Does the below question make sense to any of you?

Who wants to be a millionaire question

Yes. What are you confused about?

losenotloose · 24/09/2022 23:43

The first part of the question seems irrelevant! Which letter starts the common English name....

No, I didn't understand what they were asking at all! Neither did my husband, so you're not alone! I only realised once she started naming the countries Grin

Whataretheodds · 24/09/2022 23:45

Yes makes sense to me

PuttingDownRoots · 24/09/2022 23:46

Because some countries have different name in different countries

Germany-Deutschland
Spain Espana
For example

LokiCokey · 24/09/2022 23:46

I get it but only after reading it a few times!

FrankTheThunderbird · 24/09/2022 23:46

Not the foggiest. I thought it was asking for a number, but a PP said its a country.

DelurkingAJ · 24/09/2022 23:46

Just means the name in English rather than the native language, yes? So Greece not Hellas (bad transliteration there but you get the idea).

ReviewingTheSituation · 24/09/2022 23:46

Question makes sense, but what was the answer?
L maybe, if Lithuania and Latvia are in the EU? Along with Luxembourg and maybe Liechtenstein.

Antarcticant · 24/09/2022 23:47

My guess would be L.

Ladyof2022 · 24/09/2022 23:47

It should be "largest" number not highest.

ReviewingTheSituation · 24/09/2022 23:48

Oooh - or maybe S... Sweden, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain... But are they all EU...??

Namechanger355 · 24/09/2022 23:49

Well it’s because it’s asking about country names in English rather than another language eg Spain rather than Espagna (Spanish) or Espagne (French) eg

or Germany rather than Alemania (Spanish)

question itself makes perfect sense to me - although it’s hard as requires you to be able to know all eU countries to guess

CatherinedeBourgh · 24/09/2022 23:49

If you listed all the EU countries in english (i.e. Spain, Greece, Germany, Ireland, etc.) what would be the most common initial?

ShyPussyCat · 24/09/2022 23:49

Ladyof2022 · 24/09/2022 23:47

It should be "largest" number not highest.

Or 'the most EU states' would perhaps be clearer.

Talipesmum · 24/09/2022 23:50

I couldn’t work it out - I thought it was asking “what letter is at the beginning of a number” that most eu states have. And that question doesn’t make any sense.

It would have been clearer to ask “what is the most common starting letter of names of EU states, when written in English?”

Mouseaboutthehouse · 24/09/2022 23:50

I really can't see how anyone could be confused by this. The answer is S

losenotloose · 24/09/2022 23:50

Well I'm glad I asked, makes sense now! Still think it's badly worded. It was D

I only understood the question when you said the first bit was superfluous. I guess it’s because countries are known by different names in other languages so this clarification is needed as others have said.

Talipesmum · 24/09/2022 23:52

ShyPussyCat · 24/09/2022 23:49

Yes - agree.

What’s confusing about that though? We start Hermany with a G, it starts with a D in German. The English name for España is Spain and so on.

SunshineDesserts · 24/09/2022 23:54

It was badly worded.

cardboardbox24 · 24/09/2022 23:54

I literally don't understand it at all, even after reading it 5 times 😂

Surely S starts Spain and E starts Espana, so they were saying they wanted the English spelling

Mouseaboutthehouse · 24/09/2022 23:55

What is it people aren't understanding?
