Electric blanket - worth it?

Wowzers12 · 01/10/2022 12:41

Saw on tv this morning that an electric blanket only costs 5p an hour which saves on heating.

Does anyone use one and can recommend a good one? When using do you feel you can live without the heating on?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best electric blanket page with loads of great options you can buy now that are loved by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Smile

I have an underblanket on the bed and an incredibly cosy fleece heated throw for the lounge. Have been using them for at least a decade and never had anything remotely approaching an incident or the electrics failing. I've only replaced because, like anything, the fabric wears over time and washing etc.

Worth every penny and recommend to anyone.

@silentpool I've got mine connected to a smart plug so I can be super lazy and switch it on with alexa or my phone before bed time...total game changer!

Love this combo

Stupid question no doubt, but where is the plug bit on the actual blanket supposed to go so it's not uncomfortable? Not the switch/control, but where it meets the blanket. Under the pillow?

I've read on here that the heated throws have a tendency to go "pop", and once they're broken that's it. It's the only reason I haven't invested in one! I do have an electric blanket for DDs bed and she absolutely loves it.

My heated throw is now in its 4th year and hasn’t gone pop yet. I love it - can avoid putting the heating on a lot of the time.

Its a Dreamland faux fur throw. Not the cheapest on the market, but one of the best things I’ve spent money on. If you buy it with Lakeland then you get a three year warranty.

IronCandle · 04/10/2022 13:50

I started a thread the other day about a dreamland heated throw my husband had bought. We’re so disappointed with it. It barely gets lukewarm on the highest number.

That sounds unusual - how long ago did you buy it? I’d contact Dreamland to see if you can get a replacement.

IronCandle · 04/10/2022 14:24

Yes I think that’s what we’ll do.

SkirridHill · 04/10/2022 19:23

@Furries I wish I'd gone for it now! I don't really want to buy one at the moment as I know the price of them is a bit high - I bought all our winter stuff in the summer!

redbigbananafeet · 04/10/2022 19:25

Wow, can anyone recommend a king/superking one? X

Suzi888 · 04/10/2022 19:27

We’ve always had electric blankets. They’re amazing. Heat the bed then turn off when you get in or leave on low all night. Get dual controlled if your a cold mortal but your other half likes it cool…

This year I bought a heated throw- also fantastic. I work from home and it’s silly heating the entire house constantly.

PreferAnimals · 04/10/2022 20:59

Looooove mine. I have a heated throw for my sofa and an electric blanket for my bed. I can tolerate the heating being on a lot less by using them. Love snuggling under mine on the sofa of an eve. 💯 worth getting!

StillMedusa · 04/10/2022 22:46

I'm under my Dreamland heated throw right now... don't need the heating on. I'll take it to bed with me when the weather gets colder.
AND you can machine wash it which blows my mind! I couldn't be without mine now... I have no doubt it saves a fortune in heating!

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 04/10/2022 22:55

I’d rather get into bed cold and warm up, and if that doesn’t work I just get the hot water bottle to give my body a little nudge.

hamsterchump · 04/10/2022 23:08

Electric blankets are amazing, I pity those who haven't discovered them yet. I love mine, it's a Dreamland Intelliheat one with dual controls that I got for £7 secondhand on Facebook marketplace.

I put mine on the highest setting before I go in the bathroom before bed so it's only on for about 10 minutes and when you get in it's so toasty it gives you that feeling of all your muscles relaxing like you get in a hot bath before you get too hot and have to drape a cold flannel over your face.

It's great, I much prefer a cool room and warm bed.

TheRubyRedshoes · 04/10/2022 23:17

Yes .
Amazing.

We have heated throws but I'm also not ruling out under electric one's either.

TheRubyRedshoes · 04/10/2022 23:18

They are so cheap to run.

Expensive outlay.

Happycow · 04/10/2022 23:21

Oh god yes! Ive had an underblanket on the bed for years, wouldnt be without it know. Even the kids love it so i night get them one each this year.

Last winter i also got an overblanket for when im WFH or on the sofa in the evenings, best investment of the year!

OneFootintheRave · 04/10/2022 23:21

I don't live in UK anymore but grew up there and also lived in Eastern Europe.

My leccy blankets were amazing. Bedtime was a delight. You can have them in a timer and turn them off as soon as you get in. So toasty you drop off immediately.

charabang · 04/10/2022 23:23

I love my electric blanket. It doesn't need to be on for long to givr you that lovely cosy feel as you slip between the sheets. Definitely worth the outlay.

Custardpudding · 04/10/2022 23:34

Love my dreamland heated throw (Argos £60) I wrap it round me to work to save heating the whole house. Lovely and snuggly snd fluffy. I use it on the sofa too watching tele. I’m not bothered about an electric blanket on a bed and think the fleece more useful. Warm as toast.

Cenosillicaphobia · 04/10/2022 23:47

My husband bought me a heated throw for Christmas last year. I absolutely love it.

unitywardrobe · 04/10/2022 23:55

I'm a recent convert to heated throws and so far, I've not needed to put the heating on at all. We curl up at night on the sofa and half the time it gets too hot, so it has to be turned off. I'll see how things go as it starts to get really cold, but so far I'm a big fan! Mine was £60 from Amazon.

Furries · 04/10/2022 23:59

SkirridHill · 04/10/2022 19:23

Any chance you could factor it in as a Christmas present? I knew I wanted one, so when my (small) family group asked for ideas for my birthday, I asked for money. I normally hate asking for money, but explained what it would go towards.

sjpkgp1 · 05/10/2022 00:19

Definitely the heated under-blanket. We have a superking and my OH likes the window open (in winter) and a cold bedroom, so I have a single electric blanket. As others have said, just 10 minutes at full pelt and you can get in, turn it off, and it is lovely toasty and you fall asleep almost instantly. I'm a bit paranoid about them being left on etc. but in ten years I have only once or twice turned them on in the middle of the night due to being awoken and cold, but again they have instantly done the trick. I think mine was fairly cheap, and it has 3 settings but I just whack it up to full setting, so half the the fancy features of a better one would not be used. Hot water bottles are OK but suspect you spend more boiling the kettle (and it is only hot for one part of the body)

RewildingAmbridge · 05/10/2022 00:29

I went back and forth on this, then finally did it. Dreamland super king dual control. It's amazing and very likely the reason we've not used our heating yet
