Electric blanket - worth it?

Wowzers12 · 01/10/2022 12:41

Saw on tv this morning that an electric blanket only costs 5p an hour which saves on heating.

Does anyone use one and can recommend a good one? When using do you feel you can live without the heating on?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best electric blanket page with loads of great options you can buy now that are loved by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Smile

I am evangelical about my electric blanket. I have a dreamland and I've just bought my children slipway night ones.
We tend to not hang out in our bedrooms if an evening so only go in to go to bed. The blanket means you can get into a warm bed in a cold room.

I don't understand heated throws. They blow my mind

Ragruggers · 01/10/2022 12:50

Perfect we have the overblanket prefer this to underone.Always have a warm bed to get into,Double with separate dials so you can choose the heat you want.Bought from John Lewis last year. The heated throws for the sofa are brilliant .Lakeland.Best money we ever spent to keep warm.

Love mine 😍 I fall asleep immediately getting into a warm bed!

Neolara · 01/10/2022 13:00

I love my heated throw. Use it to get warm on sofa.

Babyitstimetomoveon · 01/10/2022 13:00

I have an aldi one, it's fab.

Hdocheub820 · 01/10/2022 13:01

It's the best feeling putting the electric blanket on an hour before bed and then climbing into a warm bed if you're cold. Do it!

cookiecreammmpie · 01/10/2022 13:02

I've got an underblanket. Amazing getting into a warm bed when you're cold.

SirenSays · 01/10/2022 13:02

Love mine. I'm not sure I'd survive winter without it.

clowerina · 01/10/2022 13:03

yes, 100 times yes. combined with a knock off type oodie thing (we got the john lewis ones!) you don't need the heating on at all. And if you put in bed 10 mins before you get in it makes it so snuggly.

silentpool · 01/10/2022 13:03

I have an electric blanket for my bed - so nice getting into a warm bed. It's just a cheap one but my dream one would have a timer and work with Alexa.

I also have an electric throw blanket on the couch - so warm. I couldn't do without them.

Blueberrycreampie · 01/10/2022 13:04

We have a dual control Dreamland which is quilted and has a cotton outer. It's an under blanket and is the second one we've had over many years. I wouldn't be without it!

AliceMcK · 01/10/2022 13:05

I have an Aldi one, no idea on the cost of running it but I love it. I have chronic health issues including raynards phenomenon. I will suddenly get cold start shivering, teeth chattering and my lips will turn blue I’ve found crawling into bed and putting the blanket on is the best and fastest way for me to get through this.

Igmum · 01/10/2022 13:08

We have just got the Dreamland ones. They are sooooooo toasty. I love them ❤️❤️

Butterfly44 · 01/10/2022 13:09

100%!!!!
I have one in the bed with a timer. I honestly only need it for the first hour to warm up. Also a heated throw to use when sitting in the living room etc - no yet out on heating and it's warmer and economical to a hot water bottle.

Ciderandskatesdontmix · 01/10/2022 13:10

@silentpool I've got mine connected to a smart plug so I can be super lazy and switch it on with alexa or my phone before bed time...total game changer!

Mrswalliams1 · 01/10/2022 13:11

I can't survive without my electric blanket. The kids have one and I even got our elderly dog one! Much cheaper than turning the heating on

lemmein · 01/10/2022 13:14

There's some household items that if they break you'd have to instantly replace because they're vital to your happiness- electric blankets/throws are top of that list!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/10/2022 13:15

They are amazing. And most cost less than 5p an hour to run too.

Wowzers12 · 01/10/2022 13:20

Blimey, a resounding YES then! Thanks everyone!

Main concern for me is over winter during the day as am on maternity leave so me and LO will be spending more time than usual indoors and i want to avoid putting the heating on constantly.

Didn't know electric throws were a thing, gonna check them out right now

Goodness, my Mum has Raynauds too and lives in a bungalow that's freezing everywhere except the kitchen.

Lightbulb christmas present idea moment. Thank you.

I've read on here that the heated throws have a tendency to go "pop", and once they're broken that's it. It's the only reason I haven't invested in one! I do have an electric blanket for DDs bed and she absolutely loves it.

NowYouListenToMeFella · 04/10/2022 12:59

Hoping for a recommendation. Have never had an electric blanket before but am considering buying one. Looking at under blankets and finding it hard to pick. Would like one that is comfy, washable and has a variety of heating settings. Any help gratefully appreciated.

JammyThing · 04/10/2022 13:04

Stupid question no doubt, but where is the plug bit on the actual blanket supposed to go so it's not uncomfortable? Not the switch/control, but where it meets the blanket. Under the pillow?
