Well I'm glad I asked, makes sense now! Still think it's badly worded. It was D

How can it be D? Only Denmark starts with D. Must be S, surely...

Mumoftwoinprimary · 25/09/2022 07:21

It is S:-

The EU countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Probably answer option D, which was the letter S.

WeAreTheHeroes · 25/09/2022 07:28

Ah - thanks for that. I found that more confusing than the question! 😂

Probably answer option D, which was the letter S.

Ah yes, of course!

Mommabear20 · 25/09/2022 07:38

How is that confusing?
They're asking which letter states the most countries names, when only considering the English version of the name 🤷‍♀️

BigSandyBalls2015 · 25/09/2022 07:42

I had to read the question several times last night …. but I was a bit pissed. They could have worded it better.

waterlego · 25/09/2022 07:46

I had to read that three times before I understood. I think they could’ve worded it better.

Moltenpink · 25/09/2022 07:48

Awful wording, didn’t understand what they were asking at all. “Highest” isn’t the right term in that context

CosmopolitanPlease · 25/09/2022 07:51

Very confusingly worded.

MissBattleaxe · 25/09/2022 07:54

I had to read it 3 times and I still didn't get it. Don't they have someone to proof read? It sound like they're asking two questions not one.

WimbyAce · 25/09/2022 08:19

Strange wording but yes I understand it.

LaughingPriest · 25/09/2022 08:28

To me it looks like they are asking for a number e.g. E for eleven EU states. (Should be T for twenty seven but the question as written is nonsensical).

Which letter is the most common first letter of EU states (when their names are written in English)?
would have been clearer.

Smidge001 · 25/09/2022 08:30

The word 'common' is really confusing, as is 'highest'. Really poorly worded question.

Brunonono · 25/09/2022 08:34

I was also confused watching it last night and didn't work out what the question was until she started listing countries. I thought it was asking for the starting letter from the name of some subgroup of EU countries but wasn't aware of one which is why I couldn't understand! Definitely could have been worded better.

EvilRingahBitch · 25/09/2022 08:35

Could be more clearly worded, but when you look at the options given as answers it's obvious.

saveforthat · 25/09/2022 08:39

ReviewingTheSituation · 25/09/2022 07:30

Ah yes, of course!

This is hilarious. How many more misunderstandings can we enjoy in this thread.

JenniferBarkley · 25/09/2022 08:41

Talipesmum · 24/09/2022 23:50

I couldn’t work it out - I thought it was asking “what letter is at the beginning of a number” that most eu states have. And that question doesn’t make any sense.

It would have been clearer to ask “what is the most common starting letter of names of EU states, when written in English?”

This is much clearer. I was parsing the sentence differently, and thinking that the highest number of EU states just have been just before Brexit, and that was twenty something, but T isn't an option... And then wondering if each country is numbered on entry and so which is the latest country to join...

It's early and I've only started my coffee, but still think it's a shit question!

CequeJaroayJeka · 25/09/2022 08:43

I don't think that the question is confusing at all

The answer choices are 4 specific letters of the alphabet so the question has to be "whar letter of the alphabet..." and some countries have a different first letter for the name of the country in the language spoken there so you need "common English"

Very clear question. Obvious answer.

JaninaDuszejko · 25/09/2022 08:51

Very badly worded and formatted question. I thought they must be looking for a collective noun 'common english name' like federation or community.

JustDanceAddict · 25/09/2022 08:53

Definitely badly worded, but I understood it.

ARoyalSubject · 25/09/2022 08:57

Part of my job is writing / editing publications which need to be in very clear, easy to understand English.

I would not have understood that question, at first glance.

I would rewrite it as:

"Thinking about their names in English, which initial letter starts the largest number of EU member states?"

Is that any clearer?
