Question from a non-driver: What's a good place to wait for a taxi/Uber/lift in general?

Apologies for the stupid question but as a non-driver I'm really not sure! If you're waiting for a taxi/Uber etc., what's a good place for a driver to stop? I assume a main road may not be as easy as a quieter side road? Should I stand on the side of the road the car will remain after picking me up, or if the driver is coming from the opposite direction, should I wait on their side of the road (as it were)?

I need to get a taxi quite late in the evening on Friday and would prefer to wait somewhere that's safe but still convenient for the driver, too. I'll be in a town centre but probably not lots of traffic at that time.

Priority is your safety. Stay where you can be safe (even better if it has cameras) and ideally have a sight line of the taxi arriving. Personally, I use a taxi company that text me the car make, and registration and driver name, so I can see if it’s the right taxi before I leave the safe place. If local taxis are like others - they don’t worry about where they stop to collect you, main road, side street etc.
I also let someone trusted know the taxi company I’m using and if possible that I've arrived safely.
