A 1980s dinner party and do people still have them?

So I was reminiscing with my sister earlier.

Growing up in the 80s, our parents would host "proper" dinner parties.

The table would be set, prior to dinner, drinks and nibbles would be provided in the living room, a three course dinner would be served in the dining room, then afterwards more drinks would be served in the living room...brandies and whisky I presume.

The men would wear suits, children would be sent to bed or left with babysitters.

Do people still do this nowadays? When we get together with friends now, the whole evening is so informal in comparison. My parents dinner parties seem very grown up in comparison!

So just wondering if people still have "proper" dinner parties? Is it just very posh people or is it stuck firmly in the past?!

They wouldn’t be dinner parties. They’d be Candlelight Suppers. 😂

We used to do this in the 90s when were were 20 somethings- it wasn't formal dinner though. We would take it in turns with friends to host and cook two or three courses- always nibbles followed by things like lasagne, chicken breast in parma ham, fajhitas, chilli, curry or pasta dishes followed by dessert. Always washed down with lots of wine and then we would play board games in teams like articulate, trivial pursuit or that one where you stick bits of paper on your forehead and have to guess who you are. Was fun!

Now I just have the inlaws round for tea occasionally Hmm

We wouldn't invite 'Hyacinth Bucket types' only those that know how to have a good laugh over good food and wine.

We regularly entertain friends for dinner. It the only time we use our dining room. Or we go to friends for dinner (which I prefer because it’s less work for me🤷‍♀️). Canapés & cocktails/champagne, and then 3 course meal which is usually something different (but not too difficult) and cheese to finish. We all dress nicely but no men wear suits. Always sit alternate man and woman.
There’s always far too much wine drank and often music and dancing after dinner. And always lots of laughs, which is why we do it. But tbh the hangovers these days make me wonder if it’s worth it 😩

I'm 27 and me and my partner used to do this with two other couple friends every few months. We'd make a three course meal, drinks and play board games. We didn't wear fancy clothes though just normal stuff.

Sadly it came to an end as both other couples broke up.
