After going round the shops today I was serisouly tempted to start buying Christmas presents but as I don't have much storage space decided against it it got me thinking
When do you start buying??

OP posts:
BakewellGin1 · 02/10/2022 19:39

I've finished shopping for youngest DS (3)
Started August

Got oldest a PlayStation 5 as I don't want to end up without one... Need to get the rest of his presents - hopefully by mid November.

Then I buy Parents/Grandparent, Sister and DH end of November.

indecisivewoman81 · 02/10/2022 19:40

I've already started too. I have an empty suitcase in the list and have started filling it up with bits when I see them in the sale.

indecisivewoman81 · 02/10/2022 19:40

*loft not list

August/Sept if I see things I like. It’s annoying storing things though so not too much.

MooseBreath · 02/10/2022 19:52

I start October 1st so I can spread the cost over 3 months.

adriftabroad · 02/10/2022 20:01

Knew I would have no money in the winter.
Bought everything in summer sales and finished.
I got 100 euros worth of Body Shop stuff for 40, for example, with postage included.
DD is 14 and I concentrate on a really nice stocking and a few main fun presents. Also in the sales at at least 50% off. All online.

All done!

Food is going up weekly in Spain, might buy the Christmas chocolate now too, bit by bit (and booze for me)

reluctantbrit · 02/10/2022 20:25

Around mid-November. DD does her list after half-term/mid November and as taste is changing so much or now, being a teen, she is very particular what she likes, there is no point in doing it any earlier.

I may browse, especially for my mum, and add several things to an Amazon wishlist for inspiration.

It's all part of the Christmas season for me, it's far too early at the moment to even think about it. I prefer putting money aside instead of buying now.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 02/10/2022 20:34

All year. We store in loft.
If i see something i get it. Then when they write their lists i just order that then done.

I brought ds nearly 3s main present for this Xmas in July 2021! As was a bargain. But he was too young for it then. And hes not the age he asks for stuff and i know hell love it.

Ive done 80% of my shopping already

Ell95 · 02/10/2022 20:41

I start saving in august £10/£20 per week and finish a few weeks before Christmas and get whatever I can then

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/10/2022 20:45

I've written lists Xmas Grin

I'll go to Costco next weekend
In November I'll go shopping on a NWD to get the things I don't buy online
Then look for Pyjamas, robes, socks and underwear for the Dec 1st bags

DS wants money which is fine by us , he gets the Dec 1st Bag as "things"
DD does a list and we'll gi shopping in December .
(My DC are 20 and nearly 23 )

Minniebojangles · 02/10/2022 20:46

With all the postal strikes due I'm buying everything that has to be ordered online now.

MrsArrDee · 02/10/2022 20:55

As early as possible! I've got most of DDs stocking fillers and a couple of presents for her. Got a fair few other bits for nieces and nephews, so I'm feeling quite organised.

I like to be done by mid November, and have everything wrapped up and ready to give, takes the pressure off financially as well.

Tiredmum100 · 02/10/2022 21:04

Yesterday, I bought the dc a pack of new boxers in next each. That's it so far! I like to start around now, as I also have a lot of birthdays coming up between now and December. Its always an expensive time of year for me! I really need to write of who I'm buying for and what.

Elerandooo · 02/10/2022 21:41

Finished mine. Not usually this on the ball but had extra cash recently so just got everything with that.

Just need to try and refrain from buying any more between now and Christmas!

postcardpuffin · 02/10/2022 23:00

I do it throughout the year, both for cost reasons and because I feel less stressed about it the earlier I get it done. Also I tend to visit family in the October half term but not again until New Year, so I try to take as much with me in October as I can.

I’ve already got most done. Saw a big HP Lego set that DD wants earlier in the year when there was a good discount. Have also got her some board games (Cluedo, Throw Throw Burrito), Posca pens, a bedroom LED glitter lamp, various bits and pieces, pretty much all the stocking items, and some Christmas clothes. She may get another couple of things but I’ll wait and see nearer the time. Still have a couple of things to get for DP.

Aside from that, I have pretty much everything for: the rest of my family presents, the couple of friends I usually buy for, little token gifts for a few of DD’s best friends, office secret Santa, and the teachers/TAs. I have maybe one or two things to get from Amazon for my mum and dad, but that’s easily sorted.

I’ve also checked my card/wrap/gift tag stash, and I stocked up last year so don’t need to buy any this year. Ditto tree and house decs.

I’ll start buying things like wine, biscuits for cheese and cranberry sauce/chutney jars soon, just to spend the cost of the final food shop.

I always have a frantic busy period in work in late November-mid December, and I know from experience that if I don’t get most of it done before then, I’ll leave myself not enough time in mid-December and will get really stressed by it all!

I no longer do MIL, either, thank the Lord — that’s DP’s job now! I draw the line at buying nice thoughtful expensive stuff that MIL will like, and then getting back some random charity shop or regifted tat that I’ll never use. Sometimes I just get DP to tell MIL to buy me a £5 box of Ferrero Rocher and that’s an ideal solution — I like them, MIL can get them in Tesco, wins all round 😂

(For anyone of the “you should be grateful for any gift you don’t give to receive” lecturing tendency, yes I would normally agree with you; but the year I got used rubber car floor mats from MIL for Christmas nearly broke me 🤣😩)

ItisallPooh · 02/10/2022 23:14

I've usually started by now but my kids have no clue what they want apart from certain big items that they are definitely not going to get! She

WithIcePlease · 02/10/2022 23:15

Pretty much done Xmas shopping apart from a piece of tech I'm waiting for Black Friday for
Reasons:
cba with stress in December
I buy when I see stuff they'd like - for DH 2 framed photographs of an area we love in June at a little street fair
I buy stuff on offer whatever time of year eg some CK stuff in a January sale
I buy on holiday stuff that I don't see in shops in uk
Some stuff may sell out in sizes I want eg a warm dressing gown I saw last week when it had turned suddenly cold and could well have gone in a size small by November

Overall, it's simply less of a stress spreading it out

And I got so fed up of wrapping that a few years ago I went out just after Xmas and bought tons of gift bags on sale which are reused within our part of the family

TheSimpleLife88 · 02/10/2022 23:17

Not until December. Usually two weeks before Xmas, sometimes Christmas Eve 😂
I'm actually a very organized person, but I like doing the Christmas shopping when it's actually Christmas so I get really excited and then wrap the presents on Christmas Eve.

lavenderfine · 03/10/2022 07:26

I've started for my kids and DH. Not extended family yet. I usually buy through the year for the kids when I see bargains and stuff I know they'll like!

ilovetea14 · 03/10/2022 09:05

I'm finished start early as have 15 neices and nephews most of them get money so put money away in January.

Also do Kris kindle in both family's and have inlaws and parents to buy for and few friends. Also have two DC.

Then from October till December have 10 birthdays 4 are in December. That's why I start early to spread the cost. Then I can relax and enjoy December I love Christmas.

ChocolateCrepe · 03/10/2022 09:32

I’ve started
We have 4 DC so I usually start in September once they’re back at school
I put money into a separate account all year round though, I don’t know how people afford it out of one or two months wages!

Mrsfussypants1 · 03/10/2022 10:32

I've just got consumables left on my list to buy and a couple of gift cards. I buy all year when I see and generally not without a promo code or discount hunted down first. I've got good storage and no small dc at home now to go spoaching. I've even bought dhs present, he's the hardest to buy for, usually bought mid December wondering if it will arrive in time. I've bought him an Ororo heated golf jacket, found a promo code to save £50 off, heck I've even bought his annual Christmas socks already which are another gift I buy last minute and I'm left with little choice. Haven't sorted food out yet, still hovering on an M&S food order, first year I've not booked it straight away as I've not been that impressed with the offerings this year.

TheTeddyBears · 03/10/2022 12:59

I start buying when I see something. Sometimes I might even buy a few bits in January sales and put them away (although this isn't something I do regularly). I'd say I usually start buying in from August time. I also have a load of family birthdays oct-Dec which is really annoying! We have a large floored loft space so it goes there.

whattodo2019 · 03/10/2022 20:35

I started last week as I went to an Early Christmas Fair. I managed to get god daughters pressies, stocking fillers and even a Christmas Pud!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/10/2022 21:35

Bought DS dressing gown.

Another tick on the list Xmas Grin
