previous job, I took a route which involved the subway going overground for a bit and got a spectacular view of the NYC skyline. When I got off, I walked from Grand Central to my office. I used to either come out through an art-deco tunnel or walk through the main train hall and it was magical, especially at Christmas.

Ferry across Sydney harbour, complete with close ups of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. I miss it!

CoralBells · 06/10/2022 16:40

I used to drive over Hampton Court Bridge and it was nice seeing Hampton Court Palace.

CoralBells · 06/10/2022 16:40

I also used to drive through Richmond Park which was nice

Kenwouldmixitup · 06/10/2022 16:43

So long as I can walk to work, it will always be the best commute. Have chosen the walk over promotion in the past.

shumway · 06/10/2022 16:46

Very jealous of lots of these.

EndlessMagpies · 06/10/2022 17:10

I used to work in the accounting software industry, and for one blissful summer fortnight I was seconded to a stately home, where my commute was up a very long drive towards the (very well known) house through the deer park.

Right? Super lovely to start and end the day that way!

Commuting to my hospital in Perthshire, on a country road through the Sidlaw hills, with stunning views to the south right over the Tay valley, and north across to the Cairngorm mountains. The roadside verges were thick with campions in the spring, dog roses in summer and yellow gorse all year round. The road wound up a 1 in 5 hill through woodland, with overhanging beech trees at one point, and glorious autumn colour.

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/10/2022 19:57

Rollerblading along the seafront promenade. I miss the sea. Xxx
