After going round the shops today I was serisouly tempted to start buying Christmas presents but as I don't have much storage space decided against it it got me thinking
When do you start buying??

After Halloween.

Ilovetocrochet · 02/10/2022 17:16

I’m so grateful that my children are now adults and are happy to receive money with a token gift to open on Christmas Day. I do something similar for all family members I buy for, I get each couple a voucher for a shop that they choose ie John Lewis, M&S or Amazon together with an individual token present. That way they get a decent amount to treat them selves to something.

I struggle to go shopping as I cannot walk very far due to arthritis so tend to get the token presents on line from the same shop, last year from Lakeland but have not yet decided for this year. Saves on postage getting them from in one order!

I might go for edible presents this year or possibly see what John Lewis have in.

I usually just start mid December and smash it out in a day or two. It doesn't take that long, esp online.

August…
And I hide it all in a locked suitcase 😁

I have a locked suitcase too on the top of my wardrobe 😂

LaTangerina · 02/10/2022 17:24

I actually started end of December after Xmas last year but just for smaller stocking fillers.
I'm almost done shopping for one child now & half done for the older two.
Usually I'd start around October though. It depends what I see though & most stuff bought early is discounted sale stuff.
I just put everything on top of my wardrobe & in a few drawers.

LaTangerina · 02/10/2022 17:25

I really enjoy shopping though so perhaps look on shopping sites more than most.

AuntieMarys · 02/10/2022 17:27

I've started but I don't need storage as I only buy for 3 people.

coldcaff · 02/10/2022 17:29

Generally around now, although if I see something earlier in the year I'll buy it. We do struggle for storage space though. Every year I say I want to be finished by December- everything wrapped, cards written etc. December is always so busy (several family birthdays, school plays, dance show, works parties, panto, visiting Santa....) that there's just no time for shopping.

grayhairdontcare · 02/10/2022 17:30

All presents bought by end of September.
Christmas dinner is also ordered from M&S.
Treats and booze are bought and stashed.
I can now enjoy the festivities without the hassle

Mamiamamia · 02/10/2022 17:32

I have done all mine already (started beginning of Sep) I noticed the prices of everything rising (e.g Lego car DS wanted was £125, had gone up to £139 everywhere by mid sep and now is at £159 every where - I managed to get one bnib on eBay for £117). Everything that I have purchased has since gone up in price by at least 15%!

This is a brilliant idea. I'd never thought of that!

dontgobaconmyheart · 02/10/2022 17:46

Whenever really. If I see something that's perfect for someone then I buy it and put it away but only if I know the person well enough that I know they'd be likely to want it in however many months off Christmas is.

I happened to see a couple of things last weekend (including for the dog!), bought them and put them away, so I suppose technically have 'started' but I don't buy for many people at all and never buy Christmas themed things or those curated Christmas gift sets of toiletries etc so there's no real need to wait for those to fill the shelves. I'd not want to receive them so don't buy them.

Other than the dog 😆- I only do a gift swap with one close friend, my DP and mygod son/daughter who I will see over the festive season. I'll do a small hamper of biscuits and M&S bits for our elderly neighbour who seems to be alone a lot as usual and that's all.

CandyCaneLane0 · 02/10/2022 17:47

Usually May/June I start buying for family but started later this year due to moving house. I usually leave ds's til closer to Christmas

RedToothBrush · 02/10/2022 17:53

I'll pick up stuff if I see it during the year, but I have a schedule of places I start to get stuff from that starts in August.

I like to be done and dusted by December.

Inclinedtochatter · 02/10/2022 18:04

Not until December I put money aside each month so I can afford it. Crap at wrapping gifts though. I've been known to do them Christmas morning before visiting family!

DappledThings · 02/10/2022 18:12

Advent. It pisses me off and stresses me out in equal measure seeing anything Christmas related in the shops before Advent has started.

Cannot be arsed thinking about it until it's actually the season.

Rtmhwales · 02/10/2022 18:29

My mum did all of hers yesterday. Mine generally throughout October and November waiting for specific sales.

Discodreams · 02/10/2022 18:32

Usually on September when the kids go back to school (4 dc, plus 7 family birthdays between Nov-Feb), but this year I’m leaving it until November. Partly because they are older so they are becoming very particular about what they ask for. Thought I’d just wait for the lists then Amazon prime it in one go

LegoFiends · 02/10/2022 18:33

January sales for things that don’t take up much space

Around about now, then in earnest after half term, so start of November.
Last few years I've tried to be done by December first in case of getting hit by Covid.

OddshoesOddsocks · 02/10/2022 18:59

All our birthdays are the first half of the year so after dd2’s birthday at the end of July I start thinking about it. It ramps up mid September and I like to be done by mid November. We’ve got a long buying list and I just can’t afford to do it all at once (or be trusted to save!)

MrsJBaptiste · 02/10/2022 19:02

December.

Surely if you buy anything before then, the recipients may have gone off things by the time Christmas arrives?

I don't think anyone in our family changes their mind on what they like.
Maybe for younger DC when something is a passing interest, but the older they get the more consistent interests and tastes are.

Riverlee · 02/10/2022 19:17

Started buying bits and pieces if I see them on offer.
