Death certificate cause of death

asblindasabat · 29/09/2022 14:24

My question is based on the fact the Queen’s death certificate has been released and it says the cause of death was “old age”

Obviously, that is true but I didn’t think an official record of a person’s death would record the cause using such a basic term?

I thought it would have to be the actual scientific/medical cause of death?

Just curious!

I'd get old age if she died in her sleep but she was under medical supervision so something must have happened to cause her death ??

diddl · 29/09/2022 15:05

I thought that it was usually "frailty of old age" now?

I found the time of death more interesting.

Slushynana · 29/09/2022 15:05

When my mum died 2 years ago at the age of 94, the doctor asked if we were happy for her to use that on the death certificate. It was either that or a post Mortem to ascertain the cause of death. We chose to have old age on the certificate.

LosingTheWill2022 · 29/09/2022 15:05

My father died aged 92 and cause of death given was simply "old age". 2019.

Her hear stopped beating. It's as simple as that.

LosingTheWill2022 · 29/09/2022 15:07

Heart obviously

Sandysandwich · 29/09/2022 15:08

They might not know exactly what it was, other than she was very old and her body gave out. Its unlikely they were going to do a post mortem just to see exactly what was the cause, its not a suspicious death.

catsonahottinroof · 29/09/2022 15:08

I've just seen the death certificate and though the same as you OP - that there are usually more contributing causes listed, and more scientific detail given. I think the death certificate was published to stop the conspiracy theories, but agree that the public shouldn't have any right to know the exact cause of death.

She was the Queen, she was ailing and so had private doctors and medical staff keeping an eye on her. If she had been anyone else of that age she would probably have had a quick visit to make sure she wasn't actually I'll and then family been told to just keep her comfortable. Also, as the Palace always minimise everything to do with the monarch's health so as not to worry people, saying she was under medical supervision was the closest to saying 'this is serious and she probably won't make it'

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 29/09/2022 15:08

yes they simply breathe and then don't breathe again then there is no pulse

Don't be daft, elderly people just slip away, they go in and out of sleep, consciousness whatever you want to call it. If our bodies didn't just eventually give up don't you think we'd be seeing loads of 300 year olds wandering about because nothing had actually happened?

SoupDragon · 29/09/2022 15:10

I read today that, had she died in England, there would not necessarily have been any cause of death as Monarchs are exempt.

imagine the uproar and conspiracy theories!

igiveup777 · 29/09/2022 15:10

My mum had Frailty of Old Age for the second cause.

Old people die of old age.
Why start conspiracy theories. It's nuts.

BeetBeats · 29/09/2022 15:12

She didn’t have a post mortem examination so this would be a fairly standard thing to put. If she had a PM it would be something more specific (heart failure etc) but there’s no way of telling without one. She wouldn’t have a PM if she’d seen a doctor in the last two weeks before her death and the doctor was certain it wasn’t anything other than an old age related cause.

BEAM123 · 29/09/2022 15:12

I'm glad people are allowed to die of old age and not have to have a post mortem to find out the exact reason. I thought any time someone died without having seen a doctor on the last 48 hours, they had to have a pm. Seems from previous posts that's not the case over 80.

It seems so invasive, do we actually have to do that to a loved one's body just so we can always have a precise cause of death?

It’s not a conspiracy theory. You can’t die of old age any more than you can die of young age.

girlmom21 · 29/09/2022 15:14

I'd rather my deceased relatives deaths get recorded as old age than them have a post mortem.

Tort · 29/09/2022 15:14

I need to go back over that thread where people’s important DHs were told about the death early. I’m sure some were claiming well before 3pm

obsessedwithsleep · 29/09/2022 15:14

Old age was use for my grandfather a few years ago. It's just rare because normally there is something more specific wrong with the person.

Claricethecat45 · 29/09/2022 15:15

I still recall hospital doctors used to record 'Grand Old Age' as cause on death certificates and thought it had since been prohibited....glad it hasn't.

Some people are liars and will do anything to feel important.

lollipoprainbow · 29/09/2022 15:20

@Celticandco you've totally missed my point but thanks for your patronising response.

Fernleigh22 · 29/09/2022 15:20

Lots of certificates say Old Age!! The rule is they have to be over the age of 80, which she most definitely was

HappyHamsters · 29/09/2022 15:21

Publishing the time of death will now just start the who was/wasnt there, why weren't they there nonsense.
