Says the Chair of the Conservative party, Jake Berry. That this is the Tory approach.

What a tool.

@TimBoothseyes How will he bu sandwiches for lunch once all the supermarket staff have quit for higher-paid jobs?

Good point, also I'm not sure how he'll even get to "work". Taxi?...all the drivers left for better paid work, drive?...all the petrol garage staff have left.....hmmmm not sure he's fully thought out what that would mean to him and all those "better paid" people has he?

Inghean2 · 02/10/2022 13:44

So what should those of us who cannot work do then? Just die?

Sad Sad

Singleandproud · 02/10/2022 13:45

It's what I've had to do, it's meant my school has lost an experienced member of staff and I've had to leave a job I enjoyed for a decade and a staff team I love. If, and it's a big if, I'm replaced it'll be by someone on an apprenticeship without experience and that is paid peanuts and who will probably move on soon.

paintitallover · 02/10/2022 13:45

I'm sure you would, if only they'd stop talking about holding down the wage bill.

Raidtheice · 02/10/2022 13:45

FictionalCharacter · 02/10/2022 13:41

This really is how they think.
Just get a job! Because they don't understand how people can be unemployed.
Just get a better paid job! Because they themselves could.
Just work more hours! Because they find it incomprehensible that people can be working brutally long hours but still not earning much.
Just cut down! Because they live lavish lifestyles and could cut down a lot if they wanted, and will never have to consider living in a cold house or skipping meals.

And if they're accused of being out of touch, they deny it and act all hurt.

Who was the one in the 80s who told people to go to where the jobs are?

Yeh, I'll just go to the SE where I can't even afford to rent a car for a week let alone a house for a month. And by some miracle find a job to pay for it all. 🙄

TimBoothseyes · 02/10/2022 13:46

Who was the one in the 80s who told people to go to where the jobs are?

That was Norman Tebbitt, a favourite of Thatcher's

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/10/2022 13:46

How about he forces companies to pay people a good days pay for a hard days work rather that telling people to get a better job. That's all it comes down to.

Nah you can go to the workhouse or the glue factory. Or send to Rwanada probably.

Quitelikeit · 02/10/2022 13:38

Why is it such a big deal that he is suggesting if people need more cash they should work more or get a different job?

some people are in that position? Just because people on this thread are not in that position so what?

i know many people who work part time and could increase their hours

Because it feels like yet another kick in the teeth for many.

Personally, I have had my fill over the years of people telling me I should have worked harder at school, should have pushed myself to keep studying post 16, should have strived to go to uni and had ambition. That i should study now in my 40s to better myself, with no thought to what my actual life is like and the fact there may be barriers to doing that.

No matter that actually, I had terrible things happen to me that stopped me doing those things - I am told I should have over come them and that it’s all my fault that I didn’t/don’t.

Statements like that make people like me feel even more shit. And believe me, after 12 hours of cleaning up bodily fluids and being treated like shit and looked down on for peanuts, it makes you wonder why you bother at all.

Essentially, yes! Thus reducing the benefits and pensions bills. The essence of Conservatism as practised by this shower (tho not by all ‘old style’ Conservatives) is that those who are ‘economically inactive’ are worthless and therefore a drain on everyone else.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/10/2022 13:49

FFS - well on that basis nurses, early career teachers, carers, food delivery drivers, teaching assistants, paramedics, police etc should all immediately leave their jobs and do something easier and better paid.

Unfortunately, they are.

Excellent point about minimum wage.

I guess we could all become prime minister too, that seems to be a job with extremely low entry requirements. High turnover means it'll be coming up again soon.

<applauds>

How is the government going to deliver effective public services (which he says is an expectation) when he has just told public sector workers to quit and do something else?

But we won't need a public sector when we have our amazing high paid jobs, we can just send our kids to private school, send Granny to take in the air on a cruise and lock our mentally ill relatives in the west wing of the mansion because we will all be soooooo rich.

@noblegiraffe I wish we could give people awards for comments, like on Reddit. Here, have my upvote and a gold 😎

He said so either cut consumption or get a better paid job. This really is the only two choices. If getting a higher paid job or working more hours isn’t feasible. Then cutting consumption down is the only other viable option.

I don’t understand why folks are kicking off, I suspect it’s because the op wrote this in a goady manner because he didn’t say if you can’t pay get a better paid job he said you either cut consumption or uou get a better paid job. Factually this is correct and if you cannot do the latter then you need to do the former. It’s hardly ground breaking stuff.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/10/2022 13:52

If the excerpt of transcript posted by janglybeads is accurate the thread title is a gross and cynical misrepresentation of what he said, bordering on shameful.

Who will do all the cleaning at the private school once all the cleaners have left for better jobs?

Kisskiss · 02/10/2022 13:53

You’ve misquoted him based on that transcript.. he says to pay higher bills you either need to consume less or earn more. Is that not true?
Yes it’s blase and tone deaf saying go get a new job as if new jobs grow on trees.. but really what other way is there to have more leftover at the end of each month.. except earn more or spend less?

Minimum wages needs to rise to approximately £14 per hour to keep up with the price increases in rent, utilities etc

but low be hide the poor should have enough to keep the wolf from the door

NMW rise would have a large saving on working benefits

"People know that when their bills arrive, they can either cut their consumption or they can get a higher salary, higher wages, go out there and get that new job.
That’s the approach the government is taking"

So he didn't suggest that people who can't pay their bills should get a better paid job?

@RedWingBoots you are very rude, maybe you’re the ignorant , thick one if you have to resort to insults because you can’t verbalise your opinion

JJsdadisatwat · 02/10/2022 13:59

What people forget is that for many people, there is no consuming less or cutting down.

I could weep sometimes when I read tips on cutting back.

It’s like people don’t realise that there were others only paying bills in the first place. Using minimal heating, budgeting every penny, no luxuries, no trips out, no hair cuts, everything essential (basics for children only, really), from charity shops or ebay in the first place.

What do you do when you were consuming the bare minimum in the first place?

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 02/10/2022 13:59

Ha, this is the tip of the iceberg. Loads of jobs in hospitality etc will be going soon. I was in the lakes recently and an extremely popular pub had closed off the upstairs due to lack of customers and the downstairs was half empty. This was on a Saturday and it's pretty much unheard of to walk straight into anywhere decent at 5pm in Central lakes. People will be buying less and spending less on leisure time. All those workers will not only be unable to pay their utility bills but they'll be relying on benefits too. We are fucked.
