90's exercise - what was your favourite?

I'm ancient now but fondly remember the popularity of aerobics in the 90s. Step really took off then and 'popmobility' - a really high impact class that took you to another level. BLT classes which were mostly spent on the mat.

These evolved to the Les Mills classes of the 00's and HIIT - I really miss the old skool aerobics classes though 😅

(I pressed flowers by mistake)

No idea! I vaguely remember 'ladies' lying on them and they moved up and down.

I've been to a Les Mills step class tonight actually!

About 9 years & 3 stone since my last one - it nearly killed me!

Another Callanetics fan who has moved on to Pilates.

I had a Jane Fonda video and book in about 1990. I was in the US then, there were also a couple of exercise programs on a tv channel I used to quite often do at lunchtime - one was for some mysterious reason a woman with a crew of blokes in nautical style gear doing the exercises in front of a navy warship. No idea what it was called.

Afonavon · 29/09/2022 01:31

I loved The Y Plan, and The Y Plan Pregnancy.

I didn’t enjoy the Cindy Crawford VHS, as it was really difficult.

I likes Step classes.

Mainly, bog standard aerobics were my favourite, grapevine, upward row all in lycra.

Nowadays I think that Zumba is the only enjoyable excersice.

Myshitisreal · 29/09/2022 02:25

Cher fitness step videos, only we couldn't afford Step so I used a yellow pages. It did not work well 🫣

mackthepony · 29/09/2022 02:36

I'm sorry but how could those toning tables have ever have worked? It just moved your leg up and down?

Mr. Motivator anyone?

Ugh to grapevine! 😂

cafenoirbiscuit · 29/09/2022 02:58

Flatmates and I loved Callanetics when we were students. It was the only sport we could smoke in the middle of 😳🤣

Amdone123 · 29/09/2022 04:20

Does anyone remember Mad Lizzie from TV am? I used to exercise in my living room to one of her videos. Like pps, I remember getting good results.
You're right, @PollyCreo , exercise was much more fun then.
The 'grapevine ' instantly revived memories of Victoria Wood's brilliant creation, Hailey Bailey. Say no more !

stilldumdedumming · 29/09/2022 04:48

I still remember the words to the motivational songs of the video I used to do after school as a teen. Bloody loved aerobics

Buckland123 · 29/09/2022 06:29

I teach fitness classes - teaching aerobics is so hard, it’s really exhausting trying to think of all the choreography too, it’s quite complicated. I qualified over 20 years ago and it’s definitely gone away from aerobics/step (though I do still teach step occasionally) and mostly Les Mills, Pilates, yoga & spin now. Shame there’s a lot less variation but on the other hand I think classes are generally better - I went to some really bad ones in the 90s!
funny industry to work in - a lot has changed - I used to use tapes 😁

SplashingMermaidSparkleTail · 29/09/2022 06:39

Zumba!

Violashift · 29/09/2022 06:47

I used to love the Bev Callard videos and the Taebo billy Blank or khai bo punchy work outs.

Not hears of popmobility up here.

jay55 · 29/09/2022 06:50

I had the Cher one with resistance bands.
She had some cracking outfits.

TheUntiedShoelace · 29/09/2022 06:51

Zumba is still fun. We even grapevine now and again in our class.

notprincehamlet · 29/09/2022 06:53

O yes the Y Plan - don't lock the knees!

ClinkeyMonkey · 29/09/2022 06:57

All these workout videos has reminded me how much exercise I used to do and what a lazy cow I am now😅 I loved step aerobics and did a class every week at the leisure centre and videos at home. It appealed to my sense of liking my own little space! I had Power to Step 1 and 2 which was all Stock, Aitken and Waterman music, which I wouldn't have been seen dead listening to in normal circumstances, but was great to exercise/dance to. I also had the Cher video and the original Reebok video.

Other non step videos I loved were the celebrity ones - Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford etc. And I did the Callanetics one too. Oh and those stretchy band things - were they 1990s? - I did those too (with and without video). I also had a few books - Karen Voight was good.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 29/09/2022 07:00

Love a bit of Zumba. If exercise isn’t fun, I’m not interested.

A lot of exercise has become too serious and a bit ‘worthy’ these days… but whatever floats your boat.

I come over slightly strange if I ever hear ‘Can you feel it?’ by the Jacksons as that was one of the songs Jane Fonda used. I start twitching 🤣

My knees do give me problems, though, and I’m sure it was because of the step classes I used to do 2-3 times a week in my 20s.

onemouseplace · 29/09/2022 07:06

Loved Step - it was an option for us during 6th Form PE sessions and it was a massive revelation to me that I actually enjoyed a form of exercise after years of hideous school PE sport lessons.

I also had the Callanetics book, but never completed a full workout as it took forever - I remember it being 100s of reps of every thing.

FatMog · 29/09/2022 00:17

(I pressed flowers by mistake)

@FatMog ypu pressed flowers for exercise? Now that’s a form of exercise I could get on board with!😄

Porridgeaddiction · 29/09/2022 22:19

I had all of the Mr motivator videos!

I'm so cool 😎 haha

maddy68 · 29/09/2022 22:29

Callenetics ...had the video with the dutchess of York!

Popmobility was an activity we could choose in PE

WeDoNotTalktoPennilynLott · 29/09/2022 22:30

Another Jane Fonda fan

MrsAppleHead · 29/09/2022 22:31

Mr Motivator!!

OhMerde · 29/09/2022 22:35

Franticbutterfly · 28/09/2022 23:47

The Cindy Crawford Video where she swings her legs back and forth. I loved doing that!

I still do that if I'm stood standing for a few seconds, including at the petrol pump!

Even before the Cindy Crawford vid, I used to listen to a post-workout relaxation tape narrated by Felicity Kendall. I loved it. She'd talk you through every bit of your body from yours toes upwards, telling you to tighten and then release each part. I must have been about 10 doing that!!
